Social inequalities in the food consumption profile of the brazilian population : national health survey, 2013
É amplamente reconhecido que elevada concentração de renda prevalece no Brasil e que a posição socioeconômica dos segmentos sociais exerce influência nas condições de vida e saúde, incluindo a qualidade da alimentação. Medir a magnitude das desigualdades sociais no perfil da qualidade alimentar da população brasileira. Analisaram-se dados da amostra de 60.202 adultos da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde de 2013. Foram estimadas as prevalências de indicadores de qualidade alimentar segundo sexo, raça/cor, renda, escolaridade e posse de plano de saúde. Razões de prevalência foram estimadas por meio de regressão múltipla de Poisson. Maior prevalência de consumo de alimentos saudáveis foi verificada no sexo feminino, entre os brancos e no grupo de melhor nível socioeconômico. Entretanto,para alguns alimentos considerados não saudáveis, como doces, sanduíches, salgados e pizzas, também foi observada maior prevalência nos segmentos sociais mais favorecidos, nas mulheres e nos brancos, expressando a concomitância de escolhas alimentares saudáveis e não saudáveis. Desigualdade de maior magnitude foi observada quanto à comparação do consumo de leite desnatado e semidesnatado segundo renda (razão de prevalência - RP=4,48). Objective: To measure the magnitude of social inequalities in the food quality profile of the Brazilian population. We analyzed data from 60,202 adults who participated in the 2013 National Health Survey. The prevalence of indicators of food quality was estimated according to gender, ethnicity, income, schooling, and health insurance. We calculated prevalence ratios using multiple Poisson regression. Healthy food consumption was more prevalent among females, white people, and individuals with higher socioeconomic status. However, we also found a higher prevalence of some foods considered unhealthy, such as sweets, sandwiches, snacks, and pizzas, among the most favored social segments, in women, and white people, expressing the concomitance of healthy and unhealthy eating habits. The comparison between the consumption of skim and low-fat milk according to income (prevalence ratio – PR = 4.48) presented the most significant difference. In addition to the expressive social inequality identified in the Brazilian food profile, mixed patterns were detected, including healthy and unhealthy foods. Efficiency of some chemical pesticides against the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797) on corn field
The fall armyworm is one of the most important pest on corn fields. It causes enormous losses almost every year. In order to know the effects of some chemicals against the caterpillars, a study was conducted under field conditions in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, durin December of 1983. Plants were sprayed (200 liters per hectare) with a twenty liter costal manual sprayer. The treatments were nine: A - check (nothing was applied). B - moncrorophos, 240 g; C - biphenthrin 10 g; D - triazophos, 200 g; E - carbamate UC 75118, 150 g; F - monocrotophos, 400 g; G - acephate, 375 g; H - carbamate UC 76724:, 150 g; I - c lofentezine, 250 g. The quantities mentioned above are of active ingredient used per hectare. Two days after the spray, the best pesticides were triazophos and biphenthrin. After 07 days no one product had a good efficiency.A lagarta do cartucho do milho é um sério depredador da cultura do milho. Quase todos os anos, os danos ocasionados às plantas são grandes. Para se conhecer o efeito de alguns defensivos sobre a citada lagarta, realizou-se este trabalho experimental, instalado em Piracicaba, SP, a 09 de dezembro de l983. Os produtos foram aplicados com pulverizador costal, manual, de 20 litros de capacidade, provido de bico em leque Teejet 8002. Utilizaram-se 200 litros de água por hectare e 30 cm³ de "Extravon" (espalhante-adesivo) por 100 litros de calda. Os tratamentos foram nove: A - testemu nha; B - monocrotofós, 240 g; C - bifentrina, 10 g; D - triazofós, 200 g; E -carbamato UC 75118, 150 g; F - monocro tofós, 400 g; G - acefato, 375 g; H - cabamato UC 76724, 150 g; I - clofentezina, 250 g. As quantidades acima são de ingrediente ativo por hectare. Aos 02 dias da pulverização, os melhores foram o triazofós e a bifentrina. Aos 07 dias, nenhum produto apresentava boa eficiência
Unveiling Trichosporon austroamericanum sp. nov.: A Novel Emerging Opportunistic Basidiomycetous Yeast Species
During an epidemiological survey, a potential novel species within the basidiomycetous yeast genus Trichosporon was observed. The clinical strain was obtained from a urine sample taken from a Brazilian kidney transplant recipient. The strain was molecularly identified using the intergenic spacer (IGS1) ribosomal DNA locus and a subsequent phylogenetic analysis showed that multiple strains that were previously reported by other studies shared an identical IGS1-genotype most closely related to that of Trichosporon inkin. However, none of these studies provided an in-depth characterization of the involved strains to describe it as a new taxon. Here, we present the novel clinically relevant yeast for which we propose the name Trichosporon austroamericanum sp. nov. (holotype CBS H-24937). T. austroamericanum can be distinguished from other siblings in the genus Trichosporon using morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic characters
