    Combined miRNA and mRNA sequencing reveals the defensive strategies of resistant YHY15 rice against differentially virulent brown planthoppers

    IntroductionThe brown planthopper (BPH) poses a significant threat to rice production in Asia. The use of resistant rice varieties has been effective in managing this pest. However, the adaptability of BPH to resistant rice varieties has led to the emergence of virulent populations, such as biotype Y BPH. YHY15 rice, which carries the BPH resistance gene Bph15, exhibits notable resistance to biotype 1 BPH but is susceptible to biotype Y BPH. Limited information exists regarding how resistant rice plants defend against BPH populations with varying levels of virulence.MethodsIn this study, we integrated miRNA and mRNA expression profiling analyses to study the differential responses of YHY15 rice to both avirulent (biotype 1) and virulent (biotype Y) BPH.ResultsYHY15 rice demonstrated a rapid response to biotype Y BPH infestation, with significant transcriptional changes occurring within 6 hours. The biotype Y-responsive genes were notably enriched in photosynthetic processes. Accordingly, biotype Y BPH infestation induced more intense transcriptional responses, affecting miRNA expression, defenserelated metabolic pathways, phytohormone signaling, and multiple transcription factors. Additionally, callose deposition was enhanced in biotype Y BPH-infested rice seedlings.DiscussionThese findings provide comprehensive insights into the defense mechanisms of resistant rice plants against virulent BPH, and may potentially guide the development of insect-resistant rice varieties

    Flexible lead-free ba0.5 sr0.5 tio3 /0.4bifeo3-0.6srtio3 dielectric film capacitor with high energy storage performance

    Ferroelectric thin film capacitors have triggered great interest in pulsed power systems because of their high-power density and ultrafast charge–discharge speed, but less attention has been paid to the realization of flexible capacitors for wearable electronics and power systems. In this work, a flexible Ba0.5 Sr0.5 TiO3 /0.4BiFeO3-0.6SrTiO3 thin film capacitor is synthesized on mica substrate. It possesses an energy storage density of Wrec ~ 62 J cm−3, combined with an efficiency of η ~ 74% due to the moderate breakdown strength (3000 kV cm−1 ) and the strong relaxor behavior. The energy storage performances for the film capacitor are also very stable over a broad temperature range (−50–200◦ C) and frequency range (500 Hz–20 kHz). Moreover, the Wrec and η are stabilized after 108 fatigue cycles. Additionally, the superior energy storage capability can be well maintained under a small bending radius (r = 2 mm), or after 104 mechanical bending cycles. These results reveal that the Ba0.5 Sr0.5 TiO3 /0.4BiFeO3-0.6SrTiO3 film capacitors in this work have great potential for use in flexible microenergy storage systems

    Fabrication and Characterization of Botanical-Based Double-Layered Emulsion: Protection of DHA and Astaxanthin Based on Interface Remodeling

    Both DHA and astaxanthin, with multiple conjugated double bonds, are considered as health-promoting molecules. However, their utilizations into food systems are restricted due to their poor water solubility and high oxidizability, plus their certain off-smell. In this study, the interactions between perilla protein isolate (PPI) and flaxseed gum (FG) were firstly investigated using multiple spectroscopies, suggesting that hydrophobic, electrostatic force and hydrogen bonds played important roles. Additionally, double-layer emulsion was constructed by layer-by-layer deposition technology and exhibited preferable effects on masking the fishy smell of algae oil. Calcium ions also showed an improving effect on the elasticity modulus of O/W emulsions and was managed to significantly protect the stability of co-delivered astaxanthin and DHA, without additional antioxidants during storage for 21 days. The vegan system produced in this study may, therefore, be suitable for effective delivery of both ω-3 fatty acid and carotenoids for their further incorporation into food systems, such as plant-based yoghourt, etc
