    Calculations of the A_1 phonon frequency in photoexcited Tellurium

    Calculations of the A_1 phonon frequency in photoexcited tellurium are presented. The phonon frequency as a function of photoexcited carrier density and phonon amplitude is determined. Recent pump probe experiments are interpreted in the light of these calculatons. It is proposed that, in conjunction with measurements of the phonon period in ultra-fast pump-probe reflectivity experiments, the calculated frequency shifts can be used to infer the evolution of the density of photoexcited carriers on a sub-picosecond time-scale.Comment: 15 pages Latex, 3 postscript figure

    Dynamical phenomena in Fibonacci Semiconductor Superlattices

    We present a detailed study of the dynamics of electronic wavepackets in Fibonacci semiconductor superlattices, both in flat band conditions and subject to homogeneous electric fields perpendicular to the layers. Coherent propagation of electrons is described by means of a scalar Hamiltonian using the effective-mass approximation. We have found that an initial Gaussian wavepacket is filtered selectively when passing through the superlattice. This means that only those components of the wavepacket whose wavenumber belong to allowed subminibands of the fractal-like energy spectrum can propagate over the entire superlattice. The Fourier pattern of the transmitted part of the wavepacket presents clear evidences of fractality reproducing those of the underlying energy spectrum. This phenomenon persists even in the presence of unintentional disorder due to growth imperfections. Finally, we have demonstrated that periodic coherent-field induced oscillations (Bloch oscillations), which we are able to observe in our simulations of periodic superlattices, are replaced in Fibonacci superlattices by more complex oscillations displaying quasiperiodic signatures, thus sheding more light onto the very peculiar nature of the electronic states in these systems.Comment: 7 pagex, RevTex, 5 Postscript figures.     Resonant Raman Scattering in Antiferromagnets

    Two-magnon Raman scattering provides important information about electronic correlations in the insulating parent compounds of high-TcT_c materials. Recent experiments have shown a strong dependence of the Raman signal in B1gB_{1g} geometry on the frequency of the incoming photon. We present an analytical and numerical study of the Raman intensity in the resonant regime. It has been previously argued by one of us (A.Ch) and D. Frenkel that the most relevant contribution to the Raman vertex at resonance is given by the triple resonance diagram. We derive an expression for the Raman intensity in which we simultaneously include the enhancement due to the triple resonance and a final state interaction. We compute the two-magnon peak height (TMPH) as a function of incident frequency and find two maxima at ωres(1)2Δ+3J\omega^{(1)}_{res} \approx 2\Delta + 3J and ωres(2)2Δ+8J\omega^{(2)}_{res} \approx 2\Delta + 8J. We argue that the high-frequency maximum is cut only by a quasiparticle damping, while the low-frequency maximum has a finite amplitude even in the absence of damping. We also obtain an evolution of the Raman profile from an asymmetric form around ωres(1)\omega^{(1)}_{res} to a symmetric form around ωres(2)\omega^{(2)}_{res}. We further show that the TMPH depends on the fermionic quasiparticle damping, the next-nearest neighbor hopping term tt^{\prime} and the corrections to the interaction vertex between light and the fermionic current. We discuss our results in the context of recent experiments by Blumberg et al. on Sr2CuO2Cl2Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 and YBa2Cu3O6.1YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.1} and R\"{u}bhausen et al. on PrBa2Cu3O7PrBa_2Cu_3O_7 and show that the triple resonance theory yields a qualitative and to some extent also quantitative understanding of the experimental data.Comment: 19 pages, RevTeX, 16 figures embedded in the text, ps-file is also available at http://lifshitz.physics.wisc.edu/www/morr/morr_homepage.htm

    Opaque perfect lenses

    The response of the ``perfect lens'', consisting of a slab of lossless material of thickness dd with ϵ=μ=1\epsilon=\mu=-1 at one frequency ω0\omega_0 is investigated. It is shown that as time progresses the lens becomes increasingly opaque to any physical TM line dipole source located a distance d0<d/2d_0<d/2 from the lens and which has been turned on at time t=0t=0. Here a physical source is defined as one which supplies a bounded amount of energy per unit time. In fact the lens cloaks the source so that it is not visible from behind the lens either. For sources which are turned on exponentially slowly there is an exact correspondence between the response of the perfect lens in the long time constant limit and the response of lossy lenses in the low loss limit.     Krüppel-like factor 5 is an important mediator for lipopolysaccharide-induced proinflammatory response in intestinal epithelial cells

    Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacterially-derived endotoxin that elicits a strong proinflammatory response in intestinal epithelial cells. It is well established that LPS activates this response through NF-κB. In addition, LPS signals through the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. We previously demonstrated that the Krüppel-like factor 5 [KLF5; also known as intestine-enriched Krüppel-like factor (IKLF)] is activated by the MAPK. In the current study, we examined whether KLF5 mediates the signaling cascade elicited by LPS. Treatment of the intestinal epithelial cell line, IEC6, with LPS resulted in a dose- and time-dependent increase in KLF5 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels. Concurrently, mRNA levels of the p50 and p65 subunits of NF-κB were increased by LPS treatment. Pretreatment with the MAPK inhibitor, U0126, or the LPS antagonist, polymyxin B, resulted in an attenuation of KLF5, p50 and p65 NF-κB subunit mRNA levels from LPS treatment. Importantly, suppression of KLF5 by small interfering RNA (siRNA) resulted in a reduction in p50 and p65 subunit mRNA levels and NF-κB DNA binding activity in response to LPS. LPS treatment also led to an increase in secretion of TNF-α and IL-6 from IEC6, both of which were reduced by siRNA inhibition of KLF5. In addition, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) levels were increased in LPS-treated IEC6 cells and this increase was associated with increased adhesion of Jurkat lymphocytes to IEC6. The induction of ICAM-1 expression and T cell adhesion to IEC6 by LPS were both abrogated by siRNA inhibition of KLF5. These results indicate that KLF5 is an important mediator for the proinflammatory response elicited by LPS in intestinal epithelial cells

    Erythroid Kruppel-like factor directly activates the basic Kruppel-like factor gene in erythroid cells

    The Sp/Kriippel-like factor (Sp/KIf) family is comprised of around 25 zinc finger transcription factors that recognize CACCC boxes and GC-rich elements. We have investigated basic Kruppel-like factor (Bklf/Klf3) and show that in erythroid tissues its expression is highly dependent on another family member, erythroid Kruppel-like factor (Eklf/Kif1). We observe that Bklf mRNA is significantly reduced in erythroid tissues from Eklf-null murine embryos. We find that Bklf is driven primarily by two promoters, a ubiquitously active GC-rich upstream promoter, la, and an erythroid downstream promoter, 1b. Transcripts from the two promoters encode identical proteins. Interestingly, both the ubiquitous and the erythroid promoter are dependent on Eklf in erythroid cells. Eklf also activates both promoters in transient assays. Experiments utilizing an inducible form of Eklf demonstrate activation of the endogenous Bklf gene in the presence of an inhibitor of protein synthesis. The kinetics of activation are also consistent with Bklf being a direct Eklf target. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays confirm that Eklf associates with both Bklf promoters. Eklf is typically an activator of transcription, whereas Bklf is noted as a repressor. Our results support the hypothesis that feedback cross-regulation occurs within the Sp/Klf family in vivo

    Fluorescence decay in aperiodic Frenkel lattices

    We study motion and capture of excitons in self-similar linear systems in which interstitial traps are arranged according to an aperiodic sequence, focusing our attention on Fibonacci and Thue-Morse systems as canonical examples. The decay of the fluorescence intensity following a broadband pulse excitation is evaluated by solving the microscopic equations of motion of the Frenkel exciton problem. We find that the average decay is exponential and depends only on the concentration of traps and the trapping rate. In addition, we observe small-amplitude oscillations coming from the coupling between the low-lying mode and a few high-lying modes through the topology of the lattice. These oscillations are characteristic of each particular arrangement of traps and they are directly related to the Fourier transform of the underlying lattice.     Supersonic strain front driven by a dense electron-hole plasma

    We study coherent strain in (001) Ge generated by an ultrafast laser-initiated high density electron-hole plasma. The resultant coherent pulse is probed by time-resolved x-ray diffraction through changes in the anomalous transmission. The acoustic pulse front is driven by ambipolar diffusion of the electron-hole plasma and propagates into the crystal at supersonic speeds. Simulations of the strain including electron-phonon coupling, modified by carrier diffusion and Auger recombination, are in good agreement with the observed dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Observation of insulating nanoislands in ferromagnetic GaMnAs

    Resonant Raman data on ferromagnetic GaMnAs reveal the existence of a new kind of defect: insulating nanoislands consisting of substitutional Mn-Ga acceptors surrounded by interstitial Mn-I donors. As indicated by the observation of a sharp 1S(3/2)-> 2S(3/2) Raman transition at similar to 703 cm(-1), the acceptor-bound holes inside the islands are isolated from the metallic surroundings. Instead, Mn-bound excitons do couple to the ferromagnetic environment, as shown by the presence of associated Raman magnon side bands. This leads to an estimate of 5-10 nm for the nanoisland radius. The islands disappear after annealing due to the removal of the Mn-I ions

    Testing real-time systems using TINA

    The paper presents a technique for model-based black-box conformance testing of real-time systems using the Time Petri Net Analyzer TINA. Such test suites are derived from a prioritized time Petri net composed of two concurrent sub-nets specifying respectively the expected behaviour of the system under test and its environment.We describe how the toolbox TINA has been extended to support automatic generation of time-optimal test suites. The result is optimal in the sense that the set of test cases in the test suite have the shortest possible accumulated time to be executed. Input/output conformance serves as the notion of implementation correctness, essentially timed trace inclusion taking environment assumptions into account. Test cases selection is based either on using manually formulated test purposes or automatically from various coverage criteria specifying structural criteria of the model to be fulfilled by the test suite. We discuss how test purposes and coverage criterion are specified in the linear temporal logic SE-LTL, derive test sequences, and assign verdicts
