This paper studies the impact of legalizing abortion in Portugal on fertility and on maternal-infant health indicators, namely on low birth weight (LBW). It used individuallevel data on all pregnancies in Portugal from 2008 to 2014. It retrieved the socio-economic determinants of abortion in Portugal to find that young women, educated, employed, working in low skilled jobs, single, with previous children, without easy access to abortion services and living in conservative regions are more prone to abort. It also found that abortion induces positive selection effects regarding LBWand that it caused a reduction in Portuguese fertility

CEDH - a lifelong learning program to improve hotel managers paths

Due to the growth of the industry, hospitality professionals, and most particularly hotel managers, are increasingly being challenged to develop new skills and adapt to operational challenges, new trends of services, facing the ever-changing labour market, requiring them to be more flexible, creative, resilient and focused on recovery (the latter having become paramount in the post-COVID era). Following the end of regulated access to the profession of Hotel Manager, in 2013, the Portuguese Hotel Managers Association (ADHP), created a short specialization course in Hotel Management (CEDH), to contribute to the valorisation of the function of Hotel Director and promote lifelong learning (LLL). By combining academic expertise (through the involvement of experts and higher education professors) and practical know-how (through the participation of highly skilled and experienced professionals), CEDH aims to improve lifelong learning within the scope of Portuguese hospitality. Framed by a literature review, the data was collected through a survey with closed and open questions, aiming to identify: i) overall strengths and weaknesses; ii) suggestions for improvement; and iii) perceived impact in participants career path. In addition to describing the rationale behind the program and its implementation, this paper will address the affordances and potential of lifelong learning in hospitality education, based on participants’ initial expectations and final perceptions. It is expected to further advance recent research in LLL practices in hospitality education, as well as provide a plan of action to be reflected on the program’s next editions, as well as on other similar initiatives and projects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From Julius Caesar Scaliger to Luís da Cruz, S.J., with reference to the Council of Trent

The experience of the discoveries has helped to shape the concept of "humanitas", in its universal propensity, this genesis would be based on the reading of the classics —the exemplary of the faith on the classical world though Silvio Piccolomini will add the reading of the Fathers of the Church, the Old Testament, the Gospels and contemporary authors like Leonardo Bruni. Through the "studium", the man reached its full development, up into a higher grade of "virtus", performing one of the most characteristic values of the Romans, which origin is very similar to the Greek "aretê". This Greco-Latinthought together with the doctrine of the Church have inspired the great docket of humanist pedagogy, crystallized in the Ratio Studiorum (1586, Father Acquaviva) of the Society of Jesus, whose foundation was due to the theologian Paiva de Andrade. The A. shall establish its attention on poetic conceptions of Caesar Scaliger, highlighting an approach to rhetoric that, in harmonious symbiosis, leads us to reach the ultimate perfection of human language, to the service in the paradigm of "vir bonus dicendi peritus", in the context of a real program ethical-political to the renovation of society.

The Macroeconomic Determinants of Cross Border Mergers and Acquisitions and Greenfield Investments

    Get PDF
When a company decides to invest abroad, it can do it through the establishment of a new firm (greenfield investment) or by the purchase of an already existing firm. Although there is a vast empirical literature on the macroeconomic determinants of aggregate FDI, there are just a few studies examining the location-specific determinants of each entry mode. The aim of this study is to extend the previous work by Globerman and Shapiro (2005) through the analysis of panel data of 53 countries over the period 1996-2006, in order to identify the potential location-specific determinants of both M&A and greenfields. We have found evidence that there is a group of mode-encompassing variables which are common to all entry modes (such as economy’s size, openness, governance and human development index) and mode-specific variables. Investor’s protection and cultural variables seem to play an important role in the explanation of M&A and greenfields, respectively.Foreign Direct Investment, Cross Border Mergers and Acquisitions, Greenfield Investments

Internships and Erasmus mobility programs as a platform to employability: The perception of hospitality management undergraduate

    Get PDF
These transversal skills promoted in individuals through internships and Erasmus mobility are nowadays considered a relevant issue in terms of employability but are still not deeply researched by scientific research in Portugal, concerning the specific case of professional activities within Hospitality Management. We revise these concepts and contexts, and also their interrelations and importance, especially for the Hospitality Management education and practices. Additionally, the present study aims to expose and discuss the points of view of a group of undergraduate students about: i) internships and Erasmus mobility programs ii) their perception of the importance of those contexts for their employability. So, with an exploratory and a quantitative methodology, this study presents the surveyed students characterisation and explores some important aspects of their internships and mobility experiences, and also their employability expectations generated by those experiences. Besides the presentation of the main results of the ongoing survey we compare the results about the mobility experiences and the associated perception of employability with some of the results presented in The Erasmus Impact Study [1] which is a large and recent study made at a European level. Finally, we reflect about the study limitations and the main conclusions extracted from the study. We also underline some possible implications of this work and research issues to deepen in the future

