ABSTRACT This paper proposes an analysis of the major events that occurred during the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 in Somalia, where U.S. military forces faced Somali militias in a battle that changed not only US involvement in stabilization missions in the world but also modified the concept of the United Nation’s humanitarian missions as a whole. Starting from the cinematic representation presented in the film Black Hawk Down, this essay analysis the nature of conflict on the international scene, which viewed from a historical perspective, experienced a number of modifications in its conceptual characteristics: war between the states gave way to war within states in some conflicts in the world. This paper presents a relationship between the concepts that connect the wars to humanitarian interventions, specifically analysing the peacekeeping mission in Somalia with a focus on the background and consequences of the Battle of Mogadishu of 1993 based on the cinematic representation. <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The majority of Marfan syndrome (MFS) cases is caused by mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene (<it>FBN1</it>), mapped to chromosome 15q21.1. Only few reports on deletions including the whole <it>FBN1 </it>gene, detected by molecular cytogenetic techniques, were found in literature.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report here on a female patient with clinical symptoms of the MFS spectrum plus craniostenosis, hypothyroidism and intellectual deficiency who presents a 1.9 Mb deletion, including the <it>FBN1 </it>gene and a complex rearrangement with eight breakpoints involving chromosomes 6, 12 and 15.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This is the first report of MFS with a complex chromosome rearrangement involving a deletion of <it>FBN1 </it>and contiguous genes. In addition to the typical clinical findings of the Marfan syndrome due to <it>FBN1 </it>gene haploinsufficiency, the patient presents features which may be due to the other gene deletions and possibly to the complex chromosome rearrangement.</p

Trypanosoma cruzi Immune Response Modulation Decreases Microbiota in Rhodnius prolixus Gut and Is Crucial for Parasite Survival and Development

Trypanosoma cruzi in order to complete its development in the digestive tract of Rhodnius prolixus needs to overcome the immune reactions and microbiota trypanolytic activity of the gut. We demonstrate that in R. prolixus following infection with epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi clone Dm28c and, in comparison with uninfected control insects, the midgut contained (i) fewer bacteria, (ii) higher parasite numbers, and (iii) reduced nitrite and nitrate production and increased phenoloxidase and antibacterial activities. In addition, in insects pre-treated with antibiotic and then infected with Dm28c, there were also reduced bacteria numbers and a higher parasite load compared with insects solely infected with parasites. Furthermore, and in contrast to insects infected with Dm28c, infection with T. cruzi Y strain resulted in a slight decreased numbers of gut bacteria but not sufficient to mediate a successful parasite infection. We conclude that infection of R. prolixus with the T. cruzi Dm28c clone modifies the host gut immune responses to decrease the microbiota population and these changes are crucial for the parasite development in the insect gut

Use of gold nanoparticles functionalization experiment was conducted in a biotechnology summer course at UFOP as a model for the introduction of the laboratory practice in nanotechnology for postgraduate courses in the areas of chemistry and biotechnology. The gold nanorods were synthesized by the seed method and then, functionalized with anti-IL-6 antibodies using the reagents EDAC/NHS and polyethyleneimine (PEI). This nanocompound was tested against the binding with the specific antigen (IL-6) and changes in the longitudinal plasmon absorption spectrum showed the coupling efficiency, which was also verified by the decrease in zeta potential. The experiment was satisfactory, with a positive feedback from participants, and could be implemented in nanotechnology practical classes from postgraduate courses, as a way for improve education in the emergent area of nanobiotechnology

Sharing clinical research data in the United States under the health insurance portability and accountability act and the privacy rule

Sharing of final research data from clinical research is an essential part of the scientific method. The U.S. National Institutes of Health require some grant applications to include plans for sharing final research data, which it defines as the factual materials necessary to document, support, and validate research findings. In the U.S., however, the Privacy Rule adopted under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act impedes the sharing of final research data. In most situations, final research data may be shared only where all information that could possibly be used to identify the subject has been deleted, or where the subject has given authorization for specific research, or an Institutional Review Board has granted a waiver
