The Use of Hades in the New Testament

The word hades (sheol) presents a problem--a matter on which the theologians or our own Synod are not agreed. Many of them believe that the word has various meanings--that in certain passages it means hell, while in other passages it has a general meaning, namely, the state of death”. There are also those who are of the conviction that the term is never used to designate hell, the place of eternal punishment, but only means the state or condition of death . It is the latter view which, after careful study of the problem, I consider to be the more correct view and which I shall endeavor to expound in this treatise. However, since neither view is contrary to the analogia fidei, I do not wish to be dogmatic in this matter. I am satisfied that my own investigation of the problem has led me to believe that the latter view is the more correct one
