Posturographic pattern of patients with chronic subjective dizziness before and after vestibular rehabilitation.
Chronic subjective dizziness (CSD) is frequently encountered in neurotology clinics. This diagnosis is mainly clinical, but computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) could be a helpful instrumental tool in the identification of these patients and validation of the treatment. This study was aimed to look for a specific posturographic pattern among patients diagnosed with CSD, and to eventually visualize improvement after vestibular rehabilitation.
Single center, retrospective review from 2009 to 2014. We included patients diagnosed with CSD who underwent CDP in their neurotologic assessment. For those patients who benefited from vestibular rehabilitation, we compared their pre- and post-rehabilitation posturographies.
We included 114 patients, of whom 74% had known anxiety disorders and 33% a history of past vestibular disorder. 62% of the assessment posturographies were abnormal. The most affected sub-items were limit of stability, composite score of sensory organization tests and condition 5 in respectively 34%, 23% and 20% of the cases. In univariate analysis, only pathologic videonystagmography and history of unilateral vestibular dysfunction were significantly related to abnormal posturography. In the 42 patients who had vestibular rehabilitation and a post rehabilitation posturography, the proportion of abnormal posturography significantly dropped from 79% to 33% (p < 0.001). When it was assessed, 79% of the patients reported a subjective improvement.
Patients with CSD have a high rate of abnormal posturography, but without a specific pattern. Vestibular rehabilitation is an effective tool in the therapeutic armamentarium
Facial Pain Associated with CPAP Use: Intra-Sinusal Third Molar
Objective. This paper describes a patient with left hemifacial pain elicited by the use of a CPAP mask. Case Report. A 74-year-old man was referred with a history of pain in the left maxillary sinus related to the use of his CPAP interface, thereby prohibiting the use of the latter. Computed tomography revealed an intra-sinusal ectopic third molar in the left maxillary sinus floor corresponding to the painful area. After removal of the ectopic tooth under local anesthesia by a Caldwell-Luc approach, the patient was relieved of his symptoms. Conclusion. Although an ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus is rare, this case points out the importance of actively looking for a regional problem if patients cannot tolerate the CPAP interface since this can lead to issues of incompliance and medical complications due to the untreated obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome
Effects of ATLAS Tile calorimeter failures on jets and missing transverse energy measurements
Failures of the ATLAS Tile calorimeter would affect the jet energy resolution and would fake tails of missing transverse energy. Significant effects are expected in processes involving high transverse momentum jets ( GeV). These effects, their consequences, as well as methods to minimize them, are studied using simulated data for various degradation topologies and for different physics processes
Application of large area SiPMs for the readout of a plastic scintillator based timing detector
In this study an array of eight 6 mm x 6 mm area SiPMs was coupled to the end
of a long plastic scintillator counter which was exposed to a 2.5 GeV/c muon
beam at the CERN PS. Timing characteristics of bars with dimensions 150 cm x 6
cm x 1 cm and 120 cm x 11 cm x 2.5 cm have been studied. An 8-channel SiPM
anode readout ASIC (MUSIC R1) based on a novel low input impedance current
conveyor has been used to read out and amplify SiPMs independently and sum the
signals at the end. Prospects for applications in large-scale particle physics
detectors with timing resolution below 100 ps are provided in light of the
results

Diagnosing Spin at the LHC via Vector Boson Fusion
We propose a new technique for determining the spin of new massive particles
that might be discovered at the Large Hadron Collider. The method relies on
pair-production of the new particles in a kinematic regime where the vector
boson fusion production mechanism is enhanced. For this regime, we show that
the distribution of the leading jets as a function of their relative azimuthal
angle can be used to distinguish spin-0 from spin-1/2 particles. We illustrate
this effect by considering the particular cases of (i) strongly-interacting,
stable particles and (ii) supersymmetric particles carrying color charge. We
argue that this method should be applicable in a wide range of new physics

Scandal - A Facility For Elastic Neutron Scattering Studies in the 50-130 MeV Range
A facility for detection of scattered neutrons in the energy interval 50−130 MeV, SCANDAL (SCAttered Nucleon Detection AssembLy), is part of the standard detection system at the 20-180 MeV neutron beam facility of the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. It has primarily been used for studies of elastic neutron scattering, but it has been employed for (n,p) and (n,d) reaction experiments as well. Results of recent experiments are presented to illustrate the performance of the spectrometer. Recently, the facility has been upgraded to perform also (n,Xn') experiments. For this purpose, a new converter, CLODIA, has been developed and installed. Preliminary results of the commissioning of CLODIA will be presented

Atomic number dependence of hadron production at large transverse momentum in 300 GeV proton--nucleus collisions
In an experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory we have compared the production of large transverse momentum hadrons from targets of W, Ti, and Be bombarded by 300 GeV protons. The hadron yields were measured at 90{sup o} in the proton-nucleon c.m. system with a magnetic spectrometer equipped with 2 Cerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter. The production cross-sections have a dependence on the atomic number A that grows with P{sub perpendicular}, eventually leveling off proportional to A{sup1.1}
Neutron-induced Light Ion Production From Fe, Pb And U At 96 Mev
Double-differential cross sections for light-ion production (up to A=4) induced by 96 MeV neutrons have been measured for Fe, Pb and U. The experiments have been performed at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, using two independent devices, MEDLEY and SCANDAL. The recorded data cover a wide angular range (20º - 160º) with low energy thresholds. The work was performed within the HINDAS collaboration studying three of the most important nuclei for incineration of nuclear waste with accelerator-driven systems (ADS). The obtained cross section data are of particular interest for the understanding of the so-called pre-equilibrium stage in a nuclear reaction and are compared with model calculations performed with the GNASH, TALYS and PREEQ code
