On the relation between Transversal and Longitudinal Scaling in Cities
Given that a group of cities follows a scaling law connecting urban population with socio-economic or infrastructural metrics (transversal scaling), should we expect that each city would follow the same behavior over time (longitudinal scaling)? This assumption has important policy implications, although rigorous empirical tests have been so far hindered by the lack of suitable data. Here, we advance the debate by looking into the temporal evolution of the scaling laws for 5507 municipalities in Brazil. We focus on the relationship between population size and two urban variables, GDP and water network length, analyzing the time evolution of the system of cities as well as their individual trajectory. We find that longitudinal (individual) scaling exponents are city-specific, but they are distributed around an average value that approaches to the transversal scaling exponent when the data are decomposed to eliminate external factors, and when we only consider cities with a sufficiently large growth rate. Such results give support to the idea that the longitudinal dynamics is a micro-scaling version of the transversal dynamics of the entire urban system. Finally, we propose a mathematical framework that connects the microscopic level to global behavior, and, in all analyzed cases, we find good agreement between theoretical prediction and empirical evidence
Abstract: Technical and economic feasibility of strobilurin fungicides application on maize In recent years, great emphasis has been given to the use of fungicides for managing foliar diseases in corn in Brazil. This study aimed to conduct an analysis of technical and economic feasibility of application of fungicides on maize in different growing regions. Trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of fungicides on the yield of different maize cultivars at three locations: Sete Lagoas (state of Minas Gerais), Londrina (state of Paraná) and Rio Verde (state of Goiás). The effect of one and two fungicide applications on each cultivar was evaluated. For each trial, the difference in mean yield and disease severities between treated and untreated plots for each cultivars was compared. For all trials, yield response of cultivars treated with fungicides was highly inconsistent under low disease severity. A higher frequency of positive yields and economic benefit occurred when fungicide applications were made under conditions of high disease pressure. More studies are needed to better clarify the effect of strobilurin fungicides on the physiology and production of corn plants

ABSTRACT - One hundred and ninety six buffalo milk samples were analyzed from farms in the South region of Pernambuco State, Brazil. The sensibility and specificity of the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and the Modified Whiteside were studied as auxiliary methods in the diagnosis of subclinical mastitis. A relationship between the stage and the number of lactations regarding mammary infection was established. One hundred and thirty nine (70,9%) samples were positive in the microbiological exam, resulting in 76 samples of Staphylococcus spp. Fifty eight samples (42%) were classified as coagulase negative Staphylococcus. Other bacterias isolated were Bacillus spp (45/32,4%), Gram negative bacillus (25/18%), Streptococcus spp (8/6%) and Micrococcus spp (3/2,2%) in pure or mixed culture. The CMT and WM analysis showed low sensibility and specificity when compared to bacterial isolation. The number and stage of lactations did not influence on occurrence of the infection in the mammary gland of this species
