Comparing Avian Diversity and Anthropogenic Disturbance at Sendero Los Quetzales Cerro Punta, Panamá

This report summarizes the survey of land and avian diversity along a transect that runs from the exterior to the interior of the Los Quetzales Trail of Parque Nacional Volcán Barú in Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, Panamá. The region of Cerro Punta is Panamá’s primary producer of produce and also home to one of the most biodiverse land reserves in the world. Despite protection efforts the area is continuously threatened by human development. The study juxtaposes calculated Shannon-Wiener Biodiversity Indices across graduated levels of anthropogenic disturbance to determine if there is a significant difference in biodiversity between areas with low, intermediate, and high disturbance. Surveys were conducted using a Timed Species Count (TSC) and rapid vegetation assessments. Analysis revealed that although there is not significant difference in biodiversity between areas with low and intermediate disturbance, there is a significant different between the biodiversity of both low and intermediate disturbed areas and the biodiversity of highly disturbed areas. Due to its small scale, these conclusions are limited to the area of investigation. However, this information may be helpful to conservationists hoping to preserve the diversity in Cerro Punta and along the Los Quetzales Trail

Professional Development of the BSW Student

In order to test the hypothesis that undergraduate social work students, over the course of two years, will move in the desired direction on scales measuring humanistic values and on scales measuring orientations to profession, client, agency or community, students in one BSW program were studied longitudinally. Forty-one students were tested in 1978 and in 1980. Students obtained significantly higher scores on a scale of humanistic values over the course of two years. Students scored higher on profession and client orientations and lower on agency orientation over the same period. Students manifested a strong career interest in social work education at the MSW level

Lifetime values or limits for low-lying levels in 33S, 38Ar and 40K have been found from Îł-ray Doppler shift attenuation (DSA) in Au, Cu, and C solids, and for levels in 33S and 43Ca by DSA in Xe and Ar gases at various pressures up to 30 kg/cm2

The impact of DRGs on social workers in four social work departments located in one Northeast State was assessed by interviews with all social work staff and administrators. The impact of DRGs was determined to be substantial. Implications for social work education and practice are considered

IRREGULARITIES IN THE YRAST LINE OF 156Er

The variation of the moment of inertia vs the rotational frequency has been investigated at high spin values using the141Pr(19F, 4nγ) 156Er reaction. In addition to the backbending at I = 12 ħ, a second one has been found at I = 26 ħ. Calculations performed by the Warsaw group with the HFB cranking model suggest a probable neutron effect

RĂ©solution en temps d'un circuit de coĂŻncidences particule gamma

Des détecteurs à barrière de surface ont été utilisés dans un circuit de coïncidences rapides particule-gamma en vue de mesurer des vies moyennes de noyaux dans des états excités. L'influence sur la résolution en temps de différents facteurs (résistivité, tension de polarisation, etc.) a été étudiée

International audienceThis research studies a postgraduate programme whose pedagogy is based on experiential learning approach, work and team learning. Based on self-determination theory of Deci & Ryan (1985), the study highlights and describes how the team impacts motivation for action of its members.Cette recherche étudie un dispositif universitaire dont la pédagogie est fondée sur l'apprentissage par action, travail et apprentissage en équipe. En s'appuyant sur la théorie de l'auto-détermination de Deci et Ryan (1985) l'étude met en évidence et décrit la manière dont l'équipe impacte la motivation à agir de ses membres

Effect of pronunciation instruction on L2 learners’ listening comprehension

This study explored the potential impact of pronunciation instruction on L2 listening comprehension. Seventy-two intermediate Vietnamese EFL university learners formed two groups. The pronunciation group (n=35) received seven weekly 45-minute pronunciation instruction sessions targeting segmental and suprasegmental features of English. The control group (n=37) did not receive any pronunciation instruction. Weekly reflections, an exit questionnaire and focus group interviews were used to investigate learners’ perceptions of the impact of the pronunciation instruction. Results showed that the two groups’ immediate listening posttest scores did not differ significantly after the first two sessions on syllables and consonants/vowels. However, the pronunciation group outperformed the control group after three further pronunciation sessions on word stress, thought groups and sentence focus, but these differences disappeared on subsequent immediate and delayed post-tests. Self-report data indicated learners’ positive perceptions of the helpfulness of the pronunciation instruction and how the gained pronunciation knowledge helped improve their listening comprehension
