Paraplegia due to missed thoracic meningioma after lumbar spinal decompression surgery: A case report and review of the literature

Get PDF
Spinal meningiomas are often localized to the thoracic level and symptoms from a spinal meningioma are determined by the location of the mass. We present a case of thoracic paraplegia due to a thoracic spinal cord tumor (meningioma) that was not detected during lumbar spinal decompressive surgery. Thoracic mass was detected in level of T2-3 on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient was re-operated and the patient's neurologic symptoms were partially relieved. Surgeons should know that a thoracic silent meningioma can aggrevate neurological symptoms after lumbar spinal decompression surgery and should inform their patient before surgery

Classification of Scatter Plot Images Using Deep Learning

Scatter plot is one of the well‐known charts and is frequently embedded in different types of documents such as articles, books, and dissertations. However, the information given in the scatter plots can’t be directly noticed by visually impaired individuals, because they are usually in an image format, and so they are not naturally readable by machines. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a system that can extract visual properties from scatter plot images using deep learning and image processing techniques. It is the first study that automatically classifies scatter plots in terms of two aspects: degree of correlation (strong or weak) and types of correlation (positive, negative, or neutral). In the experimental studies, alternative convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures were compared on both synthetic and real‐world datasets in terms of accuracy, including Residual Networks (ResNet), Alex Networks (AlexNet), and Visual Geometry Group (VGG) Networks. The experimental results showed that the proposed system successfully (93.90%) classified scatter plot images to help visually impaired users understand the information given in the graph.</p

Investigation of Pathergy In Patients With Fibromyalgia

Aim: Recent studies showed increased axon reflex flare reaction to mechanical and chemical stimuli associated with neurogenic inflammation in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Pathergy test is identified as a non-specific hypersensitivity reaction to minimal trauma. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with FM had a positive pathergy test or not. Methods: Forty-six patients who met the 1990 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for the classification of FM and fifty-one healthy control subjects (HCs) were included in this study. Twenty-eight patients with Behcet’s disease were included as disease control for Pathergy test. The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) was used for assessment of functional status in patients with FM. The Nottingham Health Profile was used for assessment of quality of life in all subjects. Results: There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics between the three groups (p > 0.05). NHP-pain, NHP-physical mobility, NHP-energy, NHP-emotional reaction, NHP-sleep and NHP-total scores were significantly higher in patients with FM compared to HCs (p < 0.001). Neither patients with FM nor HCs had a positive pathergy test. Conclusion: There are some pathophysiological changes in the skin biopsies of patients with FM; however, these changes are not accompanied by a positive pathergy test.Key Words: Fibromyalgia, Pathergy tes

Atypical cutaneous features in adult onset Still′s disease

Adult onset Still′s disease is a rare but potentially serious disease. We present five cases of adult-onset Still′s disease seen by us over a period of one year. The patients were all females and 28-39 years of age. Symptoms had been present for 2-6 weeks in three patients. The other two had been on a few years′ follow-up for rheumatoid arthritis before the onset of rashes and fever. The patients had persistent erythematous maculopapular eruptions on face, body and extremities, with moderate to severe pruritus and/or a burning sensation that decreased their quality of life. The typical evanescent rash was not observed. High ferritin values were detected in all the patients and total serum IgE was increased in two. All the patients were started on oral prednisolone (0.5-1.0 mg/kg/day), and methotrexate (10-15 mg/week) had to be added in three patients. One patient was started on tocilizumab due to recalcitrant disease and one was lost to follow-up. Further investigation and classification of the various atypical cutaneous findings in adult-onset Still′s disease is necessary
