Accuracy of remotely sensed data: Sampling and analysis procedures
A review and update of the discrete multivariate analysis techniques used for accuracy assessment is given. A listing of the computer program written to implement these techniques is given. New work on evaluating accuracy assessment using Monte Carlo simulation with different sampling schemes is given. The results of matrices from the mapping effort of the San Juan National Forest is given. A method for estimating the sample size requirements for implementing the accuracy assessment procedures is given. A proposed method for determining the reliability of change detection between two maps of the same area produced at different times is given
An improved viscid/inviscid interaction procedure for transonic flow over airfoils
A new interacting boundary layer approach for computing the viscous transonic flow over airfoils is described. The theory includes a complete treatment of viscous interaction effects induced by the wake and accounts for normal pressure gradient effects across the boundary layer near trailing edges. The method is based on systematic expansions of the full Reynolds equation of turbulent flow in the limit of Reynolds numbers, Reynolds infinity. Procedures are developed for incorporating the local trailing edge solution into the numerical solution of the coupled full potential and integral boundary layer equations. Although the theory is strictly applicable to airfoils with cusped or nearly cusped trailing edges and to turbulent boundary layers that remain fully attached to the airfoil surface, the method was successfully applied to more general airfoils and to flows with small separation zones. Comparisons of theoretical solutions with wind tunnel data indicate the present method can accurately predict the section characteristics of airfoils including the absolute levels of drag
Some new methods in geomagnetic field modeling applied to the 1960 - 1980 epoch
The utilization of satellite and surface data together permitted the incorporation of a solution for the anomaly field at each observatory. The residuals of the observatory measurements to such models is commensurate with the actual measurment accuracy. Incorporation of the anomaly estimation enabled the inclusion of stable time derivatives of the spherical harmonic coefficients up to the third derivative. A spherical harmonic model is derived with degree and order 13 in its constant and first time derivative terms, six in its second derivative terms and four in its third derivative terms
Nationwide forestry applications program. Analysis of forest classification accuracy
The development of LANDSAT classification accuracy assessment techniques, and of a computerized system for assessing wildlife habitat from land cover maps are considered. A literature review on accuracy assessment techniques and an explanation for the techniques development under both projects are included along with listings of the computer programs. The presentations and discussions at the National Working Conference on LANDSAT Classification Accuracy are summarized. Two symposium papers which were published on the results of this project are appended
The utility of surface magnetic field measurements in the MAGSAT program
To take full advantage of the global, vector, survey by the Magsat satellite, and international program of augmented surface measurements was proposed. For secular variation and upper mantle conductivity the proposed measurements are global. The repeat station measurements for secular variation should be occupied at 2-3 year intervals. A special observing period in November and December of 1979 is proposed during which simultaneous, continuous, global measurements for upper mantle conductivity studies are to be gathered. Finally, it is recommended that the networks in operation during the IMS extend their operation through the Fall of 1980 to provide correlative data useful for high latitude disturbance studies and for crustal conductivity studies
Highly electronegative metallic contacts to semiconductors using polymeric sulfur nitride
The Schottky barriers formed on nāZnS and nāZnSe by polymeric sulfur nitride have been compared to barriers formed by Au. Barrier energies as determined by photoresponse, currentāvoltage, and capacitanceāvoltage methods show that (SN)_x is approximately 1.0 eV higher than Au on nāZnS and 0.3ā0.4 eV higher than Au on nāZnSe. We believe that this is the first report of any metallic contact more electronegative than Au
