Determination of patiens attitudes on using patient rights based on their views regarding violence in health
Çalışmaya katılan hastaların yaş ortalaması61,52±11,19 yıl, % 58,8’i erkek, % 74,2’si
sorumluluklarına sahip çıkarak, saygı duymaları ile mümkün olacaktırThis study was designed as a descriptive and cross-sectionalstudy with the aim of
determining patients’ attitudes on using patient rights by gathering their opinions regarding
violence in health.
The study was conducted with 1318 patients receiving inpatient treatment at a
university hospital between November 2017 and November 2018.Data were collected using
the Patient Information Form and the Scale of Patients’ Attitude Toward Using Patient Rights.
The participants’ mean age was 61.52±11.19, and 58.8% of them were male, 74.2%
were married, and 53% were primary school graduates. Moreover, 59.4% of the participants
had undergone treatment in internal clinics, 40.4% had a chronic disease, 76.6% had a history
of hospitalization, 92.6% had reported health problems related to treatment or the hospital
setting to the healthcare staff, and 96.1% did not believe that their patient rights had been
violated in the healthcare institution where in they received treatment. Among the patients
who felt that their rights had been violated, 41.2% made a complaint to the communication
center of the Ministry of Health.
Also, 93% of the participants had never had an argument with healthcare staff before,
97.3% did not see violence as a way to claim a right, 86.2% had never wished to commit
violence against healthcare staff throughout the hospitalization process, and 94.2% had never
committed violence against healthcare staff. According to the participants, the three main
reasons responsible for the violence committed against healthcare staff were lack of education
(68.4%), having to wait in the hospital for a long period of time (43.1%) and impatient
behaviors of patients and patient relatives (35.1%).
The mean total score on the scale of patients’ Attitude Toward Using Patient Rights,
was found to be 126.02±13.41, with statistically significant differences observed according to
patients’ age, educational status, presence of a chronic disease, a history of hospitalization,
experience in previously sharing their problems with healthcare staff, and desire to commit
violenceagainst healthcare staff (p<0.05).
Preventing undesirable events in healthcare institutions is possibleif a trust-based
relationship can be established between healthcare staff and patients/relatives and mutual
respect is shown through the protection of their shared rights and responsibilities
