Effect of parallel magnetic field on the Zero Differential Resistance State
The non-linear zero-differential resistance state (ZDRS) that occurs for
highly mobile two-dimensional electron systems in response to a dc bias in the
presence of a strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the electron plane
is suppressed and disappears gradually as the magnetic field is tilted away
from the perpendicular at fixed filling factor . Good agreement is found
with a model that considers the effect of the Zeeman splitting of Landau levels
enhanced by the in-plane component of the magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Just wrong? Or just WEIRD? Investigating the prevalence of moral dumbfounding in non-Western samples
Moral dumbfounding is the phenomenon that is observed when people defend a moral judgement even though they cannot provide a reason for this judgement. Dumbfounded responding may include admitting to not having reasons, or the use of unsupported declarations (e.g., âItâs just wrongâ) as justification for a judgement. Published evidence for dumbfounding has drawn exclusively on samples of WEIRD backgrounds (Western, educated, industrialised, rich, and democratic), and it remains unclear whether the phenomenon is generalilsable to other populations. In three studies we apply a standardised moral dumbfounding task, and show evidence for moral dumbfounding in a Chinese sample (Study 1), an Indian sample (Study 2), and a mixed sample primarily from North Africa and the Middle East (MENA region, Study 3)
Antibiotic resistance, bacterial transmission and improved prediction of bacterial infection in patients with antibody deficiency
Background
Antibody-deficient patients are at high risk of respiratory tract infections. Many therefore receive antibiotic prophylaxis and have access to antibiotics for self-administration in the event of breakthrough infections, which may increase antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Objectives
To understand AMR in the respiratory tract of patients with antibody deficiency.
Methods
Sputum samples were collected from antibody-deficient patients in a cross-sectional and prospective study; bacteriology culture, 16S rRNA profiling and PCR detecting macrolide resistance genes were performed. Bacterial isolates were identified using MALDI-TOF, antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disc diffusion and WGS of selected isolates was done using Illumina NextSeq with analysis for resistome and potential cross-transmission. Neutrophil elastase was measured by a ProteaseTag immunoassay.
Results
Three hundred and forty-three bacterial isolates from sputum of 43 patients were tested. Macrolide and tetracycline resistance were common (82% and 35% of isolates). erm(B) and mef(A) were the most frequent determinants of macrolide resistance. WGS revealed viridans streptococci as the source of AMR genes, of which 23% also carried conjugative plasmids linked with AMR genes and other mobile genetic elements. Phylogenetic analysis of Haemophilus influenzae isolates suggested possible transmission between patients attending clinic.
In the prospective study, a negative correlation between sputum neutrophil elastase concentration and Shannon entropy α-diversity (Spearmanâs Ïâ=ââ0.306, Pâ=â0.005) and a positive relationship with BergerâParker dominance index (Ïâ=â0.502, Pâ<â0.001) were found. Similar relationships were noted for the change in elastase concentration between consecutive samples, increases in elastase associating with reduced α-diversity.
Conclusions
Measures to limit antibiotic usage and spread of AMR should be implemented in immunodeficiency clinics. Sputum neutrophil elastase may be a useful marker to guide use of antibiotics for respiratory infection
A Role for Dorsal and Ventral Hippocampus in Inter-Temporal Choice Cost-Benefit Decision Making
Previous studies suggest a preferential role for dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) in spatial memory tasks, whereas ventral hippocampus (vHPC) has been implicated in aspects of fear and/or anxiety. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that vHPC may be a critical subregion for performance on a delay-based, cost-benefit decision making task. Rats chose between the two goal arms of a T maze, one containing an immediately available small reward, the other containing a larger reward that was only accessible after a delay. dHPC, vHPC, and complete hippocampal (cHPC) lesions all reduced choice of the delayed high reward (HR) in favor of the immediately available low reward (LR). The deficits were not due to a complete inability to remember which reward size was associated with which arm of the maze. When an equivalent 10-s delay was introduced in both goal arms, all rats chose the HR arm on nearly all trials. The deficit was, however, reinstated when the inequality was reintroduced. Our results suggest an important role for both dHPC and vHPC in the extended neural circuitry that underlies intertemporal choice
Normative Alethic Pluralism
Some philosophers have argued that truth is a norm of judgement and have provided a variety of formulations of this general thesis. In this paper, I shall side with these philosophers and assume that truth is a norm of judgement. What I am primarily interested in here are two core questions concerning the judgement-truth norm: (i) what are the normative relationships between truth and judgement? And (ii) do these relationships vary or are they constant? I argue for a pluralist pictureâwhat I call Normative Alethic Pluralism (NAP)âaccording to which (i) there is more than one correct judgement-truth norm and (ii) the normative relationships between truth and judgement vary in relation to the subject matter of the judgement. By means of a comparative analysis of disagreement in three areas of the evaluative domainârefined aesthetics, basic taste and moralityâI show that there is an important variability in the normative significance of disagreementâI call this the variability conjecture. By presenting a variation of Lynchâs scope problem for alethic monism, I argue that a monistic approach to the normative function of truth is unable to vindicate the conjecture. I then argue that normative alethic pluralism provides us with a promising model to account for it
