    Reservoir architecture and heterogeneity distribution in floodplain sandstones: Key features in outcrop, core and wireline logs

    Exploration and production from formations deposited in low-gradient fluvial systems is typically associated with a high degree of uncertainty; a reflection of the inherent characteristics of these environments, notably the dominance of non-reservoir floodplain fines, rapid lateral facies variations and associated heterogeneities at different scales. However, for a field development to be successful it becomes crucial to know the location, geometry, dimensions and connectivity of the most permeable facies, related to the main channel and the associated proximal overbank deposits (crevasse-splay complexes). With the aim of addressing this problem, a multi-disciplinary study is presented, combining outcrop data, high-resolution sedimentological descriptions and advanced visualization techniques based on Digital Outcrop Models. This is compared with subsurface data from behind the outcrop (core, gamma ray and borehole image logs). The Mudstone–Sandstone Unit of the Triassic Red Beds of Iberian Meseta formation in south-central Spain was selected for the present study. The unit is characterized by the lateral and vertical stacking of four architectural elements: (i) channelized sandstone bodies; (ii) asymmetrical sigmoidal-shaped sandstone bodies; (iii) lobe-shaped to sheet-like sandstone bodies; and (iv) sheet-like mudstones. These elements represent meandering channel, crevasse-channel-splay and floodplain sub-environments, comprising a distal, low-gradient meandering fluvial system. Together with well-documented outcrop and core facies, calibrated log responses are also presented for the channel bodies (bell-shape Gamma Ray profile, random azimuths and low to high dip angles), the crevasse-splay bodies (funnel-shape Gamma Ray profile, unidirectional azimuths and low dip angles) and the floodplain deposits (serrated Gamma Ray profile, unidirectional azimuths and very low dip angles). The full integration of outcrop and subsurface datasets has enabled generation of a robust conceptual model with predictive potential when establishing the three-dimensional stacking of facies, distribution of heterogeneities, and the connectivity between reservoir rock geobodies of primary (channel) and secondary (crevasse complex) interest in this type of fluvial reservoir.Fil: Yeste, Luis Miguel.     3D Multi-Cell Simulation of Tumor Growth and Angiogenesis

    We present a 3D multi-cell simulation of a generic simplification of vascular tumor growth which can be easily extended and adapted to describe more specific vascular tumor types and host tissues. Initially, tumor cells proliferate as they take up the oxygen which the pre-existing vasculature supplies. The tumor grows exponentially. When the oxygen level drops below a threshold, the tumor cells become hypoxic and start secreting pro-angiogenic factors. At this stage, the tumor reaches a maximum diameter characteristic of an avascular tumor spheroid. The endothelial cells in the pre-existing vasculature respond to the pro-angiogenic factors both by chemotaxing towards higher concentrations of pro-angiogenic factors and by forming new blood vessels via angiogenesis. The tumor-induced vasculature increases the growth rate of the resulting vascularized solid tumor compared to an avascular tumor, allowing the tumor to grow beyond the spheroid in these linear-growth phases. First, in the linear-spherical phase of growth, the tumor remains spherical while its volume increases. Second, in the linear-cylindrical phase of growth the tumor elongates into a cylinder. Finally, in the linear-sheet phase of growth, tumor growth accelerates as the tumor changes from cylindrical to paddle-shaped. Substantial periods during which the tumor grows slowly or not at all separate the exponential from the linear-spherical and the linear-spherical from the linear-cylindrical growth phases. In contrast to other simulations in which avascular tumors remain spherical, our simulated avascular tumors form cylinders following the blood vessels, leading to a different distribution of hypoxic cells within the tumor. Our simulations cover time periods which are long enough to produce a range of biologically reasonable complex morphologies, allowing us to study how tumor-induced angiogenesis affects the growth rate, size and morphology of simulated tumors

    Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in NF1: Evidence for a More Severe Phenotype Associated with Missense Mutations Affecting NF1 Codons 844–848

    Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a common genetic disorder with a birth incidence of 1:2,000–3,000, is characterized by a highly variable clinical presentation. To date, only two clinically relevant intragenic genotype-phenotype correlations have been reported for NF1 missense mutations affecting p.Arg1809 and a single amino acid deletion p.Met922del. Both variants predispose to a distinct mild NF1 phenotype with neither externally visible cutaneous/plexiform neurofibromas nor other tumors. Here, we report 162 individuals (129 unrelated probands and 33 affected relatives) heterozygous for a constitutional missense mutation affecting one of five neighboring NF1 codons—Leu844, Cys845, Ala846, Leu847, and Gly848—located in the cysteine-serine-rich domain (CSRD). Collectively, these recurrent missense mutations affect ∌0.8% of unrelated NF1 mutation-positive probands in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) cohort. Major superficial plexiform neurofibromas and symptomatic spinal neurofibromas were more prevalent in these individuals compared with classic NF1-affected cohorts (both p < 0.0001). Nearly half of the individuals had symptomatic or asymptomatic optic pathway gliomas and/or skeletal abnormalities. Additionally, variants in this region seem to confer a high predisposition to develop malignancies compared with the general NF1-affected population (p = 0.0061). Our results demonstrate that these NF1 missense mutations, although located outside the GAP-related domain, may be an important risk factor for a severe presentation. A genotype-phenotype correlation at the NF1 region 844–848 exists and will be valuable in the management and genetic counseling of a significant number of individuals

