As is well-known, the Hittite verbal form ending in -(u)wan, labeled now for more than half a century the “supine”, occurs only in a construction with either dai- ‘to put’ or tiya- ‘to step’ that expresses the notion ‘begin/undertake to do X’: (1) KBo 5.8 iii 3-5 (CTH 61, Annals of MurĆĄili; NH)namma=ĆĄmaĆĄ=kan ÉRIN.MEĆ  iĆĄáž«iáž«áž«un nu=mu ÉRIN.MEĆ  piĆĄkewan dāir n=at=mu laáž«áž«i kattan paiĆĄgauwan tiyēr “Then I imposed (a commitment for) troops on them, and they began to give me troops and began to go o..

Hittitology today: Studies on Hittite and Neo-Hittite Anatolia in Honor of Emmanuel Laroche’s 100th Birthday

As a scholar who was fascinated both by Indo-European Linguistics and Ancient Near Eastern and Classical Studies, he had a durable impact on Hittitology through his numerous contributions. His publications dealt with History of Near Eastern Religions, Cuneiform Philology, and Hittite, Luwian, and Hurrian grammar, among many other topics. This conference was organized in honor of his 100th birthday. Its aim was to discuss the recent developments in Hittitology, the ones to whom Emmanuel Laroche contributed and the ones which occurred after his time. The following themes are dealt with in this volume: Anatolian Linguistics, Cuneiform and Hieroglyphic Philology and Epigraphy, Religions of Bronze and Early Iron Age Anatolia, History and Historical Geography of Asia Minor, but also Near Eastern Archaeology, as Emmanuel Laroche was also very close to this discipline. Let us add to those fields Historiography which illustrates, among other things, the impact of Emmanuel Laroche’s work on today’s Hittitology

Hittite tit(ta)nu-, titti-, and Lycian stta-

Against the standard view, there are two synchronically distinct Hittite verbs titti- and tittanu-, one meaning ‘to erect, cause to stand, install (in an office)’ related to tiya- ‘to stand, step’ and another meaning ‘to place (in a horizontal position); impose’, related to dai- ‘to place, put’. The verb *tittaunderlying the first tittanu- is with Jasanoff 2010 a reshaped reflex of a PIE i-reduplicated stem *s(t)í-sth2 -, while the stem *titta- ‘to place’ and both stems titti- are pre-Hittite innovations. Contra Jasanoff, Lycian stta- ‘to stand, be erected’ is either a loanword from Greek or the cognate of HLuvian ta- ‘to stand’.253

    “Narten formations” versus “Narten roots”

Since the existence of a PIE "acrostatic" present formation with descriptive-/Ă© ablaut was first established by Narten (1968), there has been an ongoing debate regarding the status of this type of inflection in the overall PIE morphological system. Is it a lexically determined feature, by which certain roots consistently (at least typically) display ablaut one degree higher than "standard" roots in a given morphological category? Or do "Narten presents" represent merely another means of deriving present (imperfective) stems (originally with a specific Aktionsart), alongside well-known suffixes like? I will present further evidence for the latter viewpoint, thus supporting the independent conclusions in KĂŒmmel 1998

Further thoughts on Carian nominal inflection

The discovery and gratifyingly prompt and excellent publication of the Carian-Greek Bilingual of Kaunos affirmed the essential validity of what has been labeled the ‘Egyptological’ interpretation of the Carian alphabet, also referred to as the ‘Ray-SchĂŒrr-Adiego’ system, as presented in the table in Adiego. While the value of a few individual letters remains debatable or indeterminate, the Carian alphabet may be regarded as deciphered. The new bilingual also brought welcome confirmation of a ..
