Oxa-181-producing extraintestinal pathogenic escherichia coli sequence type 410 isolated from a dog in Portugal
Research Areas: Microbiology ; Pharmacology & PharmacyTwo multidrug-resistant and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli clones of sequence type 410 were isolated from fecal samples of a dog with skin infection on admission to an animal hospital in Portugal and 1 month after discharge. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 126,409-bp Col156/IncFIA/IncFII multidrug resistance plasmid and a 51,479-bp IncX3 blaOXA-181-containing plasmid. The chromosome and plasmids carried virulence genes characteristic for uropathogenic E. coli, indicating that dogs may carry multidrug-resistant E. coli isolates related to those causing urinary tract infections in humans.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Assessing the impact of occupant behaviour on the electricity consumption for lighting and small power in office buildings
Lighting and small power will typically account for more than half of the total electricity consumption in an office building. Significant variations in electricity used by different tenants suggest that occupants can have a significant impact on the electricity demand for these end-uses. Yet current modelling techniques fail to represent the interaction between occupant and the building environment in a realistic manner. Understanding the impact of such behaviours is crucial to improve the methodology behind current energy modelling techniques, aiming to minimise the significant gap between predicted and in-use performance of buildings. A better understanding of the impact of occupant behaviour on electricity consumption can also inform appropriate energy saving strategies focused on behavioural change. This paper reports on a study aiming to assess the intent of occupants to switch off lighting and appliances when not in use in office buildings. Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the assessment takes the form of a questionnaire and investigates three predictors to behaviour individually: 1) behavioural attitude; 2) subjective norms; 3) perceived behavioural control. The paper details the development of the assessment procedure and discusses preliminary findings from the study. The questionnaire results are compared against electricity consumption data for individual zones within a multi-tenanted office building. Initial results demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between perceived behavioural control and energy consumption for lighting and small powe
Effect of different resistance exercise repetition velocities on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption and energetic expenditure
The excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) consists of the excess oxygen consumed above a resting state following exercise. Performance of resistance exercise can significantly disrupt the body’s homeostasis, with the EPOC being dependent on the specific combination of prescriptive variables. Presently, the effects of different repetition velocities on VO2 and caloric expenditure during and following resistance exercise bouts have not been completely elucidated. Objective: To examine the effect of different repetition velocities on EPOC and total energetic expenditure during and following resistance exercise bouts. Methods: Twenty women (34.6 ± 5.5 years; 159 ± 4.1 cm; 55.1 ± 3.4 kg; 24±2.5 kg/m-²; 18.9 ± 4.3 % body fat) performed two resistance exercise bouts that differed only in the velocity of repetitions: sequence 1 (SEQ1) involved 1 second concentric and eccentric phases and sequence 2 (SEQ2) involved 2 second concentric and eccentric phases. Both bouts utilized a 70% of 1-RM load for all exercises, performed for 3 sets of 10 repetitions. The respired gas analysis was assessed before, during, and for 60 minutes following each bout. Results: None of the variables assessed (i.e. VO2, VCO2, VE/VO2, VE/ VCO2, VE, RQ) were significantly different between bouts (p \u3e 0.05). Conclusion: A relatively slower repetition velocity will produce similar energy expenditure during and following resistance exercise as a relatively faster repetition velocity, as long as the total volume is equal between resistance exercise bouts

An atomic scale study of Si-doped AlAs by cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory
Silicon (Si) donors in GaAs have been the topic of extensive studies since Si
is the most common and well understood n-type dopant in III-V semiconductor
devices and substrates. The indirect bandgap of AlAs compared to the direct one
of GaAs leads to interesting effects when introducing Si dopants. Here we
present a study of cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (X-STM) and
density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study Si donors in AlAs at the
atomic scale. Based on their crystal symmetry and contrast strengths, we
identify Si donors up to four layers below the (110) surface of AlAs.
Interestingly, their short-range local density of states (LDOS) is very similar
to Si atoms in the (110) surface of GaAs. Additionally we show high-resolution
images of Si donors in all these layers. For empty state imaging, the
experimental and simulated STM images based on DFT show excellent agreement for
Si donor up to two layers below the surface
Multiple novel prostate cancer susceptibility signals identified by fine-mapping of known risk loci among Europeans
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous common prostate cancer (PrCa) susceptibility loci. We have
fine-mapped 64 GWAS regions known at the conclusion of the iCOGS study using large-scale genotyping and imputation in
25 723 PrCa cases and 26 274 controls of European ancestry. We detected evidence for multiple independent signals at 16
regions, 12 of which contained additional newly identified significant associations. A single signal comprising a spectrum of
correlated variation was observed at 39 regions; 35 of which are now described by a novel more significantly associated lead SNP,
while the originally reported variant remained as the lead SNP only in 4 regions. We also confirmed two association signals in
Europeans that had been previously reported only in East-Asian GWAS. Based on statistical evidence and linkage disequilibrium
(LD) structure, we have curated and narrowed down the list of the most likely candidate causal variants for each region.
Functional annotation using data from ENCODE filtered for PrCa cell lines and eQTL analysis demonstrated significant
enrichment for overlap with bio-features within this set. By incorporating the novel risk variants identified here alongside the
refined data for existing association signals, we estimate that these loci now explain ∼38.9% of the familial relative risk of PrCa,
an 8.9% improvement over the previously reported GWAS tag SNPs. This suggests that a significant fraction of the heritability of
PrCa may have been hidden during the discovery phase of GWAS, in particular due to the presence of multiple independent
signals within the same regio