    General anaesthetic and airway management practice for obstetric surgery in England: a prospective, multi-centre observational study

    There are no current descriptions of general anaesthesia characteristics for obstetric surgery, despite recent changes to patient baseline characteristics and airway management guidelines. This analysis of data from the direct reporting of awareness in maternity patients' (DREAMY) study of accidental awareness during obstetric anaesthesia aimed to describe practice for obstetric general anaesthesia in England and compare with earlier surveys and best-practice recommendations. Consenting patients who received general anaesthesia for obstetric surgery in 72 hospitals from May 2017 to August 2018 were included. Baseline characteristics, airway management, anaesthetic techniques and major complications were collected. Descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression modelling and comparisons with earlier data were conducted. Data were collected from 3117 procedures, including 2554 (81.9%) caesarean deliveries. Thiopental was the induction drug in 1649 (52.9%) patients, compared with propofol in 1419 (45.5%). Suxamethonium was the neuromuscular blocking drug for tracheal intubation in 2631 (86.1%), compared with rocuronium in 367 (11.8%). Difficult tracheal intubation was reported in 1 in 19 (95%CI 1 in 16-22) and failed intubation in 1 in 312 (95%CI 1 in 169-667). Obese patients were over-represented compared with national baselines and associated with difficult, but not failed intubation. There was more evidence of change in practice for induction drugs (increased use of propofol) than neuromuscular blocking drugs (suxamethonium remains the most popular). There was evidence of improvement in practice, with increased monitoring and reversal of neuromuscular blockade (although this remains suboptimal). Despite a high risk of difficult intubation in this population, videolaryngoscopy was rarely used (1.9%)

    Occupational image, organisational image and identity in dirty work: Intersections of organisational efforts and media accounts

    This article proposes that media representations of an occupational category may intersect with organizations’ efforts to construct a positive organizational identity and image. We fuse three streams of literature namely, organizational identity and image, media and the social construction of reality, and dirty work to extend extant literature on organizational identity and image. Attention is drawn to occupational image as the position of an occupational category in society. We contend that occupational image is likely to influence the decisions and actions taken by organizations and its members, in particular when the occupation is central to the organization’s mission. Occupational image is partly informed by the media. We analyse one year of media coverage of a dirty work occupation, specifically exotic dancing, and identify various ways in which the media portrays the exotic dancing occupation and the organizations providing these services. We focus upon two of these categories, namely Public (dis) Order and Art and Entertainment. We also draw upon a variety of data from one organization, For Your Eyes Only, to explore how organizational efforts to construct a positive organizational identity (based upon professionalism and legitimacy) and image (based upon fantasy, exclusivity and high quality service) intersect these media representations

    Paleomagnetism of deep-sea cores

    This review is intended to cover the principal developments that have occurred within the last six years in the paleomagnetic study of marine sediments. Recent work utilizing the reflecting-light microscope indicates that detrital high-temperature Fe-Ti oxides are probably responsible for most of the magnetic remanence in marine sediments. These minerals possess a spectrum of coercivities that makes it necessary to use alternating-field—demagnetization techniques to isolate stable components. It is possible to use the standard magnetic stratigraphy for the last 4 m.y. of earth history derived from terrestrial lavas. Using the ages of the magnetic boundaries from this time scale it is possible by extrapolation and interpolation to better determine the ages of the major events. The ages of these events in increasing age are Jaramillo, 0.87 to 0.92 m.y.; Olduvai, 1.71 to 1.86 m.y.; Kaena, 2.82 to 2.90 m.y.; Mammoth, 3.0 to 3.085 m.y.; Cochiti, 3.72 to 3.82 m.y.; Nunivak, 3.97 to 4.14 m.y.; ‘c’ event of the Gilbert series, 4.33 to 4.65 m.y. Through the use of long cores from the central Pacific and through correlation using fossil datums, it has been possible to extend the magnetic stratigraphy back to the upper middle Miocene to magnetic epoch 5. It is concluded that very short magnetic events are probably short-term excursions of the field and not true magnetic events. It is shown that the field of the earth averages to an axial-dipole field within a period of 27,000 years and that the field over the last two million years has acted as a geocentric axial dipole. The evidence shows that when reversals of the dipole occur, the values of the reversed inclination are not significantly different from the normal values. The use of magnetic stratigraphy in marine geology has opened up a new era in study of sedimentary processes and evolution of marine organisms
