Investigation of volcanic ash based geopolymers as potential building materials

Volcanic ash powders from Etna (Italy) and Cameroon were used as the principal source of aluminosilicate to produce geopolymers with the potential for making building products. The volcanic ash was ball milled and reacted with concentrated alkaline solutions for polymerisation and subsequent curing at 75-400 °C for 12-48 h. It was found that the gel was more viscous than a similar gel formed from metakaolin. Geopolymers made from both ashes had bulk densities of 1.7-2.0 g/cm3 and water absorption values of 20-25 %. Their compressive strength values were 25-35 MPa and the bi-axial four-point flexura! strength values ranged from 14-20 MPa. These values increased by 20 % when cured for 21 d after 90 d storage. It was also found that by curing at 200-400 °C the mechanical properties increased. Scanning electron micrographs showed that with thermal curing microcrystalline phases were present along with undissolved crystalline phases. These phases remained bound to the matrix and acted as a filler for strengthening the materials. The Ca, Mg and Fe present as impurities in the volcanic ash formed some of these crystalline phases and did not form any deleterious hydroxide or carbonate phases

    Superconducting and normal-state interlayer-exchange-coupling in La0.67_{0.67}Sr0.33_{0.33}MnO3{3}-YBa2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7−La_{7}-La_{0.67}SrSr_{0.33}MnO MnO{3}$ epitaxial trilayers

The issue of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers with superconducting (SC) spacer is addressed in La0.67_{0.67}Sr0.33_{0.33}MnO3_{3} (LSMO) - YBa2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7_{7} (YBCO) - La0.67_{0.67}Sr0.33_{0.33}MnO3_{3} (LSMO) epitaxial trilayers through resistivity, ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements. The ferromagnetic (FM) LSMO layers possessing in-plane magnetization suppress the critical temperature (Tc)_{c}) of the c-axis oriented YBCO thin film spacer. The superconducting order, however, survives even in very thin layers (thickness dY∼_{Y} \sim 50 {\AA}, ∼\sim 4 unit cells) at T << 25 K. A predominantly antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling between the moments of the LSMO layers at fields << 200 Oe is seen in the normal as well as the superconducting states of the YBCO spacer. The exchange energy J1_{1} (∼\sim 0.08 erg/cm2^{2} at 150 K for dY_{Y} = 75 {\AA}) grows on cooling down to Tc_{c}, followed by truncation of this growth on entering the superconducting state. The coupling energy J1_{1} at a fixed temperature drops exponentially with the thickness of the YBCO layer. The temperature and dY_{Y} dependencies of this primarily non-oscillatory J1_{1} are consistent with the coupling theories for systems in which transport is controlled by tunneling. The truncation of the monotonic T dependence of J1_{1} below Tc_{c} suggests inhibition of single electron tunneling across the CuO2_{2} planes as the in-plane gap parameter acquires a non-zero value.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The objective of this study was to select common bean parents and populations aiming to obtain elite lines resistant to WM by estimating general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for WM severity in three field nurseries carried out in Brazil

Common bean white mold resistance sources identified by greenhouse screening in Brazil.

    Get PDF
The main goal of the present work was to evaluate the reaction of 39 common bean lines to white mold in a greenhouse screening. These bean genotypes include Brazilian cultivars and advanced lines from different market classes, in addition to resistance sources previously reported by CIAT (Cali, Colombia). The effective identification of resistance sources and superior genotypes is a basic and continuous step of breeding efforts aiming to develop/select resistant cultivars to be used in the integrated control of white mold

Controlled Dynamics of Interfaces in a Vibrated Granular Layer

We present experimental study of a topological excitation, {\it interface}, in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. We show that these interfaces, separating regions of granular material oscillation with opposite phases, can be shifted and controlled by a very small amount of an additional subharmonic signal, mixed with the harmonic driving signal. The speed and the direction of interface motion depends sensitively on the phase and the amplitude of the subharmonic driving.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, RevTe

Autonomous surveillance robots: a decision-making framework for networked multiagent systems

This article proposes an architecture for an intelligent surveillance system, where the aim is to mitigate the burden on humans in conventional surveillance systems by incorporating intelligent interfaces, computer vision, and autonomous mobile robots. Central to the intelligent surveillance system is the application of research into planning and decision making in this novel context. In this article, we describe the robot surveillance decision problem and explain how the integration of components in our system supports fully automated decision making. Several concrete scenarios deployed in real surveillance environments exemplify both the flexibility of our system to experiment with different representations and algorithms and the portability of our system into a variety of problem contexts. Moreover, these scenarios demonstrate how planning enables robots to effectively balance surveillance objectives, autonomously performing the job of human patrols and responders. This work was partially supported by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), through strategic funding for Institute for Systems and Robotics/Laboratory for Robotics and Engineering Systems (ISR/LARSyS) under grant PEst-OE/EEI/LA0021/2013 and through the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program under grant CMU-PT/SIA/0023/2009.
