    Professional portfolios : creating a framework for teacher accountability portfolios

    Educators are being held accountable for their actions in the classroom by their states and local districts. In Iowa teachers are required to demonstrate competency for eight different standards that include 42 criteria. One form of meeting this requirement is by creating a professional portfolio. A problem that many educators face is the lack of direction provided to create this portfolio. The purpose of this project was to design a framework for creating a professional portfolio. Instruction on this framework will be provided through seven professional development sessions targeted for novice teachers. At the completion of the professional development sessions participants will have a finished professional portfolio that meets accountability mandates by the state of Iowa

    In this paper, we focus on a general class of Schr\"odinger equations that are time-dependent and quadratic in X and P. We transform Schr\"odinger equations in this class, via a class of time-dependent mass equations, to a class of solvable time-dependent oscillator equations. This transformation consists of a unitary transformation and a change in the ``time'' variable.     Long-term proton pump inhibitor use and effect on risk of fractures

    Objective: To conduct an analysis of literature that examined the effects of long-term proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in adults 50 years and older on fracture risk. Methods: A literature search of the PubMed database using the terms “long-term use of PPIs” AND “fractures” Results: All 3 studies reported a statistically significant increased risk of fracture associated with long-term use of PPIs in both men and women over 50. None of the studies showed an increased risk of fracture with short-term PPI use. Conclusions: Health care providers should be informing their patients of the potential risk associated with long-term PPI use. While there was no increased risk associated with short-term use of PPIs, providers should be sure to only prescribe the medications when they are heavily indicated, especially if they are to be used long-term. We would also recommend that patients who will be on these mediations long-term be assessed for fall risk and have that taken into consideration as well

    Polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor beta gene in systemic lupus erythematosus

    We investigated the Nco I restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the tumor necrosis factor beta (TNFB) gene in 173 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 192 unrelated healthy controls, and eleven panel families, all of German origin. The phenotype frequency of the TNFB*I allele was significantly increased in patients compared to controls (63.6% vs 47.1%, RR = 1.96, p <0.002). The results of a two-point haplotype statistical analysis between TNFB and HLA alleles show that there is linkage disequilibrium between TNFB*I and HLA-A1, Cw7, B8, DR3, DQ2, and C4A DE. The frequency of TNFB*I was compared in SLE patients and controls in the presence or absence of each of these alleles. TNFB*I is increased in patients over controls only in the presence of the mentioned alleles. Therefore, the whole haplotypeA1, Cw7, B8, TNFB* I, C4A DE, DR3, DQ2 is increased in patients and it cannot be determined which of the genes carried by this haplotype is responsible for the susceptibility to SLE. In addition, two-locus associations were analyzed in 192 unrelated healthy controls for TNFB and class I alleles typed by serology, and for TNFB and class II alleles typed by polymerase chain reaction/oligonucleotide probes. We found positive linkage disequilibrium between TNFB*I and the following alleles: HLA-A24, HLA-B8, DRBI*0301, DRBI*ll04, DRBI*1302, DQAI*0501, DQBI*0201, DQBI*0604, and DPBI*OIO1. TNFB*2 is associated with HLA-B7, DRBI*1501, and DQB I *0602

    HLA-G: expression in human keratinocytes in vitro and in human skin in vivo

    Classical, polymorphic major histocompatibility complex class I molecules are expressed on most nucleated cells.They present peptides at the cell surface and, thus, enable the immune system to scan peptides for their antigenicity. The function of the other, nonclassical class I molecules in man is controversial. HLA-G which has been shown by transfection experiments to be expressed at the cell surface, is only transcribed in placental tissue and in the fetal eye.Therefore, a role of HLA-G in the control of rejection of the allogeneic fetus has been discussed. We found that HLA-G expression is induced in keratinocytes by culture in vitro. Three different alternative splicing products of HLA-G can be detected: a full length transcript, an mRNA lacking exon 3 and a transcript devoid of exon 3 and 4. Reverse transcription followed by polymerase chain reaction also revealed the presence of HLA-G mRNA in vivo in biopsies of either diseased or healthy skin

    A multiscale wavelet algorithm for atom tracking in STM movies

    High-speed scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data have become available that provide movies of time-dependent surface processes. To track adsorbed atoms and molecules in such data automatic routines are required. We introduce a multiresolution wavelet particle detection algorithm for this purpose. To identify the particles, the images are decomposed by means of a discrete wavelet transform into wavelet planes of different resolutions. An 'à trous' low-pass filter is applied. The coefficients from the wavelet planes are filtered to remove noise. Wavelet planes with significant coefficients from the particles are multiplied, and the product is transformed into a binary particle mask. The precision of the method is tested with data sets of adsorbed CO molecules and O atoms on a Ru(0001) surface. The algorithm can safely detect and localize these particles with high precision, even in the presence of the enhanced noise characteristic for high-speed, constant-height STM data. By linking the particle positions, we obtain extended trajectories with a resolution of ∼0.5 Å or better allowing us to investigate the detailed motion of single atoms on a surface

    Natural Salinity Removal Processes in Reservoirs

    A small but significant amount of salinity removal has been reported by various authors to occur in mainstem Colorado River reservoirs. Recalculation of some of these salinity budgets, together with a review of the data bases used, usggests taht removal has not often been conclusively demonstrated. Laboratory microcosm experiments and field data indicate that calcium carbonate precipitation, perhaps with some coprecipitation of magnesium carbonate, is the mechanism responsible for most of the salinity removal in Oneida Reservoir, Idaho. Coprecipitation processes (including ion exchange), coagulation, and bioassimilation do not appear to be important natural salinity removal mechanisms. Finally, loss of calcium, relative to monovalent cations, may decrease water quality for irrigation purposes through increasing the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), despite a pross decrease in the TDS. The potential role of various reservoir operation options in managing natural salinity removal processes and the value of such removal is discussed
