Unexpected Effect of Internal Degrees of Freedom on Transverse Phonons in Supercooled Liquids
We show experimentally that in a supercooled liquid composed of molecules
with internal degrees of freedom the internal modes contribute to the frequency
dependent shear viscosity and damping of transverse phonons, which results in
an additional broadening of the transverse Brillouin lines. Earlier, only the
effect of internal modes on the frequency dependent bulk viscosity and damping
of longitudinal phonons was observed and explained theoretically in the limit
of weak coupling of internal degrees of freedom to translational motion. A new
theory is needed to describe this new effect. We also demonstrate, that the
contributions of structural relaxation and internal processes to the width of
the Brillouin lines can be separated by measurements under high pressure
Communication and optimal hierarchical networks
We study a general and simple model for communication processes. In the
model, agents in a network (in particular, an organization) interchange
information packets following simple rules that take into account the limited
capability of the agents to deal with packets and the cost associated to the
existence of open communication channels. Due to the limitation in the
capability, the network collapses under certain conditions. We focus on when
the collapse occurs for hierarchical networks and also on the influence of the
flatness or steepness of the structure. We find that the need for hierarchy is

Theory of Coherent Time-dependent Transport in One-dimensional Multiband Semiconductor Superlattices
We present an analytical study of one-dimensional semiconductor superlattices
in external electric fields, which may be time-dependent. A number of general
results for the (quasi)energies and eigenstates are derived. An equation of
motion for the density matrix is obtained for a two-band model, and the
properties of the solutions are analyzed. An expression for the current is
obtained. Finally, Zener-tunneling in a two-band tight-binding model is
considered. The present work gives the background and an extension of the
theoretical framework underlying our recent Letter [J. Rotvig {\it et al.},
Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 74}, 1831 (1995)], where a set of numerical simulations

Second harmonic generation on incommensurate structures: The case of multiferroic MnWO4
A comprehensive analysis of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) on an
incommensurate (IC) magnetically ordered state is presented using multiferroic
MnWO4 as model compound. Two fundamentally different SHG contributions coupling
to the primary IC magnetic order or to secondary commensurate projections of
the IC state, respectively, are distinguished. Whereas the latter can be
described within the formalism of the 122 commensurate magnetic point groups
the former involves a breakdown of the conventional macroscopic symmetry
analysis because of its sensitivity to the lower symmetry of the local
environment in a crystal lattice. Our analysis thus foreshadows the fusion of
the hitherto disjunct fields of nonlinear optics and IC order in
condensed-matter systems
Time Periodic Behavior of Multiband Superlattices in Static Electric Fields
We use an analytic perturbation expansion for the two-band system of tight
binding electrons to discuss Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling within this
model. We make comparison with recent numerical results and predict
analytically the frequency of radiation expected from Zener tunneling,
