The land ‘flow[ing] … with milk and honey’: Cultural landscape

This paper examines the cultural landscape of Peel town, a transient camp occupied for a short time in 1829–1830 during the Swan River settlement’s initial colonisation phase. The camp comprised indentured free colonists from Britain under the leadership of Thomas Peel. The research described shows that the camp’s layout altered over time as disease, low morale and the addition of further colonists from Britain into the camp area eroded the predetermined ideas of class segregation and the control of resources, seriously affecting the leadership group’s ability to maintain authority

Giant Helium Dimers Produced by Photoassociation of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

We produce giant helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is detuned red of the atomic $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0$ line and produces strong heating of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the five bound states belonging to a $0_u^+$ purely long-range potential well. These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about 150 $a_0$ and outer turning points as large as 1150 $a_0$.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Perturbation theory and the two-level approximation:A corollary and critique

This analysis addresses the use of a two-level approximation to simplify expressions derived from perturbation theory. It is shown that the limitations of validity for the emergent results are more stringent than is commonly understood, being equivalent in effect to the adoption of a more extensive approximation - one that significantly undermines the perturbative origin of those expressions. Effectively truncating the completeness relation, a series of interconnected operator relations comes into play, some with physically untenable consequences. A new theorem on the expectation values of operator functions highlights additional constraints upon any molecule modelled as a two-level system. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Purely-long-range bound states of He(2s3S)+(2s ^3S)+He(2p3P)(2p ^3P)

We predict the presence and positions of purely-long-range bound states of $^4$He$(2s ^3S)+{}^4$He$(2p ^3P)$ near the $2s ^3S_1+2p ^3P_{0,1}$ atomic limits. The results of the full multichannel and approximate models are compared, and we assess the sensitivity of the bound states to atomic parameters characterizing the potentials. Photoassociation to these purely-long-range molecular bound states may improve the knowledge of the scattering length associated with the collisions of two ultracold spin-polarized $^4$He$(2s ^3S)$ atoms, which is important for studies of Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Clinician Perspectives on Community Reentry for Mentally Ill Offenders in New York

The prevalence of individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) in prisons has risen in recent years. While incarcerated, individuals with SMI face many challenges, such as difficulties with peers and staff, and potential exacerbation of mental health symptoms. These difficulties do not subside when reentering their communities upon release. These individuals encounter unique challenges upon release, such as facing the difficult task of finding mental health services and other resources, housing, and health insurance. This study aimed to gather the perspectives of clinicians who worked for the Office of Mental Health in New York State regarding community reentry for inmates with SMI. Participants included two groups: (a) prerelease coordinators who worked in prisons throughout the state and (b) clinicians who worked at an urban outpatient clinic. Interviews with nine participants were completed to gather provider opinions on the unique challenges faced by offenders with SMI reintegrating into society. A goal of this study was to encourage enhanced resources during the reentry process and improved community resources for mentally ill offenders. Thematic analysis was used as the method of data analysis. The results found primary themes related to discharge planning and community reentry for inmates with SMI. Identified themes included: (a) inmate psychosocial risk factors, (b) issues of access to community resources, (c) problems in the discharge planning process, and (d) factors that facilitated the discharge planning process (all included additional sub-themes). The results were generally consistent with those of prior research, noting the challenges in finding necessary community resources and the myriad issues these inmates face upon release. The findings are discussed further, highlighting interfering and facilitating factors to reentry, and comparing the perspectives of the prison prelease coordinators and the community-based clinicians
