Task-based learning for enhanced mastery of language.

    Get PDF
Teachers’ observations suggest that task-based learning (TBL) enhances the four language skills at a faster rate and makes teaching and learning more interactive, enjoyable and effective. The objective of this paper is to examine how TBL accelerates improvement because it requires greater involvement of the students in the learning process and students tend to feel a stronger sense of ownership as they are encouraged to take the lead in figuring out the best way to achieve the specific goals of the tasks. TBL makes it possible for students to take responsibility for a major part of the work, while enabling the lecturer to focus on providing relevant explanation and feedback. This paper describes these aspects, drawing on the prior experience of students using task-supported language activities (TSLA) in their secondary school years. The subjects of this paper are students in the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) Programme from January and April 2013 intakes who have taken English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) as a core subject. Their reflective essays provided relevant data as the basis of this research. The responses indicate that noticeable improvement in the students’ oral and written skills resulted from the TBL approach

A case study: the knowledge and awareness levels of copyright infringement among learners utilising digital technologies in Sunway College Johor Bahru

Technologies especially Web 2.0 tools and mobile devices are transforming the way education is delivered. As such higher education institutions are experiencing an emerging pedagogical trend that may cause copyright infringement. The Copyright Act 1987 was legislated to inspire continuing creative work among academicians. Hence, the knowledge and awareness of Copyright Law and its infringement becomes increasingly significant in protecting the academicians’ work. Unawareness of the law can cause students to infringe the law and it can affect academicians’ work. An initial survey was conducted on 127 first year students from all nine programmes of Sunway College Johor Bahru. The results reveal that although the respondents have a relatively high awareness level and claim to understand the infringement; their actual knowledge level is only approximately 50% of the law. Also, the knowledge and awareness levels have very little correlation with the attitude level towards the Copyright Law

Pepsi-Cola is one of the largest multinational food and beverage brand in the world. In 1902 Pepsi-Cola Company was founded in the United State. It has continuously developed during the past 118 years. Our Report is about replacing Plastic bottle to Reusable Plastic to develop and change the company product to be better. The issue of environmental pollution especially plastic pollution is becoming serious; it is damaging the ecological environment. This had triggered the attention of organization on the environment and some of them take their responsibility to work hard on sustainability a strong environmental profile

KFC or also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken is one of the most leading fast food restaurants around the world. KFC that originally from America has thrived around the world including Malaysia and Kuwait. Although it is an advanced company, it still has some sensitive internal issues that will cause problems to the company. If this problem is not carefully and wisely deal with, it will drop the company name and bring a negative impact to everyone that involved in the company. In this research, we examine the issues in an organization and KFC is the subject of our study. KFC has been in a bad mood for the past few years. Many of the customers complaint about the services and the attitudes of the employee in the restaurant. In Jan 2015, a case of brawl between KFC employees and customers was viral in social media and there also a case where KFC employees show pornographic signs to customers. This shows the attitude and the behavior of KFC employees who do not adhere to ethics and are not prudent will affect the good name of a company. Employees issues in KFC is the best topic to be discuss in this study. There lot of problem that face by KFC in term of employees such as lack of manpower in their branches. If compare from our observation, there a huge difference between the number of workers in KFC and its competitor, Mc Donald. Therefore, we can see that Mc Donald is more efficient than KFC although KFC has lower cost for their human resource

Germline breast cancer susceptibility genes, tumor characteristics, and survival.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in certain genes are known to increase breast cancer risk. We study the relevance of rare protein-truncating variants (PTVs) that may result in loss-of-function in breast cancer susceptibility genes on tumor characteristics and survival in 8852 breast cancer patients of Asian descent. METHODS: Gene panel sequencing was performed for 34 known or suspected breast cancer predisposition genes, of which nine genes (ATM, BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, BARD1, RAD51C, RAD51D, and TP53) were associated with breast cancer risk. Associations between PTV carriership in one or more genes and tumor characteristics were examined using multinomial logistic regression. Ten-year overall survival was estimated using Cox regression models in 6477 breast cancer patients after excluding older patients (≥75years) and stage 0 and IV disease. RESULTS: PTV9genes carriership (n = 690) was significantly associated (p < 0.001) with more aggressive tumor characteristics including high grade (poorly vs well-differentiated, odds ratio [95% confidence interval] 3.48 [2.35-5.17], moderately vs well-differentiated 2.33 [1.56-3.49]), as well as luminal B [HER-] and triple-negative subtypes (vs luminal A 2.15 [1.58-2.92] and 2.85 [2.17-3.73], respectively), adjusted for age at diagnosis, study, and ethnicity. Associations with grade and luminal B [HER2-] subtype remained significant after excluding BRCA1/2 carriers. PTV25genes carriership (n = 289, excluding carriers of the nine genes associated with breast cancer) was not associated with tumor characteristics. However, PTV25genes carriership, but not PTV9genes carriership, was suggested to be associated with worse 10-year overall survival (hazard ratio [CI] 1.63 [1.16-2.28]). CONCLUSIONS: PTV9genes carriership is associated with more aggressive tumors. Variants in other genes might be associated with the survival of breast cancer patients. The finding that PTV carriership is not just associated with higher breast cancer risk, but also more severe and fatal forms of the disease, suggests that genetic testing has the potential to provide additional health information and help healthy individuals make screening decisions

Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data

    Get PDF
This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples

How do the Contemporary Scholars John Barton, Gordon Wenham, and Mary Mills Use Old Testament Narratives in Forming Christian Ethics?

How should we live our lives and make wise decisions? We need to understand the contemporary and scholarly views on Christian ethics, in order to comprehend the Christian ideal of an ethical existence based on Old Testament narratives. Since Old Testament narratives have not been featured significantly in ethical discussion, further work needs to be done to examine the use of narratives as an ethical resource. This paper examines theories from John Barton, Gordon Wenham, and Mary Mills on using Old Testament narratives to form ethics. The effectiveness of these three scholars is analyzed by comparing and contrasting their models, principles, and the visions of their arguments. The three scholars are critiqued on their arguments on the narratives of Abraham, Joseph, and Daniel. A survey of previous works illustrates how scholars have applied Old Testament ethics specifically to narratives, and will serve as a foundational work for future research.Master of Theology (ThM
