Optical fiber has seen significant development in the technical fields where it has been used in the last years. In the first place, obviously, for the Internet and, more broadly, to improve communication efficiency; but, more recently, for medicinal, structural, or lighting engineering applications. Furthermore, many optical solutions are beginning to be researched in the aerospace sector. The use of optical fiber, in particular, is strongly related to the employment of FBG type optical sensors, which may be particularly suitable for specific measurements of relevant physical parameters to be performed on specimens with typical aeronautical and/ or space employment. More specifically, the performance of several FBG sensors for temperature measurement in vacuum for validation tests of space products has been examined during this work. Unlike typical thermocouples, the adoption of this new type of sensor can provide substantial benefits, beginning with a significant gain in terms of the size of the fiber, which ensures a minimum disturbance on thermal data. Furthermore, if supplied with a suitable coating (in polyimide), the optical fiber may guarantee a very high operating temperature range, which is extensively compatible with the high-temperature range existent in space. The measurements were divided into two independent phases. First, a preliminary test was performed in the laboratory using a climatic chamber to evaluate several sensor network integration methodologies on the specimens and select the most effective one for the vacuum test. The test demonstrated that a simple adhesive bonding of the fiber to the specimens ensures a precise temperature measurement under vacuum and stable conditions. The following vacuum test program confirmed that FBGs could be used as temperature sensors even at very high temperatures. The good results of this test encourage us to consider FBG strategic for space applications and, particularly, for thermal characterizations, thanks to the high number of available sensors, combined with the minimal cable's size. However, further studies are required in cryogenic cases to validate the entire range of extreme temperatures that characterize the space environment

Enhancing the physicochemical properties of nickel cobaltite catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers

\ua9 The Author(s) 2024. Hierarchical hollow urchin-like nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) was synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal method. The effects of metal composition and surfactant addition on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were investigated. The addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) reduced particle aggregation, resulting in a higher electrochemical active surface area and electrical conductivity. Lowering the Ni content from 1.0 to 0.25 did not alter the morphology and structure of the product to any extent. However, the crystallite size slightly increased. Among the spinels with different Ni and Co compositions, NiCo2O4 exhibited a superior OER electrocatalytic activity, achieving a 380 mV overpotential at 10 mA/cm2 current density. It also delivered a good performance in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) using 1 M NaOH at 60 \ub0C, reaching a current density of about 420 mA/cm2 at a cell voltage of 1.95 V

BACKGROUND: Patients with hip fracture and depression are less likely to recover functional ability. This review sought to identify prognostic factors of depression or depressive symptoms up to 1 year after hip fracture surgery in adults. This review also sought to describe proposed underlying mechanisms for their association with depression or depressive symptoms. METHODS: We searched for published (MEDLINE, Embase, PsychInfo, CINAHL and Web of Science Core Collection) and unpublished (OpenGrey, Greynet, BASE, conference proceedings) studies. We did not impose any date, geographical, or language limitations. Screening (Covidence), extraction (Checklist for critical Appraisal and data extraction for systematic Reviews of prediction Modelling Studies, adapted for use with prognostic factors studies Checklist), and quality appraisal (Quality in Prognosis Studies tool) were completed in duplicate. Results were summarised narratively. RESULTS: In total, 37 prognostic factors were identified from 12 studies included in this review. The quality of the underlying evidence was poor, with all studies at high risk of bias in at least one domain. Most factors did not have a proposed mechanism for the association. Where factors were investigated by more than one study, the evidence was often conflicting. CONCLUSION: Due to conflicting and low quality of available evidence it is not possible to make clinical recommendations based on factors prognostic of depression or depressive symptoms after hip fracture. Further high-quality research investigating prognostic factors is warranted to inform future intervention and/or stratified approaches to care after hip fracture. The role of sexually dimorphic skin colour and shape in attractiveness of male faces

