    An Exploratory Study of Lecturers' Views of Out-of-class Academic Collaboration Among Students

    This article reports an exploratory study of lecturers' perceptions of out-of-class academic collaboration (OCAC) among students at a large Singapore university. Two types of OCAC were investigated: collaboration initiated by students, e.g., groups decide on their own to meet to prepare for exams, and collaboration required by teachers, e.g., teachers assign students to do projects in groups. Data were collected via one-on-one interviews with 18 faculty members from four faculties at the university. Findings suggest that OCAC, especially of a teacher-required kind, is fairly common at the university. Faculty members' views on factors affecting the success of OCAC are discussed for the light they might shed on practices to enhance the effectiveness of OCAC

    The quantum fluctuations of an "accelerated" vacuum state, that is vacuum fluctuations in the presence of a constant electromagnetic field, can be described by the temperature \TEH. Considering \TEH for the gyromagnetic factor g=1g=1 we show that \TEH(g=1)=\THU, where \THU is the Unruh temperature experienced by an accelerated observer. We conjecture that both particle production and nonlinear field effects inherent in the Unruh accelerated observer case are described by the case g=1g=1 QED of strong fields. We present rates of particle production for g=0,1,2g=0,1,2 and show that the case g=1g=1 is experimentally distinguishable from g=0,2g=0,2. Therefore, either accelerated observers are distinguishable from accelerated vacuum or there is unexpected modification of the theoretical framework.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; expanded discussion of experimental observables, added references, version appearing in Phys Rev

    Local tree species would perform an important role in forestation, because they have more advantages than exotic species in terms of the physiological and adaptation aspects. In this article, we discussed some main factors which affect the drought resistance of trees and depict some anti-droughtcharacteristics and mechanisms of some local species. These factors include osmoregulation, antioxidant system, transpiration and the shape and structure of trees. At the same time, we also make some suggestions and discussions for the application of typical local tree species in the west-China for improving regional, national and international environmental quality

    Quasi-local energy and the choice of reference

    A quasi-local energy for Einstein's general relativity is defined by the value of the preferred boundary term in the covariant Hamiltonian formalism. The boundary term depends upon a choice of reference and a time-like displacement vector field (which can be associated with an observer) on the boundary of the region. Here we analyze the spherical symmetric cases. For the obvious analytic choice of reference based on the metric components, we find that this technique gives the same quasi-local energy values using several standard coordinate systems and yet can give different values in some other coordinate systems. For the homogeneous-isotropic cosmologies, the energy can be non-positive, and one case which is actually flat space has a negative energy. As an alternative, we introduce a way to determine the choice of both the reference and displacement by extremizing the energy. This procedure gives the same value for the energy in different coordinate systems for the Schwarzschild space, and a non-negative value for the cosmological models, with zero energy for the dynamic cosmology which is actually Minkowski space. The timelike displacement vector comes out to be the dual mean curvature vector of the two-boundary.Comment: 21 pages; revised version to appear in CQ
