Quorum Sensing is a gastrosonic experience for three guests. A soup is served in a glass tableware (Emotional Tableware) designed as a result from a research project on associations of shapes and materials with musical emotions. The actions of each diner produce vibrations applied to the body of the others. The conceptual framework of Quorum Sensing and Emotional Tableware is multiple: relating human experience with that of other species, tactilely increasing the sense of presence in commensality, a multisensory and crossmodal approach to object design and a reflection on the use of cell phones and tablets at the table. In the future, the experience may function as an experimental device to investigate these aspects as well as the impact of vibrations on the perception of food.Quorum Sensing es una experiencia gastrosónica para tres comensales. Marble melancholy: using crossmodal correspondences of shapes, materials, and music to predict music-induced emotions

Introduction: Music is known to elicit strong emotions in listeners, and, if primed appropriately, can give rise to specific and observable crossmodal correspondences. This study aimed to assess two primary objectives: (1) identifying crossmodal correspondences emerging from music-induced emotions, and (2) examining the predictability of music-induced emotions based on the association of music with visual shapes and materials. Methods: To achieve this, 176 participants were asked to associate visual shapes and materials with the emotion classes of the Geneva Music-Induced Affect Checklist scale (GEMIAC) elicited by a set of musical excerpts in an online experiment. Results: Our findings reveal that music-induced emotions and their underlying core affect (i.e., valence and arousal) can be accurately predicted by the joint information of musical excerpt and features of visual shapes and materials associated with these music-induced emotions. Interestingly, valence and arousal induced by music have higher predictability than discrete GEMIAC emotions. Discussion: These results demonstrate the relevance of crossmodal correspondences in studying music-induced emotions. The potential applications of these findings in the fields of sensory interactions design, multisensory experiences and art, as well as digital and sensory marketing are briefly discussed.Peer Reviewe

Aesthetic emotions in a mixed reality multisensory experience with food crossmodally matched to music and visuals

    No full text
International audienceWe examine the emergence of aesthetic emotions in a mixed reality (MR) multisensory eating experience. Participants in an art-science event completed the AESTHEMOS questionnaire on aesthetic emotions and the Multimodal Presence Scale, reporting a wide spectrum of prototypical, pleasant and epistemic emotions. Food enjoyment was correlated with the prototypical aesthetic emotions of fascination and enchantment and feelings of self-presence were correlated with the prototypical emotions of being moved/in awe. Crossmodally matched food was highly congruent with music and visuals. Our findings indicate the relevance of studying environmental aesthetics in the context of these novel eating situations

Principal pitch of frequency-modulated tones with asymmetrical modulation waveform: A comparison of models

    No full text
In this work, the overall perceived pitch (principal pitch) of pure tones modulated in frequency with an asymmetric waveform is studied. The dependence of the principal pitch on the degree of asymmetric modulation was obtained from a psychophysical experiment. The modulation waveform consisted of a flat portion of constant frequency and two linear segments forming a peak. Consistent with previous results, significant pitch shifts with respect to the time-averaged geometric mean were observed. The direction of the shifts was always toward the flat portion of the modulation. The results from the psychophysical experiment, along with those obtained from previously reported studies, were compared with the predictions of six models of pitch perception proposed in the literature. Even though no single model was able to predict accurately the perceived pitch for all experiments, there were two models that give robust predictions that are within the range of acceptable tuning of modulated tones for almost all the cases. Both models point to the existence of an underlying “stability sensitive” mechanism for the computation of pitch that gives more weight to the portion of the stimuli where the frequency is changing more slowly.Fil: Etchemendy, Pablo Esteban.
