Fast Stochastic Hierarchical Bayesian MAP for Tomographic Imaging
Any image recovery algorithm attempts to achieve the highest quality
reconstruction in a timely manner. The former can be achieved in several ways,
among which are by incorporating Bayesian priors that exploit natural image
tendencies to cue in on relevant phenomena. The Hierarchical Bayesian MAP
(HB-MAP) is one such approach which is known to produce compelling results
albeit at a substantial computational cost. We look to provide further analysis
and insights into what makes the HB-MAP work. While retaining the proficient
nature of HB-MAP's Type-I estimation, we propose a stochastic
approximation-based approach to Type-II estimation. The resulting algorithm,
fast stochastic HB-MAP (fsHBMAP), takes dramatically fewer operations while
retaining high reconstruction quality. We employ our fsHBMAP scheme towards the
problem of tomographic imaging and demonstrate that fsHBMAP furnishes promising

Centralizers of maximal regular subgroups in simple Lie groups and relative congruence classes of representations
In the paper we present a new, uniform and comprehensive description of
centralizers of the maximal regular subgroups in compact simple Lie groups of
all types and ranks. The centralizer is either a direct product of finite
cyclic groups, a continuous group of rank 1, or a product, not necessarily
direct, of a continuous group of rank 1 with a finite cyclic group. Explicit
formulas for the action of such centralizers on irreducible representations of
the simple Lie algebras are given.Comment: 27 page
Olivines in angrite LEW 87051: Phenos or xenos
Nyquist et al. recently reported the presence of live Mn-53 in angrite LEW 86010 when it crystallized. Hence, melting must have occurred within approx. 10 Ma of the accretion of the angrite parent body, and LEW 86010 is the oldest known differentiated meteorite. This discovery has made it even more desirable to understand teh petrogenesis of angrites, which presumably were all formed at a similar time. As part of the continuing work on angrite petrogenesis, crystallization experiments were conducted on LEW 87051, the other Antarctic angrite, to clarify its petrogenesis. Several aspects of the experimental work is reported. Although the details are not understood, it is clear that the Cr abundance in the experimental olivines must be controlled by spinel crystallization

Take Me Out: Space and Place in Library Interactions
Information interactions are strongly affected by the place where they occur. Specific locations are ofen associated with searches on particular topics, and individual users perform different tasks in habituated places. A classic example of habituated space is the commuter who regularly reads the news on the train. This paper investigates these associations through four user studies that examine different uses of place in information interaction. Through this, we reveal the ways in which the location of information interactions makes them effective or ineffective. This extends our interpretation of the role of place in information interaction beyond established foci such as location-based search

It is based on analyses of the 1994-95 Family and Working Lives Survey, a representative sample of more than 9,000 people in Great Britain aged 16 to 69 years. Getting creative in everyday life: Investigating arts and crafts hobbyists' information behavior
While there has been increasing interest in how creative professionals find information to drive creative outputs, previous information behavior research has largely ignored how arts and crafts hobbyists look for information sources in their everyday lives. To fill this literature gap, we conducted interviews and observations with arts and crafts hobbyists to find out how they conceive potential DIY projects. The findings highlight three themes: the dearth of human sources, the prevalence of domain-specific information, and the use of self-curated information. In addition to empirical results, this work also broadens the understanding of information behavior in an arts and crafts context by studying populations beyond professional artists
