Foreign Reserves and Economic Growth: Granger Causality Analysis with Panel Data
This paper will investigate the Granger causality between foreign reserves and economic growth in twenty largest reserves-holding countries ranging from 1980 to 2008. The method of first-differencing each variable is used to estimate the panel data VAR equations for Granger causality test. The results show the foreign reserves unilaterally Granger cause economic growth only in the emerging countries. In the advanced countries, there is no Granger causal relation between foreign reserves and economic growth.
What Causes the Volatility of the Balancing Item?
This paper analyzes the impacts of timing errors, capital flows and economic openness on the behavior of the balancing item. We choose Norway, Sweden, Philippines and South Africa as sample countries where the size of the balancing item is often excess the IMF's criterion of ‘smallness'. The empirical results show that the sources of the volatility of the balancing item are different among these four countries.Balancing item, Balance of payments
Mean Reversion of Balance of Payments¡GEvidence from Sequential Trend Break Unit Root Tests
We analyze the G7 countries data set of real balance of payments series. The unit root tests with an endogenously determined break date in the trend function proposed by Zivot and Andrews (1992) is employed to characterize the balance of payments series. The empirical results show that allowing for a break in the trend function could alter the outcome of the standard unit root tests for some series.Balance of payments
Spectral functions of the Falicov-Kimball model with electronic ferroelectricity
We calculate the angular resolved photoemission spectrum of the
Falicov-Kimball model with electronic ferroelectricity where - and
-electrons have different hoppings. In mix-valence regimes, the presence of
strong scattering processes between - excitons and a hole, created by
emission of an electron, leads to the formation of pseudospin polarons and
novel electronic structures with bandwidth scaling with that of -
excitons. Especially, in the two-dimensional case, we find that flat regions
exist near the bottom of the quasiparticle band in a wide range of the - and
-level energy difference.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Deficiency of Mkrn2 causes abnormal spermiogenesis and spermiation, and impairs male fertility.
Although recent studies have shed insights on some of the potential causes of male infertility, new underlining molecular mechanisms still remain to be elucidated. Makorin-2 (Mkrn2) is an evolutionarily conserved gene whose biological functions are not fully known. We developed an Mrkn2 knockout mouse model to study the role of this gene, and found that deletion of Mkrn2 in mice led to male infertility. Mkrn2 knockout mice produced abnormal sperms characterized by low number, poor motility, and aberrant morphology. Disruption of Mkrn2 also caused failure of sperm release (spermiation failure) and misarrangement of ectoplasmic specialization (ES) in testes, thus impairing spermiogenesis and spermiation. To understand the molecular mechanism, we found that expression of Odf2, a vital protein in spermatogenesis, was significantly decreased. In addition, we found that expression levels of Odf2 were decreased in Mkrn2 knockout mice. We also found that MKRN2 was prominently expressed in the sperm of normal men, but was significantly reduced in infertile men. This result indicates that our finding is clinically relevant. The results of our study provided insights into a new mechanism of male infertility caused by the MKRN2 downregulation