Risk factors associated with lambing traits
peer-reviewedThis article was first published in Animal (2016), 10:1, pp 89â95, © The Animal Consortium 2015The objective of this study was to establish the risk factors associated with both lambing difficulty and lamb mortality in the Irish sheep multibreed population. A total of 135 470 lambing events from 42 675 ewes in 839 Irish crossbred and purebred flocks were available. Risk factors associated with producer-scored ewe lambing difficulty score (scale of one (no difficulty) to four (severe difficulty)) were determined using linear mixed models. Risk factors associated with the logit of the probability of lamb mortality at birth (i.e. binary trait) were determined using generalised estimating equations. For each dependent variable, a series of simple regression models were developed as well as a multiple regression model. In the simple regression models, greater lambing difficulty was associated with quadruplet bearing, younger ewes, of terminal breed origin, lambing in February; for example, first parity ewes experienced greater (P7.0 kg) birth weights, quadruplet born lambs and lambs that experienced a more difficult lambing (predicted probability of death for lambs that required severe and veterinary assistance of 0.15 and 0.32, respectively); lambs from dual-purpose breeds and born to younger ewes were also at greater risk of mortality. In the multiple regression model, the association between ewe parity, age at first lambing, year of lambing and lamb mortality no longer persisted. The trend in solutions of the levels of each fixed effect that remained associated with lamb mortality in the multiple regression model, did not differ from the trends observed in the simple regression models although the differential in relative risk between the different lambing difficulty scores was greater in the multiple regression model. Results from this study show that many common flock- and animal-level factors are associated with both lambing difficulty and lamb mortality and management of different risk category groups (e.g. scanned litter sizes, ewe age groups) can be used to appropriately manage the flock at lambing to reduce their incidence
Stochastic Background Search Correlating ALLEGRO with LIGO Engineering Data
We describe the role of correlation measurements between the LIGO
interferometer in Livingston, LA, and the ALLEGRO resonant bar detector in
Baton Rouge, LA, in searches for a stochastic background of gravitational
waves. Such measurements provide a valuable complement to correlations between
interferometers at the two LIGO sites, since they are sensitive in a different,
higher, frequency band. Additionally, the variable orientation of the ALLEGRO
detector provides a means to distinguish gravitational wave correlations from
correlated environmental noise. We describe the analysis underway to set a
limit on the strength of a stochastic background at frequencies near 900 Hz

Considerable potential exists to improve lambing performance traits in sheep through breeding
peer-reviewedThe high demand for resources at lambing necessitates strategies to reduce such requirements; one such strategy is breeding programs that enable selection for fewer lambing events requiring assistance as well as less perinatal mortality. The objective of the present study was to estimate the genetic (co)variances for a range of lambing traits in sheep, based on alternative trait definitions that considered differences in mating type and litter size. A total of 158,561 lambing events from both crossbred and purebred Irish sheep were available. Four lambing traits were considered in the analysis: lambing difficulty score, lambing dystocia, lamb perinatal mortality and birth weight. Variance components for each trait were estimated using animal linear mixed models either in the entire data as a whole, or within sub-populations stratified by litter size (i.e., single versus multiple) or stratified by mating type (i.e., crossbred versus purebred animals). The presence of significant re-scaling and re-ranking across population strata were investigated to determine if genotype-by-environmental interactions existed. Considerable genetic variation existed for all lambing traits investigated. Irrespective of the dataset analysed, direct heritability estimates for lambing difficulty score (0.04 ± 0.02 to 0.12 ± 0.03), lambing dystocia (0.04 ± 0.01 to 0.09 ± 0.03), and lamb mortality (0.01 ± 0.01 to 0.09 ± 0.02) were all low. In contrast, lamb birth weight (0.11 ± 0.02 to 0.20 ± 0.04) exhibited a low to moderate direct heritability. Using the entire dataset, the maternal heritability ranged from 0.01 ± 0.005 (lamb mortality) to 0.15 ± 0.02 (birth weight). All direct genetic effects for the lambing traits were positively correlated with each other, except between lamb birth weight and perinatal mortality (-0.15; SE=0.16). Significantly different genetic variances in different environments and significant re-ranking between environments was detected for lamb mortality (across different mating types and litter sizes), and for lambing difficulty score (only across different litter sizes). Results clearly indicate that ample genetic variation exists for the lambing-related traits investigated