Making their own weather? Estimating employer labour-market power and its wage effects

    Get PDF
The subdued wage growth observed in many countries has spurred interest in monopsony views of regional labour markets. This study measures the extent and robustness of employer power and its wage implications exploiting comprehensive matched employer-employee data. We find average (employment-weighted) Herfindhal indices of 800 to 1,100, stable over the 1986-2019 period covered, and that typically less than 9% of workers are exposed to concentration levels thought to raise market power concerns. When controlling for both worker and firm heterogeneity and instrumenting for concentration, we find that wages are negatively affected by employer concentration, with elasticities of around -1.4%. We also find that several methodological choices can change significantly both the measurement of concentration and its wage effects.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

Over the past years, Revenue Management has been used in various sectors, starting in the airlines, passing through the hotel and restaurant sectors, with a focus on the creation and maximization of revenue. In this sense, Restaurant Revenue Management becomes a useful tool for incomes, making establishments more competitive and contributing to business growth and sustainability in catering and restaurants context. The main objective of this study is to research the development and application of Restaurant Revenue Management, through the study of its systems and strategies, tounderstand how restaurant and catering establishments can optimize revenue through the creation and implementation of RRM systems. This research begins with a literature review where we aim to understand the principles and characteristics of Restaurant Revenue Management as a whole, to know the RRM strategies and how to apply them in the hospitality and catering sector. The methodology chosen was quantitative, where questionnaires were prepared and distributed to hotels and restaurants in Portugal. The results demonstrate that major part of the respondents is not familiar with the concept of Restaurant Revenue Management. Most respondents believe that the application of the RRM concept is important for the company's results and for those who are familiar with the concept, they consider that it allows the ideal customer to be defined based on their characteristics and enables decisions to be taken based on knowledge, creating a structure of fixed and variable costs. Purpose: Thus, the general and specific research objectives inherent to the study are: To assess how Restaurant Revenue Management is applied in Portugal in the restaurant and hotel contexts. To recognize what are its characteristics and practices. To understand how Restaurant Revenue Management influences revenues. To realize the advantages and disadvantages identified by the application of restaurant revenue management. Methodology: This research focuses on a quantitative methodology, using the questionnaire as a data collection tool. A deductive research approach was used in the scientific research process. The technical procedure used in the investigation phase was bibliographic research, having been collected information in several scientific articles and books on the subject. On a first moment, the collection of relevant documents for the research was made. The script was validated by six academic professionals and five professionals from the sector. After validation, an online questionnaire was conducted using the Google Forms platform. To achieve the maximum possible number of answers, the distribution channel used, to collect the results, was the e- mail. An initial telephone contact was made to confirm availability to answer the questionnaire. After this contact, the questionnaire was sent via e-mail. The questionnaires were conducted in Portuguese, as the study was only intended for entities located in Portugal. During the investigation, 880 questionnaires were sent out and 131 responses were received all completed, in a period between June and August. The instrument used to analyze and process the data collected was Excel. Results: The concept of Restaurant Revenue Management generally is not known among F&B departments, as demonstrated in the answers collected during the distribution of the questionnaire, in which 58.8% do not know the concept and only 41.2% of the respondents are familiar with the subject. Those who know and apply the concept of RRM consider the application of the concept and its respective impact important and crucial for the business. In the answers to the questionnaire about 57.4% consider its application important, while 24.1% considers it very important and 14.8% extremely important. Only 3.7% states that the RRM is not very important. Of the 131 respondents, only 41.2% are familiar with the concept of Restaurant Revenue Management, making a total of 54 responses. Originality: This is original research with the authors perspective constructed based in arguments from other research work to back up the investigation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Invited review: Models for the optimization of regional wastewater treatment systems

    Get PDF
European Journal of Operational Research, nº 73 (1994)The problem of the optimization of regional wastewater systems may be generally formulated as follows: to define the transport and treatment system, in a region or water basin, which assure compliance with given pollution control criteria, with minimum cost. In addition, one may try to satisfy other objectives, such as minimum environmental impact, better effluent reuse or adequate phasing. From the optimization point of view, the two main problems that render the solution difficult are the dimensionality and the concavity of cost functions. The matter has been dealt with by many authors, who have produced varied techniques to try to solve this problem. This paper begins with a brief review of the work of those authors who have produced models specifically designed to study the problem. Then, solution strategies are discussed concerning three major items: definition of the objective function and constraints, optimization method and practical aplicability of the models. The paper concludes with the discussion of topics for future research
