Multivariate adaptive regression splines for estimating riverine constituent concentrations

    Get PDF
Regression-based methods are commonly used for riverine constituent concentration/flux estimation, which is essential for guiding water quality protection practices and environmental decision making. This paper developed a multivariate adaptive regression splines model for estimating riverine constituent concentrations (MARS-EC). The process, interpretability and flexibility of the MARS-EC modelling approach, was demonstrated for total nitrogen in the Patuxent River, a major river input to Chesapeake Bay. Model accuracy and uncertainty of the MARS-EC approach was further analysed using nitrate plus nitrite datasets from eight tributary rivers to Chesapeake Bay. Results showed that the MARS-EC approach integrated the advantages of both parametric and nonparametric regression methods, and model accuracy was demonstrated to be superior to the traditionally used ESTIMATOR model. MARS-EC is flexible and allows consideration of auxiliary variables; the variables and interactions can be selected automatically. MARS-EC does not constrain concentration-predictor curves to be constant but rather is able to identify shifts in these curves from mathematical expressions and visual graphics. The MARS-EC approach provides an effective and complementary tool along with existing approaches for estimating riverine constituent concentrations

    Acceleration and vacuum temperature

The quantum fluctuations of an "accelerated" vacuum state, that is vacuum fluctuations in the presence of a constant electromagnetic field, can be described by the temperature \TEH. Considering \TEH for the gyromagnetic factor g=1g=1 we show that \TEH(g=1)=\THU, where \THU is the Unruh temperature experienced by an accelerated observer. We conjecture that both particle production and nonlinear field effects inherent in the Unruh accelerated observer case are described by the case g=1g=1 QED of strong fields. We present rates of particle production for g=0,1,2g=0,1,2 and show that the case g=1g=1 is experimentally distinguishable from g=0,2g=0,2. Therefore, either accelerated observers are distinguishable from accelerated vacuum or there is unexpected modification of the theoretical framework.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; expanded discussion of experimental observables, added references, version appearing in Phys Rev

Entangling two superconducting LC coherent modes via a superconducting flux qubit

Based on a pure solid-state device consisting of two superconducting LC circuits coupled to a superconducting flux qubit, we propose in this paper that the maximally entangled coherent states of the two LC modes can be generated for arbitrary coherent states through flux qubit controls.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

A comparison of bacterial growth inhibiting effects of six commercially available mouthrinses

    Get PDF
In this study the bacterial growth inhibiting effects of six commercially available mouthrinses (Hibident® Prodent® Merocet® Listerine® Veadent® and Meridol® were determined. Hibident® was used as a positive control. Five strains were tested (Streptococcus mutans C67, Streptococcus sanguis CH3, Veillonella alcalescens V1, Lactobacillus acidophilus JP and Actinomyces viscosus C74), as representatives of the supragingival human microflora. The Maximal Inhibiting Dilution (MID) was measured in batch cultures for each product and strain. With respect to the positive control, Hibident® (containing 0.2 per cent chlorhexidine), the most effective product was Meridol® (containing 125 ppm aminefluoride 297 and 125 ppm stannous fluoride) followed by Merocet® (containing 0.05 per cent cetylpyridinium chloride), Veadent® (containing 0.03 per cent sanguinarine), Listerine® (containing phenolic compounds) and Prodent® (containing 0.5 per cent sodium fluoride). Although all products have been separately reported to yield a plaque reduction in vivo, this study provides a firm basis for a comparison between products, as they were all evaluated in a similar way.</p

Convergence of the Generalized Volume Averaging Method on a Convection-Diffusion Problem: A Spectral Perspective

A mixed formulation is proposed and analyzed mathematically for coupled convection-diffusion in heterogeneous medias. Transfer in solid parts driven by pure diffusion is coupled with convection-diffusion transfer in fluid parts. This study is carried out for translation-invariant geometries (general infinite cylinders) and unidirectional flows. This formulation brings to the fore a new convection-diffusion operator, the properties of which are mathematically studied: its symmetry is first shown using a suitable scalar product. It is proved to be self-adjoint with compact resolvent on a simple Hilbert space. Its spectrum is characterized as being composed of a double set of eigenvalues: one converging towards −∞ and the other towards +∞, thus resulting in a nonsectorial operator. The decomposition of the convection-diffusion problem into a generalized eigenvalue problem permits the reduction of the original three-dimensional problem into a two-dimensional one. Despite the operator being nonsectorial, a complete solution on the infinite cylinder, associated to a step change of the wall temperature at the origin, is exhibited with the help of the operator’s two sets of eigenvalues/eigenfunctions. On the computational point of view, a mixed variational formulation is naturally associated to the eigenvalue problem. Numerical illustrations are provided for axisymmetrical situations, the convergence of which is found to be consistent with the numerical discretization