Water relations and photosynthesis as criteria for adequate irrigation management in 'Tahiti' lime trees
Irrigation scheduling based on soil moisture status is one of the most useful methods because of its practicality and low cost. The effects of available soil water depletion on evapotranspiration (ETc), transpiration (E), leaf water potential at predawn (psiP) and midday (psiM), stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation (A) in lime 'Tahiti' trees (Citrus latifolia) were evaluated to improve irrigation schedule and minimize water use without causing water stress. The trees were spaced 7 <FONT FACE=Symbol>´</FONT> 4 m and drip-irrigated by four drippers with the available soil water content (AWC) depleted by suspension of irrigation (40 days). Leaf water potential was measured on a pressure chamber (psiP and psiM) and leaf gas exchange was measured by infrared gas analyzer (E, gs and A). Evapotranspiration was determined with the aid of weighing lysimeter. Water soil content and potential (psiS) were monitored with TDR probes and tensiometers, respectively, installed at 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 m depths. Meteorological variables were monitored with an automatic weather station in the experimental area. The threshold AWC level for the onset of ETc decline was 43%, and 60% for gs, A, E and Y P. Also, psiP was more sensitive to AWC than psiM, and is therefore a better tool for irrigation. When AWC was around 60%, values of psiP and psis were -0.62 MPa and -48.8 kPa, respectively
Phenotypic Dissection of Bone Mineral Density Reveals Skeletal Site Specificity and Facilitates the Identification of Novel Loci in the Genetic Regulation of Bone Mass Attainment
Heritability of bone mineral density (BMD) varies across skeletal sites, reflecting different relative contributions of genetic and environmental influences. To quantify the degree to which common genetic variants tag and environmental factors influence BMD, at different sites, we estimated the genetic (rg) and residual (re) correlations between BMD measured at the upper limbs (UL-BMD), lower limbs (LL-BMD) and skull (SK-BMD), using total-body DXA scans of ~4,890 participants recruited by the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and their Children (ALSPAC). Point estimates of rg indicated that appendicular sites have a greater proportion of shared genetic architecture (LL-/UL-BMD rg = 0.78) between them, than with the skull (UL-/SK-BMD rg = 0.58 and LL-/SK-BMD rg = 0.43). Likewise, the residual correlation between BMD at appendicular sites (re = 0.55) was higher than the residual correlation between SK-BMD and BMD at appendicular sites (re = 0.20-0.24). Discovery, fine-mapping, and conditional analyses of genetic variants associated with C-reactive protein in multiethnic populations using the Metabochip in the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) study
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a circulating biomarker indicative of systemic inflammation. We aimed to evaluate genetic associations with CRP levels among non-European-ancestry populations through discovery, fine-mapping and conditional analyses. A total of 30 503 non-European-ancestry participants from 6 studies participating in the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology study had serum high-sensitivity CRP measurements and ~200 000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped on the Metabochip. We evaluated the association between each SNP and log-transformed CRP levels using multivariate linear regression, with additive genetic models adjusted for age, sex, the first four principal components of genetic ancestry, and study-specific factors. Differential linkage disequilibrium patterns between race/ ethnicity groups were used to fine-map regions associated with CRP levels. Conditional analyses evaluated for multiple independent signals within genetic regions. One hundred and sixty-three unique variants in 12 loci in overall or race/ ethnicity-stratified Metabochip-wide scans reached a Bonferroni-corrected P-value<2.5E-7. Three loci have no (HACL1, OLFML2B) or only limited (PLA2G6) previous associations with CRP levels. Six loci had different top hits in race/ethnicityspecific versus overall analyses. Fine-mapping refined the signal in six loci, particularly in HNF1A. Conditional analyses provided evidence for secondary signals in LEPR, IL1RN and HNF1A, and for multiple independent signals in CRP and APOE. We identified novel variants and loci associated with CRP levels, generalized known CRP associations to a multiethnic study population, refined association signals at several loci and found evidence for multiple independent signals at several well-known loci.
