[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]RIVAGEA proactive policy to fight against floods and soil erosion is supported by multiple project owners in Normandy including funding from the Agence de l'Eau Seine Normandie. The amenities include in particular embankment dams for flood control. The questions raised by owners about certain elements of design or construction of these works have led the Water Agency to mission the Cemagref for: - Analyse these practices through the expertise of several dams; - Propose a synthesis of design rules and construction requirements in the particular context of these small works. The report covers these two components.

International audienceBoth in France and at the global level, hydraulic works have remained excluded from semi-probabilistic methods and regulations and their design was, until recently, of a deterministic nature. As far as embankment hydraulic works are more specifically concerned, there are no formal rules for their design. It is based on guidelines, leading to heterogeneities in the French practice. In this context, the French Commitee on Large Dams FRCOLD - initiated, with a panel of experts from the French engineering industry and related government agencies, a research project to define a semi-probabilistic limit-state method for the design of embankment hydraulic works. This paper accounts for the work done over two years and more specifically extends the work on embankment sliding mechanism. It determines the position of embankment hydraulic works in relation to Eurocode 7. It briefly outlines the suggested semi-probabilistic limit-state method and focuses on the sliding limit-state. Applying the method to a pseudo-homogeneous dam helps comparing the standard deterministic practice, the Eurocode 7-based approach and the developed semi-probabilistic method

A simplified method for estimating Newmark displacements of mountain reservoirs

International audienceIn the present article we propose a new simplified method for assessing the seismic performance of large mountain reservoirs. The pseudo-empirical regression model is established on the basis of decoupled dynamic analyses performed on 7 accelerograms applied to 33 structural and geotechnical configurations. We study the influence of embankment geometries and mechanical properties on the prediction of earthquake-induced permanent displacements estimated by Newmark analyses. We also discuss the relevance of our model by carrying out comparisons with existing simplified models and with post-seismic field observations on earth dams. A regression analysis using parameters of interest provides a pseudo-empirical predictive equation to carry out rapid, preliminary assessments of the seismic performance of mountain reservoirs