Evidence for attraction to sexually dimorphic features in male faces is inconsistent in the literature. Mixed results regarding facial masculinity and male attractiveness may arise partly from different influences of face shape and face colouration depending on whether colour was controlled. Recent research suggests that masculinity in face colour, namely darker skin, and femininity in shape are attractive in male faces. Here we examine the influence of sexual dimorphism in skin colour and face shape on attractiveness in 3 experiments. We allowed female participants to manipulate male and female face images along axes of sexual dimorphism in skin colour and/or shape in order to optimise attractiveness. Participants searching for the most attractive appearance chose to masculinise the colour of male faces more than the colour of female faces (although not reaching significance in Experiment 3; p = .16). We found a clear preference for feminine shape in male faces supporting predictions of recent research. These results help to clarify the influence of facial masculinity in women's attractiveness preferences

Purpose: to discuss the implementation and use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY) among children and adolescents, within the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) field. / Methods: an integrative literature review. PubMed, Web of Science and VHL databases were searched for papers published between 2006 and 2017 that reported on the use of ICF and ICF-CY within the AAC context. Eighteen papers were reviewed and sorted into: Category i) papers which reported on the use of the ICF or ICF-CY with people who rely on AAC; and Category ii) theoretical papers or papers that used the ICF and ICF-CY to organize the results. / Results: papers used the frameworks with different purposes, including the characterization of the children and their environment, goal setting and measurement of the results of therapeutic intervention. The papers drew on all elements, however, Activities and Participation were the components most used. Parents or caregivers were most commonly consulted in classifying the children’s and young people’s profiles of functioning, followed by the Educators and speech and language pathologists. / Conclusion: classifications have shown advantages when used in the AAC field. Therefore, it is necessary to provide training in order for professionals to implement them in services

Conformational analysis of the Streptococcus pneumoniae hyaluronate lyase and characterization of Its hyaluronan-specific carbohydrate-binding module

    No full text
For a subset of pathogenic microorganisms, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, the recognition and degradation of host hyaluronan contributes to bacterial spreading through the extracellular matrix and enhancing access to host cell surfaces. The hyaluronate lyase (Hyl) presented on the surface of S. pneumoniae performs this role. Using glycan microarray screening, affinity electrophoresis, and isothermal titration calorimetry we show that the N-terminal module of Hyl is a hyaluronan-specific carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) and the founding member of CBM family 70. The 1.2 Å resolution x-ray crystal structure of CBM70 revealed it to have a β-sandwich fold, similar to other CBMs. The electrostatic properties of the binding site, which was identified by site-directed mutagenesis, are distinct from other CBMs and complementary to its acidic ligand, hyaluronan. Dynamic light scattering and solution small angle x-ray scattering revealed the full-length Hyl protein to exist as a monomer/dimer mixture in solution. Through a detailed analysis of the small angle x-ray scattering data, we report the pseudoatomic solution structures of the monomer and dimer forms of the full-length multimodular Hyl

Carcinoma-associated fucosylated antigens are markers of the epithelial state and can contribute to cell adhesion through CLEC17A (Prolectin)

    Get PDF
International audienceTerminal fucosylated motifs of glycoproteins and glycolipid chains are often altered in cancer cells. We investigated the link between fucosylation changes and critical steps in cancer progression: epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and lymph node metastasis. Using mammary cell lines, we demonstrate that during EMT, expression of some fucosylated antigens (e.g.: Lewis Y) is decreased as a result of repression of the fucosyltransferase genes FUT1 and FUT3. Moreover, we identify the fucose-binding bacterial lectin BC2L-C-Nt as a specific probe for the epithelial state. Prolectin (CLEC17A), a human lectin found on lymph node B cells, shares ligand specificities with BC2L-C-Nt. It binds preferentially to epithelial rather than to mesenchymal cells, and microfluidic experiments showed that prolectin behaves as a cell adhesion molecule for epithelial cells. Comparison of paired primary tumors/ lymph node metastases revealed an increase of prolectin staining in metastasis and high FUT1 and FUT3 mRNA expression was associated with poor prognosis. Our data suggest that tumor cells invading the lymph nodes and expressing fucosylated motifs associated with the epithelial state could use prolectin as a colonization factor
