    An RF-Driven Josephson Bifurcation Amplifier for Quantum Measurements

    We have constructed a new type of amplifier whose primary purpose is the readout of superconducting quantum bits. It is based on the transition of an RF-driven Josephson junction between two distinct oscillation states near a dynamical bifurcation point. The main advantages of this new amplifier are speed, high-sensitivity, low back-action, and the absence of on-chip dissipation. Pulsed microwave reflection measurements on nanofabricated Al junctions show that actual devices attain the performance predicted by theory.Comment: 5 Figure

    High-Precision U-Pb CA-TIMS Calibration of Middle Permian to Lower Triassic Sequences, Mass Extinction and Extreme Climate-Change in Eastern Australian Gondwana

    Twenty-eight new high-precision Chemical Abrasion Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry U-Pb zircon dates for tuffs in the Sydney and Bowen Basins are reported. Based on these new dates, the Guadalupian-Lopingian/Capitanian-Wuchiapingian boundary is tentatively placed at the level of the Thirroul Sandstone in the lower part of the Illawarra Coal Measures in the Sydney Basin. The Wuchiapingian-Changhsingian boundary is at or close to the Kembla Sandstone horizon in the Illawarra Coal Measures, southern Sydney Basin, in the middle part of the Newcastle Coal Measures in the northern Sydney Basin, and in the middle of the Black Alley Shale in the southern Bowen Basin. The end-Permian mass extinction is recognised at the base of the Coal Cliff Sandstone in the southern Sydney Basin, at the top of the Newcastle Coal Measures in the northern Sydney Basin, and close to the base of the Rewan Group in the Bowen Basin and is dated at c. 252.2 Ma. The end-Permian mass extinction is interpreted to be synchronous globally in both marine and terrestrial environments, and in high and low latitudes (resolution \u3c 0.5 my). The GSSP-defined Permian-Triassic boundary is interpreted to be approximately at the level of the Scarborough Sandstone in the lower Narrabeen Group, Sydney Basin, and in the lower Rewan Group, Bowen Basin. New dates presented here suggest that the P3 and P4 glacial episodes in the Permian of eastern Australia are early Roadian to early Capitanian, and late Capitanian to mid Wuchiapingian in age respectively. The greenhouse crisis in the uppermost Pebbly Beach and Rowan Formations of the Sydney Basin is interpreted as early mid Roadian, a mid-Capitanian age for the crisis at the base of the Illawarra/Whittingham Coal Measures is confirmed. Greenhouse crises in the upper Illawarra/Newcastle Coal Measures and lower Narrabeen Group of the Sydney Basin are dated as upper Changhsingian-Induan, and in the upper Narrabeen Group/lower Hawksbury Sandstone as upper Olenekian

    RF bifurcation of a Josephson junction: microwave embedding circuit requirements

    A Josephson tunnel junction which is RF-driven near a dynamical bifurcation point can amplify quantum signals. The bifurcation point will exist robustly only if the electrodynamic environment of the junction meets certain criteria. In this article we develop a general formalism for dealing with the non-linear dynamics of Josephson junction embedded in an arbitrary microwave circuit. We find sufficient conditions for the existence of the bifurcation regime: a) the embedding impedance of the junction need to present a resonance at a particular frequency ωR\omega_{R}, with the quality factor QQ of the resonance and the participation ratio pp of the junction satisfying Qp≫1Qp\gg 1, b) the drive frequency should be low frequency detuned away from ωR\omega_{R} by more than 3ωR/(2Q)\sqrt{3}\omega_{R}/(2Q).Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Galaxy number counts- IV. surveying the Herschel deep field in the near-infrared

    (abridged) We present results from two new near-infrared imaging surveys. One covers 47.2 arcmin^2 to K(3\sigma)<20 whilst a second, deeper survey covers a sub-area of 1.8 arcmin^2 to K(3\sigma)<22.75. Over the entire area we have extremely deep UBRI photometry. Our K- counts are consistent with the predictions of non-evolving models with 0 < q0 <0.5. The K-selected (B-K) galaxy colour distributions move sharply bluewards fainter than K~20 and at at brighter magnitudes (K<20) our observed colour distributions indicate a deficiency of red, early-type galaxies at z~1 in comparison with passively evolving models. This implies either a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model with a low level of continuing star-formation following an an initial burst, or dynamical merging. At fainter magnitudes, the continuing bluewards trend observed in (B-K) can be explained purely in terms of passively evolving PLE models. Our observed numbers of (I-K)>4 galaxies at K<20 exhibit the same deficiency, suggesting that at least part of the larger deficit observed in (B-K) at K<20 may be due to star-formation rather than dynamical merging. Finally, as we and others have noted, the number-redshift distribution at 18<K<19 of recent, deep K- selected redshift surveys is well fitted by non-evolving models; passively evolving models with a Salpeter or Scalo initial mass functions overpredict the numbers of galaxies with z>1. Dynamical merging is one possible solution to reduce the numbers of these galaxies but a dwarf-dominated IMF for early-type galaxies could offer an alternative explanation; we show that this model reproduces both the optical-infrared colour distributions and the K- band galaxy counts.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, revised version, requires astrobib.sty, mn-abs.sty, submitted to MNRA

    Calls for Police Service: Understanding the demand profile and the UK police response

    Purpose – The purpose of this research paper is to identify and understand the demand profile of a division of Lancashire Police Constabulary in order to assist Police administrators in the evaluation of demand and understanding of Policing response. Design/methodology/approach – Police data records regarding all offences within the Central Division of Lancashire Police Constabulary over the year of 2013 were examined. Descriptive statistics were used to identify the top ten demand addresses in five categories (residential, statutory bodies, retail, nightlife, and young people’s services), and the incident classifications, time frames and response codes that were most associated with these addresses. Further content analysis was conducted on the top ten residential addresses in order to identify specific characteristics of residential demand. Findings - The majority of Lancashire Constabulary resources are being spent dealing with non-traditional police demand. The most demanding residents were found to have one or more of the following properties; (i) to be of white – Northern European origin, (ii) to be unemployed, (iii) to be associated with mental health issues, domestic violence incidents or substance abuse, and (iv) to have previously had other agency involvement. Practical Implications - These results indicate that the police could potentially reduce the demand for service by enhancing work within two key areas; partnership working and early intervention. Originality/value – In this time of austerity and police budget cuts, it is important to understand the demand on the UK police service in an attempt to reduce it

    Measuring the Decoherence of a Quantronium Qubit with the Cavity Bifurcation Amplifier

    Dispersive readouts for superconducting qubits have the advantage of speed and minimal invasiveness. We have developed such an amplifier, the Cavity Bifurcation Amplifier (CBA) [10], and applied it to the readout of the quantronium qubit [2]. It consists of a Josephson junction embedded in a microwave on-chip resonator. In contrast with the Josephson bifurcation amplifier [17], which has an on-chip capacitor shunting a junction, the resonator is based on a simple coplanar waveguide imposing a pre-determined frequency and whose other RF characteristics like the quality factor are easily controlled and optimized. Under proper microwave irradiation conditions, the CBA has two metastable states. Which state is adopted by the CBA depends on the state of a quantronium qubit coupled to the CBA's junction. Due to the MHz repetition rate and large signal to noise ratio we can show directly that the coherence is limited by 1/f gate charge noise when biased at the sweet spot - a point insensitive to first order gate charge fluctuations. This architecture lends itself to scalable quantum computing using a multi-resonator chip with multiplexed readouts.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures To be published in Physical Review
