This comment explores the various steps being taken to stop LGBT bullying in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Section I discusses why it is important to address the issue of bullying and the deep impact that bullying can have on students\u27 lives. Section II provides a comprehensive look at how other states have addressed bullying and provided enumerated protection for LGBT students. This section also examines federal laws that have been used in bullying claims in the absence of federal anti-bullying legislation. Section III focuses specifically on Virginia anti-bullying legislation and the steps that Virginia has taken to combat LGBT bullying in particular. This section will focus on the discontinuity among school districts in Virginia regarding LGBT anti-bullying legislation. This section argues that Virginia needs to reevaluate its anti-bullying legislation and enumerate LGBT students as a targeted group instead of leaving the decision to enumerate LGBT students up to each individual school district. Section IV argues why enumerating sexual orientation in Virginia\u27s antibullying law would be beneficial to LGBT students. Section V addresses additional steps that Virginia can take to combat LGBT bullying. It also highlights the positive steps Virginia has already taken to help LGBT students

Planning an employee Spanish training program at the community college level

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to research the process of planning and creating an employee Spanish training program. The researcher determined employees\u27 previous knowledge of the language and culture as well as training preferences utilizing two surveys (n = 120) and a personal interview (n = 15). Surveys were statistically analyzed using SPSS software to determine frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations and the interviews were analyzed using a content analysis procedure. Research on adult learning theories, program planning theories and exemplary Spanish training programs complemented the quantitative and qualitative data collected. The study revealed that CCC employees had marginal knowledge of the language and culture but held positive attitudes toward the training and Hispanics in general. Employees also preferred multiple methods of instruction, including an interactive classroom approach coupled with computer-based reinforcement. Training preferences included weekly sessions of 1.5 hours with ample opportunity for transfer of learning. Suggestions for creating an effective Spanish training program based on employees\u27 backgrounds and preferences, as well as adult learning theory and program planning theory are explained

What Factors Contribute to or Inhibit Publishing Among Medical Librarians

OBJECTIVE: To discover what factors influence librarians to publish or present their work. The study aims to determine what type of publications and presentations are most prevalent, what external factors impact the decision to publish or present, what internal factors affect the decision, and why one chooses to do one rather than the other or both.https://digitalcommons.pcom.edu/posters/1000/thumbnail.jp

Attachment Security Among Mothers and Their Young Children Living in Poverty: Associations with Maternal, Child, and Contextual Characteristics

    Get PDF
In order to extend previous research and inform intervention programs, the goal of the present study was to further understand variability in mother-child attachment security among high-risk families living in poverty. Mothers (65% Hispanic) and their young children who were in a home visitor program (n 74) to connect families with basic services or who were on the waiting list (n 27) for the program were visited at home. Mothers completed the Attachment Q-Set, the Parenting Stress Index, and a questionnaire on beliefs about the role of play in children’s development and parenting efficacy in either Spanish or English. Observers assessed maternal sensitivity and the presence of appropriate play materials. Results indicated that maternal, child, and contextual variables were significantly associated with attachment security. Furthermore, greater cumulative assets were related to more secure attachment relationships

Can Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Be Used Accurately to Compare Older and Younger Populations? A Mini Literature Review

    Get PDF
A wealth of research has investigated the aging brain using blood oxygenation level dependent functional MRI [Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)]. However, many studies do not consider the aging of the cerebrovascular system, which can influence the BOLD signal independently from neural activity, limiting what can be inferred when comparing age groups. Here, we discuss the ways in which the aging neurovascular system can impact BOLD fMRI, the consequences for age-group comparisons and possible strategies for mitigation. While BOLD fMRI is a valuable tool in this context, this review highlights the importance of consideration of vascular confounds

Implementing TK20 Assessment System: A Collaborative Effort

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to share results of a collaborative effort introducing the TK20 assessment system in the Department of Education and Human Development at the College of Brockport, State University of New York. The authors will define and explain the TK 20 assessment system and its relationship to accreditation and standards. We will discuss the process of pilot testing and implementing this assessment system. We will also describe the interdisciplinary efforts for effective collaboration into a college wide assessment system. We will share the impact of such a system on students using a firsthand voice. Readers can take away ideas for similar implementation efforts and assignments

Impact of an Opioid Harm Reduction Consortium: Emergency and Justice Engagement

Utah State University Extension engaged first responders and law enforcement officials in a consortium to identify local needs related to opioid use disorder (OUD). To this end, the Tooele Opioid Response Network (TORN) conducted three first-responder harm reduction summits to meet local overdose prevention needs. The initiative trained over 200 personnel, which resulted in an 87.5% increase in knowledge related to harm reduction. TORN also facilitated the acquisition of $90,000 in funding for jail-based opioid medication and the disbursement of 400 naloxone kits and training to incarcerated persons at discharge
