Femiliar: An Artistic Exploration of Feminism Through Comedy

This project seeks to examine feminism through the widely accessible means of comedic performance. I have written, created, and acted in a web series that I established for several reasons: namely, to diffuse information about the oppressions that female-identifying individuals face in their everyday life as well as in the larger scheme of existence, but also to attempt to create a community of intersectional communication and collaboration where women can go to express their grievances and inspirations as well as seek comfort for the issues that plague them by nature of their gender identification. The show, Femiliar, is a sketch comedy web series consisting of one-minute episodes, released weekly, that satirize problematic ideologies pervasive throughout modern society. I have been able to garner hundreds of views on the various videos I have released and hope to continue to inspire a change of thought in people who are not affected directly by these issues, and to foster a sense of hope for those who are. I have addressed common issues such as catcalling and pop culture’s portrayal of women, but also less-recognized problems like oppressive female clothing and the perceived ownership of women by their spouses and fathers

The Integral Field View of the Orion Nebula

This paper reviews the major advances achieved in the Orion Nebula through the use of integral field spectroscopy (IFS). Since the early work of Vasconcelos and collaborators in 2005, this technique has facilitated the investigation of global properties of the nebula and its morphology, providing new clues to better constrain its 3D structure. IFS has led to the discovery of shock-heated zones at the leading working surfaces of prominent Herbig-Haro objects as well as the first attempt to determine the chemical composition of Orion protoplanetary disks, also known as proplyds. The analysis of these morphologies using IFS has given us new insights into the abundance discrepancy problem, a long-standing and unresolved issue that casts doubt on the reliability of current methods used for the determination of metallicities in the universe from the analysis of H II regions. Results imply that high-density clumps and high-velocity flows may play an active role in the production of such discrepancies. Future investigations based on the large-scale IFS mosaic of Orion will be very valuable for exploring how the integrated effect of small-scale structures may have impact at larger scales in the framework of star-forming regions.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. Labour market, international trade, and unemployment in a less developed country

This paper constructs a trade general equilibrium model for a less developed country with three sectors. One is the informal and un-tradable sector characterized by flexible wages, while the other two sectors are tradable, export and import sectors. The model imposes a binding minimum wage over the unskilled labour and efficient wage distortions on the skilled labour. Comparative statics is driven to analyze the effects on the labour market as consequence of opening the economy, raising the minimum wage and the introduction of an augmenting productivity in the export sector.Trade reforms; Trade and labor markets interactions, Demand for labor.

Piecemeal Oligopoly, Exchange Rate Uncertainty, and Trade Policy

RESUMEN:Este artículo analiza el efecto sistemático de la volatilidad de la tasa de cambio, cuando un gobierno local debe evaluar políticas comerciales estratégicas lineales y cuadráticas. Este ejercicio se realiza para modelosde mercado Cournot y Bertran. El modelo prueba que tanto el esquema lineal como el cuadrático tienen el mismo efecto sobre el bienestar social de los paises, y que la volatilidad de la tasa de cambio doméstica lleva a los gobiernos a reducir los subsidios a las exportaciones o bajan los impuestos a las exportaciones, de acuerdo a la variable estratégica elegida por las firmas. La tasa de cambio extrangera tiene diferentes efectos dependiendo de si las firmas producen bajos rendimientos a escalas constantes o decrecientes.ABSTRACT:This paper examines the systematic effect of the exchange rate volatility, when a local government has to evaluate linear and quadratic strategic trade policies. The exercise is realized for both Cournot and Bertrand markets fashions. The model proves that the linear or quadratic scheme have the same effect on the countries´ social welfare, and that the volatility of the domestic exchange rate leads governments to reduce export subsidies or to cutexport taxes, according to the strategic variable chosen by firms. Polarization in social movements on Twitter

Online social networks have become a parallel universe of socialization from which interactive dynamics are generated until recently unknown. From this framework of online communication, different social movements have reached a greater boom and spread. On Twitter these social movements have as a characteristic feature a hashtag (#) that allows cross-cutting the conversation. Although it has become an instrument that makes it possible to agglutinate the conversation in a massive way, we are also emerging voices that warn of the growing manipulation around these forms of socialization. Social workers must pay attention and investigate these means of digital activism in order to understand and avoid these possible manipulations. In this communication we analyze in a longitudinal way different social movements on Twitter. To this end, social movements that have emerged during the last year about phenomena related to the empowerment of women (#metoo, #yositecreo, etc ...), cooperation against natural disasters (#mallorca) and social demands (# pensions). To identify leaderships, detect communities and measure social distances, social network analysis has been used as well as certain algorithms. For the analysis of the conversations, language analysis techniques have been used to optimize the combination of the most common words, giving rise to conversation patterns around certain force ideas. The results achieved show a high level of emotivity in the way of interacting and a significant pattern of polarization in conversations about these movements that is the seed of conflicts and radicalization. The key lies in the way we congregate and converse in networks around those with whom we share our perspectives and opinions about the world. This tendency towards homophily provokes a biased and monolithic vision of reality. In order to counteract these conflicts we must raise the level of self-awareness on the level of homophilia in the way we congregate and converse on online social networks and intervene to increase tolerance for diversity.Online social networks have become a parallel universe of socialization from which interactive dynamics are generated until recently unknown. Big social data to organize the mobilization of citizenship

The cities around the world are concentrating the social life around the world. Nowadays our manner of socialization is changing. The emergence of social networking sites, have enabled greater social connectivity, which in turn has allowed the distances between people to be reduced and interactive dynamics to be generated until recently unpublished. This social phenomenon generates large amounts of data, attracting the interest of researchers and academics and is called Big Social Data. Access to these massive amounts of data makes it possible to detect patterns of behavior that are not visible to the naked eye, simply because they can radiate unknown connections to the naked eye. In addition, it is a type of data that, being more or less accessible, in front of others, does not bother the citizens because they are captured without people feeling observed, granting a very important spontaneity in the collection of data. Despite the many expectations it generates, we must qualify that Big Data does not explain things by itself. The voices that warn that Big Data has a lack have been intensified: explain why, the reasons why users of services do what they do, the emotions, feelings and realities that determine their behaviors and attitudes. To cover this gap, Thick Data is needed, that is, the "dense description" of information as a method to analyze phenomena, cultures and relationships between people. In short, it is about understanding that Thick Data and Big Data are complementary tools that have to be used in a balanced way. In the present communication we will show different examples of research with Big Social Data made so far. In that sense, we have investigated the capacity of organization and mobilization that can help to face social emergencies as disasters and catastrophes.
