    Acute Cervical Epidural Hematoma: Case Report.

    A 74 year-old patient with a nocturnal onset of neck and chest pain was brought to an emergency clinic. Physical examination and cardiac assessment were normal. Three hours after the addmittance, a flaccid paralysis of the four limbs supervened. Suspecting of an unusual onset of central nervous system infection, a lumbar puncture was performed, yielding 20 ml of normal cerebrospinal fluid. Thirty oinutes after the puncture, the patient completely regained neurological funcion. He was then referred to a General Hospital where a computed tomography (CT) scan was done showing a large cervical epidural bleeding in the posterolateral region of C4/C5 extending to C7/Th1, along with a C6 vertebral body hemangioma. A magnetic resonance imaging revealed the same CT findings. A normal selective angiography of vertebral arteries, carotid arteries and thyreocervical trunk was carried out. Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (ASSEH) is a rare but dramatic cause of neurological impairment. In this article we report a fortunate case of complete recovery after an unusual spine cord decompression. We also review the current literature concerning diagnosis and treatment of ASSEH.58726-3

    O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliar a composição mineral do resíduo salino sólido (RSS) proveniente de dez tanques aquícolas, colhendo-se três amostras por tanque. Foram determinados os teores de N, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Na, Cl, P, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr. O RSS apresentou grande diversidade de elementos minerais, baixa concentração dos principais minerais presentes nos suplementos comerciais como o Ca e o P e heterogeneidade em suas composições com relação aos diferentes tanques. Foi ainda observada a presença de metais pesados, em que para o Pb e Cd os valores médios estão acima da faixa considerada normal, porém, em alguns dos tanques amostrados os valores são inferiores a faixa limite

    Stochastic Quantization of Real-Time Thermal Field Theory

    We use the stochastic quantization method to obtain the free scalar propagator of a finite temperature field theory formulated in Minkowski spacetime. First we use the Markovian stochastic quantization approach to present the two-point function of the theory. Second, we assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel and Einstein's relations with colored noise. The convergence of the stochastic processes in the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter of these Markovian and non-Markovian Langevin equations for a free scalar theory is obtained. Our formalism can be the starting point to discuss systems at finite temperature out of equilibrium

    Uso de compostos orgânicos produzidos a partir de resíduos da agropecuária como fertlizantes na cultura do milho.

    A produção agropecuária e a agroindústria geram grandes quantidades de resíduos orgânicos, que precisam ser corretamente descartados para evitar a ocorrência de danos ambientais. A reciclagem dos nutrientes desses resíduos proporcionada pelo uso desses materiais como fertilizantes de culturas agrícolas é uma das estratégias para o manejo das grandes quantidades geradas no processo produtivo. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a eficiência agronômica de dois compostos orgânicos produzidos a partir de resíduos de frigorífico (conteúdo ruminal) e de cama-de-aviário. Foram conduzidos experimentos em que os tratamentos consistiram em fertilização exclusivamente mineral, equivalente a 100 kg/ha de N (sulfato de amônio), 120 kg/ha de P2O5 (MAP) e 120 kg/ha de K2O (KCl), aplicação de um composto orgânico elaborado a partir de resíduos de frigorífico e um outro composto orgânico elaborado com cama de aviário, nas doses equivalentes a 1 ton ha-1, 2 ton ha-1, 3 ton ha-1 e 4 ton ha-1, além da testemunha, sem fertilização. Para os tratamentos com fertilização orgânica houve complementação de nitrogênio e potássio em cobertura, de modo a se atingir os mesmos níveis desses elementos veiculados no tratamento de fertilização exclusivamente mineral. As respostas da cultura de milho a ambos compostos foram pouco pronunciadas, observando-se pouco ganho em relação à testemunha. Em ambos casos as respostas às doses aplicadas de composto foram inferiores ao alcançado pela fertilização mineral

    For spatially bounded free fields, the Bekenstein bound states that the specific entropy satisfies the inequality SE≤2πR\frac{S}{E} \leq 2 \pi R, where RR stands for the radius of the smallest sphere that circumscribes the system. The validity of the Bekenstein bound on the specific entropy in the asymptotically free side of the Euclidean (λ ϕ 4)d(\lambda\,\phi^{\,4})_{d} self-interacting scalar field theory is investigated. We consider the system in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature β −1\beta^{\,-1} and defined in a compact spatial region without boundaries. Using the effective potential, we presented an exhaustive study of the thermodynamic of the model. For low and high temperatures the system presents a condensate. We obtain also the renormalized mean energy EE and entropy SS for the system. With these quantities, we shown in which situations the specific entropy satisfies the quantum bound

    Controlled coupling of counterpropagating whispering-gallery modes by a single Rayleigh scatterer: a classical problem in a quantum optical light

    We present experiments where a single subwavelength scatterer is used to examine and control the back-scattering induced coupling between counterpropagating high-Q modes of a microsphere resonator. Our measurements reveal the standing wave character of the resulting symmetric and antisymmetric eigenmodes, their unbalanced intensity distributions, and the coherent nature of their coupling. We discuss our findings and the underlying classical physics in the framework common to quantum optics and provide a particularly intuitive explanation of the central processes.Comment: accepted for publication in Pysical Review Letter

    Topological energy barrier for skyrmion lattice formation in MnSi

    We report the direct measurement of the topological skyrmion energy barrier through a hysteresis of the skyrmion lattice in the chiral magnet MnSi. Measurements were made using small-angle neutron scattering with a custom-built resistive coil to allow for high-precision minor hysteresis loops. The experimental data was analyzed using an adapted Preisach model to quantify the energy barrier for skyrmion formation and corroborated by the minimum-energy path analysis based on atomistic spin simulations. We reveal that the skyrmion lattice in MnSi forms from the conical phase progressively in small domains, each of which consisting of hundreds of skyrmions, and with an activation barrier of several eV.Comment: Final accepted versio
