Two cases of sternal osteomyelitis due to Mycobacterium africanum: a casual or causal association

Abstract The sternal localization of bone and joint tuberculosis (TB) is rare, has an insidious clinical presentation, and usually affects young adults living in endemic areas. Mycobacterium africanum causes a relevant proportion of human TB in West Africa and in migrants from endemic countries . Here, we report two cases of sternal osteomyelitis due to M. africanum in migrants

Large area SiC-UV phothodiode for spectroscopy portable system

In this work, we present the extensive characterization of large area Silicon Carbide based UV sensors candidate for outdoors spectroscopic applications of gas or liquid. The proposed SiC Schottky devices exhibit dark current density of 0.12 nA/cm2 @ 15 V, a 0.12 A/W responsivity @ 300 nm, optimal visible blindness and switching time of ~ 190 ns. Effects of temperature on the sensor performance, of crucial interest for outdoors applications, are also examined in the range from -20 °C to 90 °C.Published2931 - 29367TM. Comprehensive sexuality education is an important means of promoting sexual well-being amongst young people and is key to preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, sexuality education is not currently included in the formal curriculum in Italian schools. The aim of this study was to develop an inventory of schoolbased sexuality education (SBSE) activities carried out by external providers and implemented in Italy from 2016 to 2020. A desk review and survey were carried out. In the desk review online documents on STI prevention were analysed. The survey investigated the providers, objectives, content and methods used to implement SBSE activities in secondary schools. Findings revealed a highly heterogeneous situation in terms of geographical coverage, service providers, objectives and evaluation. Some SBSE activities were classified as adopting a comprehensive approach to sexuality education, while the majority focused on STI prevention, and many were single-session activities. Although most activities were said to have been evaluated no results were available. The data showed that SBSE is not systematically and equally delivered across Italy. Action is needed to provide young people with evidence-based, age-appropriate and accurate education about sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing

OXIDE DISPERSION STRENGTHENED STEELS AS CANDIDATE STRUCTURAL MATERIALS FOR NUCLEAR AGGRESSIVE ENVIRONMENTS

In this paper, a description of the past and present research activities for the development of the Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened (ODS) Steels will be carried out, showing why ODS steels are considered among the best candidate structural materials in very aggressive nuclear environments: it can find application as material for the cladding in nuclear fast breeding reactors, or in the blanket/first wall of the fusion reactor as well. General information about the anisotropy of its microstructure, its tensile and creep properties, how they result affected by, and also its esistance to irradiation will be provided

A prospective study was carried out to compare the value of ultrasound examination with conventional management in patients presenting with emergency surgical problems. During an 4 years period the authors followed 301 patients referred to the Ist Institute of Surgery of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". After immediate clinical evaluation one or more US examinations were performed in each patient following a standard protocol of study. Abdominal emergencies were the most frequent conditions, found in 75% of the cases and the acute abdomen due to trauma in 17.6% of the cases. The overall sensibility, specificity and accuracy of clinical examinations and US examinations were respectively of 88%, 33%, 70% and 95%, 94%, 95%. In 38 patients (12.7%), a diagnosis was made up by sonographic examination which had not been clinically expected (group A). The principal condition in this group was gynaecological pathology, found in 17 patients. In 161 patients (53.3%) sonography confirmed the first diagnosis clinically suspected (group B) and in 23 cases the second or third differential diagnosis (group D). Sonography made no contribution to the diagnosis in 77 cases (25,5%) and only in 2 cases was considered misleading. The result of this study demonstrate the usefulness of emergency ultrasonography in gynecological, gall bladder, pancreatic and vascular diseases. Moreover sonography must be considered the principal diagnostic tool in patients with trauma. In order to recognize gynecological diseases which can simulate appendicitis US examination must be considered necessary in young female patients. When appendicitis is suspected US is useful in children and in older patients too

Improved sustainability of railway systems: The tesys rail project

    No full text
While an important part of the total carbon dioxide emission is still caused by transport systems, the impact of railway systems is significantly lower with respect to the other ground and air concurrent systems. However, the current development trends will produce a significant improvement of the efficiency of cars and planes, thus reducing the sustainability advantages of railway systems. This paper presents research work, based on the activities of the TESYS Rail Project, deals with the optimization of railway energy consumptions in order to increase the efficiency of the system. From the simulation of railway systems, the aim of the activity is to investigate how the use of energy storage devices can really improve efficiency in different operating scenarios, and involving different train typologies. A further goal of the activity is the development of integrated design, simulation and optimization tools and the generation of a code that can be integrated in real time applications. Finally, the model proposed in this paper has been validated with a set of experimental results provided by an industrial partner
