    Medical data protection in Europe : new rules vs. actual trends

    1995 is set to be a key year for the rules governing medical data in Europe: the Council of Europe is in the process of approving the final draft of a new Recommendation on the Protection of Medical Data while the member states of the European Union have adopted a directive on data protection. The paper wiIl present: i. some of the interim results of the University of Malta’s LEXIMP 9 Project reporting on the extent to which the Council of Europe's 1981 Recommendation on Data Protection in the Medical sector was actually implemented in the 34 member states of the Council of Europe.     From Genotype to Phenotype: Linking Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics Ontologies

    A small group of around 40 people came together at the Chancellors Conference Centre in Manchester for the Ontologies Workshop, chaired by Alan Rector and Robert Stevens. The workshop was, rather strangely, spread over 2 half days. In hindsight, this programme worked very well as it gave people the opportunity to chat over a drink on the Saturday evening and share ideas, before launching into the second half on the following day. The participants were from various walks of life, all with a common interest in finding out more about ontologies and promoting collaborations between the medical informatics and bioinformatics ontology communities

    Facilitators' influence on student PBL small group session online information resource use: a survey

    BACKGROUND: In problem-based learning curricular research has focused on the characteristics of good facilitators and how they influence student performance and satisfaction. Far less frequently addressed has been the question of how PBL facilitators influence the small group session activity of students. We investigated the impact that facilitators' encouragement of use or non-use of the Internet would have on the students' use of online information resources. METHODS: Survey of student and facilitator perceptions of facilitator behavior and student use of online information resources. RESULTS: Students who used online information resources rated their facilitators' behavior as more encouraging, while students in groups who didn't use online information resources during problem-based learning small group sessions rated their facilitators' behavior as less encouraging. This result was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports the role of the facilitator as an influence on medical students in small groups, particularly with respect to facilitator verbal behavior encouraging or discouraging student use of information technology in the problem-based learning small group session

    Capsular Typing Method for Streptococcus agalactiae Using Whole-Genome Sequence Data.

    Group B streptococcus (GBS) capsular serotypes are major determinants of virulence and affect potential vaccine coverage. Here we report a whole-genome-sequencing-based method for GBS serotype assignment. This method shows strong agreement (kappa of 0.92) with conventional methods and increased serotype assignment (100%) to all 10 capsular types

    The amino acid composition and the gene-size distribution based on the complete genome of Encephalitozoon cuniculi were analyzed. The amino acid compositions based on the 11 chromosomes of Encephalitozoon cuniculi were almost identical, whereas the distribution patterns of gene-size among the chromosomes slightly differed. Thus, the genome is constructed with gene assemblies which show similar amino acid compositions, and which do not have the restricted boundaries

    我々は視覚障害者向けの鍼灸、特に経絡と経穴に関する教育材料の研究に取り組んだ。この教材では、鍼灸分野における概念間の関係の体系的な理解を可能にすべく、オントロジーを用いた。オントロジーの概念図によりオントロジー教材を作成し、これを鍼灸の講義で使用した群とオントロジー教材未使用群とで経絡・経穴の試験の結果を比較し、その有効性を解析した。その結果、オントロジー教材を使用した学生の経絡・経穴の試験の得点は、オントロジー教材未使用群の学生の得点よりも有意(P < 0.001)に高く、経絡と経穴の学習にオントロジー教材有効である事が明らかになった。この結果は、オントロジーの視覚障害者教育への利用が視覚障害者の鍼灸理論の学習へも有効であることを示唆している。In this study we developed learning material of acupuncture - acupoints and meridians - for visually impaired people. For this learning material, we used ontology to construct the relations between the concepts in the acupuncture and moxibustion field which also enables tactical understanding similarly as visual understanding. We then used our learning material in the acupuncture lecture for the visually impaired students, and quantitatively analysed its efficacy to compare the results with the group which did not use the learning material. As a result, the students, who used our learning material, scored significantly higher in the examination than the students of non-use group (P < 0.001), suggesting that our learning material was effective for learning of acupuncture theory

    Challenges to the surveillance of non-communicable diseases – a review of selected approaches

    Background: The rising global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) necessitates the institutionalization of surveillance systems to track trends and evaluate interventions. However, NCD surveillance capacities vary across high- and low- and middle-income countries. The objective of the review was to analyse existing literature with respect to structures of health facility-based NCD surveillance systems and the lessons low- and middle-income countries can learn in setting up and running these systems. Methods: A literature review was conducted using Pub Med, Web of Knowledge and WHOLIS databases to identify citations published in English language between 1993 and 2013. In total, 20 manuscripts met inclusion criteria: 12 studies were analysed in respect to the surveillance approach, eight supporting documents in respect to general and regional challenges in NCD surveillance. Results: Eleven of the 12 studies identified were conducted in high-income countries. Five studies had a single disease focus, three a multiple NCD focus and three covered communicable as well as non-communicable diseases. Nine studies were passive assisted sentinel surveillance systems, of which six focused on the primary care level and three had additional active surveillance components, i.e., population-based surveys. The supporting documents reveal that NCD surveillance is rather limited in most low- and middle-income countries despite the increasing disease burden and its socioeconomic impact. Major barriers include institutional surveillance capacities and hence data availability. Conclusions: The review suggests that given the complex system requirements, multiple surveillance approaches are necessary to collect comprehensive information for effective NCD surveillance. Sentinel augmented facility-based surveillance, preferably supported by population-based surveys, can provide improved evidence and help budget scarce resources.
