    Relating the Expression of Soil Redoximorphic Features to Soil Texture, pH, and Cation Exchange Capacity

    Three laboratory studies were performed to elucidate the influence of soil texture, pH, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) on the concentration of ferrous Fe in soil solution and the resulting expression of soil redoximorphic features. The objectives were: 1) assess the buffering effects of CEC on ferrous Fe concentration in soil solution, 2) evaluate the effects of pH on the concentration of ferrous Fe in soil solution, and 3) observe the expression of redoximorphic features in soils with varying texture and CEC. The studies concentrated on seasonally wet soils from the Texas Gulf Coast Prairie. Selected soils included Alfisols and Vertisols with characteristics ranging from coarse-loamy to very-fine in texture, strongly acidic to neutral in soil reaction, and siliceous, mixed, and smectitic in mineralogy. The soils included the Pledger clay microlow (acidic, fine-textured), Pledger clay microhigh (neutral, fine-textured), China clay (acidic, fine-textured), Cieno loam (acidic, fine-loamy), Orelia sandy clay loam (neutral, fine-loamy), Gessner fine sandy loam (acidic, coarse-loamy), and Orelia fine sandy loam (neutral, coarse-loamy). The studies provided the following information: 1) fine-textured soils with higher CEC contained more ferrous Fe in solution, 2) ferrous Fe concentrations in the acidic fine-loamy and coarse-loamy soils were higher than the neutral soils for the same textural class, 3) acidic and neutral fine-textured soils contained more ferrous Fe in solution than the remaining soils, 4) the highest percentage of redox concentrations was observed in the acidic, fine-textured soil, 5) the acidic fine-loamy and coarse-loamy soils exhibited a greater percentage of Fe depletions, and 6) a higher percentage of redox features were observed by micromorphic analysis (i.e., point counts under a binocular stereoscopic microscope) than by macromorphic descriptions. This research showed that differing soil characteristics affect the reductive dissolution and translocation of Fe, and subsequent formation of redox features

    A feature-based comparison of local search and the Christofides algorithm for the travelling salesperson problem

    Understanding the behaviour of well-known algorithms for classical NP-hard optimisation problems is still a difficult task. With this paper, we contribute to this research direction and carry out a feature based comparison of local search and the well-known Christofides approximation algorithm for the Traveling Salesperson Problem. We use an evolutionary algorithm approach to construct easy and hard instances for the Christofides algorithm, where we measure hardness in terms of approximation ratio. Our results point out important features and lead to hard and easy instances for this famous algorithm.     A novel and robust method for counting components within bio-molecular complexes using fluorescence microscopy and statistical modelling

    Cellular biology occurs through myriad interactions between diverse molecular components, many of which assemble in to specific complexes. Various techniques can provide a qualitative survey of which components are found in a given complex. However, quantitative analysis of the absolute number of molecules within a complex (known as stoichiometry) remains challenging. Here we provide a novel method that combines fluorescence microscopy and statistical modelling to derive accurate molecular counts. We have devised a system in which batches of a given biomolecule are differentially labelled with spectrally distinct fluorescent dyes (label A or B), and mixed such that B-labelled molecules are vastly outnumbered by those with label A. Complexes, containing this component, are then simply scored as either being positive or negative for label B. The frequency of positive complexes is directly related to the stoichiometry of interaction and molecular counts can be inferred by statistical modelling. We demonstrate this method using complexes of Adenovirus particles and monoclonal antibodies, achieving counts that are in excellent agreement with previous estimates. Beyond virology, this approach is readily transferable to other experimental systems and, therefore, provides a powerful tool for quantitative molecular biology

    Near threshold eta meson production in the d+d->alpha+eta reaction

    The d+d->alpha+eta reaction has been investigated near threshold using the ANKE facility at COSY-Juelich. Both total and differential cross sections have been measured at two excess energies, Q=2.6 MeV and 7.7 MeV, with a subthreshold measurement being undertaken at Q=-2.6 MeV to study the physical background. While consistent with isotropy at the lower energy, the angular distribution reveals a pronounced anisotropy at the higher one, indicating the presence of higher partial waves. Options for the decomposition into partial amplitudes and their consequences for determination of the s-wave eta-alpha scattering length are discussed.Comment: 8pp, fig.3 added, normalisation in eq.4.1 correcte

    New determination of the mass of the eta meson at COSY-ANKE

    A value for the mass of the eta meson has been determined at the COSY-ANKE facility through the measurement of a set of deuteron laboratory beam momenta and associated 3He center-of-mass momenta in the d+p -> 3He+X reaction. The eta was then identified by the missing-mass peak and the production threshold determined. The individual beam momenta were fixed with a relative precision of 3 x 10^-5 for values around 3 GeV/c by using a polarized deuteron beam and inducing an artificial depolarizing spin resonance, which occurs at a well-defined frequency. The final-state momenta in the two-body d+p -> 3He+eta reaction were investigated in detail by studying the size of the 3He momentum ellipse with the forward detection system of the ANKE spectrometer. Final alignment of the spectrometer for this high precision experiment was achieved through a comprehensive study of the 3He final-state momenta as a function of the center-of-mass angles, taking advantage of the full geometrical acceptance. The value obtained for the mass, m(eta)=(547.873 +- 0.005(stat) +- 0.027(syst)) MeV/c^2, is consistent and competitive with other recent measurements, in which the meson was detected through its decay products.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, published versio

    Absence of spin dependence in the final state interaction of the d(pol) p --> 3He eta reaction

    The deuteron tensor analysing power t_{20} of the d(pol) p --> 3He eta reaction has been measured at the COSY-ANKE facility in small steps in excess energy Q up to Q = 11 MeV. Despite the square of the production amplitude varying by over a factor of five through this range, t_{20} shows little or no energy dependence. This is evidence that the final state interaction causing the energy variation is not influenced by the spin configuration in the entrance channel. The weak angular dependence observed for t_{20} provides useful insight into the amplitude structure near threshold.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Kaon Pair Production in Proton--Proton Collisions

    The differential and total cross sections for kaon pair production in the pp->ppK+K- reaction have been measured at three beam energies of 2.65, 2.70, and 2.83 GeV using the ANKE magnetic spectrometer at the COSY-Juelich accelerator. These near-threshold data are separated into pairs arising from the decay of the phi-meson and the remainder. For the non-phi selection, the ratio of the differential cross sections in terms of the K-p and K+p invariant masses is strongly peaked towards low masses. This effect can be described quantitatively by using a simple ansatz for the K-p final state interaction, where it is seen that the data are sensitive to the magnitude of an effective K-p scattering length. When allowance is made for a small number of phi events where the K- rescatters from the proton, the phi region is equally well described at all three energies. A very similar phenomenon is discovered in the ratio of the cross sections as functions of the K-pp and K+pp invariant masses and the identical final state interaction model is also very successful here. The world data on the energy dependence of the non-phi total cross section is also reproduced, except possibly for the results closest to threshold.Comment: 12 two-column pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
