Assessment of public health issues of migrants at the Greek-Turkish border, April 2011

A joint mission to assess the public health situation of migrants in Greek detention centres was undertaken in April 2011 by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe. The assessment visit follows the increased migration to the Evros prefecture, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, at the Greek-Turkish border where large numbers of migrants are entering Greece via the Evros River, a natural border. Migrants are housed in local detention centres. The main problem in detention centres are the substandard hygiene conditions, especially overcrowding and lack of personal hygiene facilities, lack of basic supplies and lack of access to fresh air and physical exercise. As the migration route via the Evros region is increasingly used since 2009, and due to the unstable political situation in North Africa and the Middle East, an increased influx of migrants was to be expected with the falling water levels of the Evros River in summer, resulting in further deterioration of the already critical situation in the Thrace region’s detention centres

Lode De Clercq, Rudi Mertens en Elke Denissen - Het zwembad aan de Veldstraat in Antwerpen. [The swimming pool at the Veldstraat in Antwerp.]Hoewel in 1932 gebouwd volgens een zeer modern en goed doordacht concept, was dit oudst bewaarde zwembad van Antwerpen dringend aan restauratie toe. Het werd een zorgvuldig balanceren tussen respect voor het historisch materiaal en aanpassing aan de nieuwe strengere normen voor publiekszwembaden, voorgesteld door één van de architecten, Rudi Mertens, erfgoedconsulent Elke Denissen en vooronderzoeker Lode De Clercq. Getrouwe replicas van oorspronkelijk bouwmateriaal bleken gelukkig voorhanden. De hedendaagse toevoeging van een hamam verhoogt nog de attractiviteit van deze vernieuwde watertempel.Dieter Nuytten - Bouwgeschiedenis en restauratie van het locutorium van de parkabdij in Heverlee. [Building history and restoration of the Heverlee Park abbeys Locutorium.]Strategisch gesitueerd binnen het complex, vervulde het Spreekhuys of Locutorium eertijds de functie van ontmoetingsplaats tussen de norbertijner monniken en hun bezoekende verwanten. In het globale herbestemmingsplan zal dit gebouw, dat opvalt door zijn gereconstrueerde kleurige buitenafwerking, een gelijkaardige functie als onthaalknooppunt vervullen. Dieter Nuytten beschrijft de restauratie, het zorgvuldig vooronderzoek en de weloverwogen behandelingsopties van dit sleutelmonument binnen het grote abdijcomplex.Walter Sevenants - De kasteelsite Butsel in Boutersem. [The castle site Butsel in Boutersem.]Op een landtong, diep ingesneden in de vallei van de Velp, bevond zich ooit de woning van de Heren van Boutersem. In 2001 werden bij graafwerkzaamheden van Aquafin resten van dit kasteel ontdekt. De interesse van archeologen was meteen gewekt en in opdracht van de Vlaamse overheid volgde een grondige archeologische evaluatie. Prevention and Treatment of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) with Non-Pharmacological Interventions: Clinical Recommendations from a Systematic Scoping Review and an Expert Consensus Process

Background: Most individuals affected by cancer who are treated with certain chemotherapies suffer of CIPN. Therefore, there is a high patient and provider interest in complementary non-pharmacological therapies, but its evidence base has not yet been clearly pointed out in the context of CIPN. Methods: The results of a scoping review overviewing the published clinical evidence on the application of complementary therapies for improving the complex CIPN symptomatology are synthesized with the recommendations of an expert consensus process aiming to draw attention to supportive strategies for CIPN. The scoping review, registered at PROSPERO 2020 (CRD 42020165851), followed the PRISMA-ScR and JBI guidelines. Relevant studies published in Pubmed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PEDro, Cochrane CENTRAL, and CINAHL between 2000 and 2021 were included. CASP was used to evaluate the methodologic quality of the studies. Results: Seventy-five studies with mixed study quality met the inclusion criteria. Manipulative therapies (including massage, reflexology, therapeutic touch), rhythmical embrocations, movement and mind–body therapies, acupuncture/acupressure, and TENS/Scrambler therapy were the most frequently analyzed in research and may be effective treatment options for CIPN. The expert panel approved 17 supportive interventions, most of them were phytotherapeutic interventions including external applications and cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, and tactile stimulation. More than two-thirds of the consented interventions were rated with moderate to high perceived clinical effectiveness in therapeutic use. Conclusions: The evidence of both the review and the expert panel supports a variety of complementary procedures regarding the supportive treatment of CIPN; however, the application on patients should be individually weighed in each case. Based on this meta-synthesis, interprofessional healthcare teams may open up a dialogue with patients interested in non-pharmacological treatment options to tailor complementary counselling and treatments to their needs
