    Can corruption erode confidence in political institutions smong European countries? comparing the effects of different measures of perceived corruption

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of corruption on institutional confidence through testing alternative perceptions-based indexes of corruption. Scholars who have investigated this topic have often employed only indicators of corruption based on experts\u2019 surveys. In this article we also consider a new index of corruption developed aggregating citizens\u2019 perceptions. The first part of the paper explores the levels of corruption perceived by the citizens of EU member states, stressing the differences with the experts\u2019 opinions. The second part tests, through a multivariate analysis, the impact of citizens\u2019 and experts\u2019 perceptions-based indexes of corruption on institutional confidence. The main results show that experts and citizens tend to express similar opinions on the extent of corruption in EU member states though, especially in some countries, these actors present some noticeable differences. Nevertheless, irrespective of the indexes used, more corrupt countries are characterized by lower levels of confidence in parliament and government. This relationship holds even controlling for the presence of reverse causality between corruption and confidence

    Plasma p-Cresol Lowering Effect of Sevelamer in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: Evidence from a Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

    p-Cresol is a by-product of the metabolism of aromatic aminoacid operated by resident intestinal bacteria. In patients with chronic kidney disease, the accumulation of p-cresol and of its metabolite p-cresyl-sulphate, that represents more than 95% of circulating p-cresol, causes endothelial dysfunction and ultimately increases the cardiovascular risk of these patients. Therapeutic strategies able to reduce plasma p-cresol levels are highly demanded but unfortunately not available yet. Because it has been reported that the phosphate binder sevelamer also sequesters p-cresol in vitro we hypothesized that it could do so also in peritoneal dialysis patients. To explore this hypothesis we measured total cresol plasma concentrations in 57 patients with end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis patients, 29 receiving sevelamer for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia and 28 patients not assuming this drug. Among the patients not assuming sevelamer, 16 were treated with lanthanum whereas the remaining 12 received no drug because they were not hyperphosphatemic. When we compared total p-cresol plasma concentrations in these different groups of patients, we, we found that plasma p-cresol levels were significantly lower in patients receiving sevelamer than in subjects receiving lanthanum or no drug. Patients assuming sevelamer had also lower high sensitivity C-reactive protein serum concentrations compared to patients not assuming this drug. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Conversely, no difference either in residual glomerular filtration rate, total weekly dialysis dose or serum phosphate levels were observed among the different groups. These results suggest that sevelamer could be an effective strategy to lower p-cresol circulating levels in peritoneal dialysis patients in which it could also favorably affect the cardiovascular risk because of its anti-inflammatory effect

    Detection of Provasopressin in Invasive and Non-invasive (DCIS) Human Breast Cancer Using a Monoclonal Antibody Directed Against the C-terminus (MAG1)

    The provasopressin protein (proAVP) is expressed by invasive breast cancer and non-invasive breast cancer, or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Here we demonstrate the ability of the monoclonal antibody MAG1 directed against the C-terminal end of proAVP to identify proAVP in all cases examined of human invasive cancer and DCIS (35 and 26, respectively). Tissues were chosen to represent a relevant variation in tumor type, grade, patient age, and menopausal status. By comparison, there was 65% positive staining for estrogen receptor, 61% for progesterone receptor, 67% for nuclear p53, and 39% for c-Erb-B2 with the invasive breast cancer sections. Reaction with the normal tissue types examined (67) was restricted to the vasopressinergic magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamus, where provasopressin is normally produced, and the posterior pituitary, where these neurons terminate. The breast epithelial tissue sections on the tissue microarray did not react with MAG1. Previously, we demonstrated that polyclonal antibodies to proAVP detected that protein in all breast cancer samples examined, but there was no reaction with breast tissue containing fibrocystic disease. The results presented here not only expand upon those earlier results, but they also demonstrate the specificity and effectiveness of what may be considered a more clinically-relevant agent. Thus, proAVP appears to be an attractive target for the detection of invasive breast cancer and DCIS, and these results suggest that MAG1 may be a beneficial tool for use in the development of such strategies

    Plant cover and management practices as drivers of soil quality

    Human activities intensively modify soil properties and quality according to land-use and management practices. In Mediterranean areas, pollution and fires may directly alter some soil abiotic properties as well as the steady-state condition of soil microbiota. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the chemical and biological characteristics of two kinds of soil, Arenosols and Andosols, of a natural reserve and an urban park respectively, were affected by the same or different plant covers (trees and grasses). At each site, five sub-samples of surface soils (0–10 cm) were collected under maquis (trees) and gap of grasses. The soils were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters (organic matter and water contents, pH, C, N, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb concentrations) and biological parameters (microbial and fungal biomass, respiration, metabolic quotient and coefficient of endogenous mineralization). The soil quality was evaluated through an integrated index, calculated taken into account all the investigated parameters. The results highlighted that soils under trees inside the urban park, with the highest amount of organic matter, showed higher microbial biomass and activity as compared to soils under grasses. The high concentration of Cu and Pb in these latter soils inhibited the microbial biomass and activity that were not exclusively affected by litter quality. Soil quality would seem to be strongly affected by the pedogenetic derivation and the management practices more than plant covers

    Preliminary Feasibility Study of a Water Space Reactor with an Innovative Reactivity Control System

    Power limitation represents a major issue within space applications aimed to human settlements on solar system planets. Among these planets, Mars is considered the most attractive because of its nearness to the Earth and the probable presence of minerals which can be used by the settlers to live off the land. In this frame, small size nuclear power plants can be an interesting solution to overcome the energy supply problem. This paper presents a preliminary feasibility study of a 100 kWe self-pressurized water space reactor, with the aim to design a system characterized by compactness, intrinsic safety and simplicity of the main reactor control components. To this end an innovative reactivity control system, based on the control of the primary coolant mass flow rate, was adopted. The introduction of this system in the reactor design required a comprehensive core neutronics analysis in order to properly quantify the effect of the coolant on the reactor behaviour also as a function of the fuel burn-up. Here only the main results of this analysis, concerning neutron flux profiles and multiplication factors, are discussed. Moreover preliminary results on long term reactivity control are presented, showing the possibility to operate the reactor for as long as 7 years with no need of human intervention

    LeviSense: A platform for the multisensory integration in levitating food and insights into its effect on flavour perception

    Eating is one of the most multisensory experiences in everyday life. All of our five senses (i.e. taste, smell, vision, hearing and touch) are involved, even if we are not aware of it. However, while multisensory integration has been well studied in psychology, there is not a single platform for testing systematically the effects of different stimuli. This lack of platform results in unresolved design challenges for the design of taste-based immersive experiences. Here, we present LeviSense: the first system designed for multisensory integration in gustatory experiences based on levitated food. Our system enables the systematic exploration of different sensory effects on eating experiences. It also opens up new opportunities for other professionals (e.g., molecular gastronomy chefs) looking for innovative taste-delivery platforms. We describe the design process behind LeviSense and conduct two experiments to test a subset of the crossmodal combinations (i.e., taste and vision, taste and smell). Our results show how different lighting and smell conditions affect the perceived taste intensity, pleasantness, and satisfaction. We discuss how LeviSense creates a new technical, creative, and expressive possibilities in a series of emerging design spaces within Human-Food Interaction
