    Multi-color carrier-envelope-phase stabilization for high-repetition-rate multi-pulse coherent synthesis

    Using a zero-offset carrier-envelope locking technique, we have synthesized an octave-spanning composite frequency comb exhibiting 132-attosecond timing jitter between the constituent pulses over a one-second observation window. In the frequency domain, this composite comb has a modal structure and coherence which are indistinguishable from those of a comb that might be produced by a hypothetical single mode locked oscillator of equivalent bandwidth. The associated phase stability enables the participating multi-color pulse sequences to be coherently combined, representing an example of multi-pulse synthesis using a femtosecond oscillator

    India is an important non-breeding ground for migratory waterfowl in the Central Asian Flyway. Millions of birds visit wedands across the country, yet information on their distribution, abundance, and use of resources is rudimentary at best. Limited information suggests that populations of several species of migratory ducks are declining due to encroachment of wedand habitats largely by agriculture and industry. The development of conservation strategies is stymied by a lack of ecological information on these species. We conducted a preliminary assessment of the home range and habitat use of Ruddy Shelduck Tadornaferruginea in the northeast Indian state of Assam. Seven Ruddy Shelducks were fitted with solar-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite transmitters, and were tracked on a daily basis during the winter of 2009-2010. Locations from all seven were used to describe habitat use, while locations from four were used to quantify their home range, as the other three had too few locations (<30) for home range estimation. A Brownian Bridge Movement Model (BBMM), used to estimate home ranges, found that the Ruddy Shelduck had an average core use area (i.e. the contour defining 50% of positions) of 40 km 2 (range = 22-87 km2) and an average home range (95% contour) of 610 km2 (range = 222-1,550 km2). Resource Selection Functions (RSF), used to describe habitat use, showed that the birds frequented riverine wetlands more than expected, occurred on grasslands and shrublands in proportion to their availability, and avoided woods and cropland habitats. The core use areas for three individuals (75%) were on the Brahmaputra River, indicating their preference for riverine habitats. Management and protection of riverine habitats and nearby grasslands may benefit conservation efforts for the Ruddy Shelduck and waterfowl species that share these habitats during the non-breeding seaso

    Elevated Thyroid Indices in Children and Adolescents with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Effects of Clomipramine Treatment

    Objective: To examine the basal thyroid function in pediatric Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) versus controls, and to explore the relation between baseline thyroid measures and response to clomipramine treatment, and the effects of treatment on thyroid hormones. Methods: Sixteen children and adolescents with DSM-III-R OCE and 13 control children and adolescents without psychiatric illness were compared on basal measures of thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4). For the OCD subjects, samples were compared pre- and post- 4 weeks of treatment with clomipramine. Response of OCD symptoms was measured by the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS). Results: OCD subjects demonstrated subtle but significant elevations of TSH, T3, and T4 pre-treatment compared to controls. Clomipramine treatment was associated with significant decreases in TSH and T3 concentrations. Pre-treatment TSH and T4 concentrations correlated with reductions in CY-BOCS following 8 weeks of clomipramine.     Galaxy Counts, Sizes, Colours and Redshifts in the Hubble Deep Field

    We compare the galaxy evolution models of Bruzual & Charlot (1993) with the faint galaxy count, size and colour data from the Hubble and Herschel Deep Fields (Metcalfe et al 1996). For qo=0.05, we find that models where the SFR increases exponentially out to z>2 are consistent with all of the observational data. For qo=0.5, such models require an extra population of galaxies which are only seen at high redshift and then rapidly fade or disappear. We find that, whatever the cosmology, the redshift of the faint blue galaxies and hence the epoch of galaxy formation is likely to lie at z>2. We find no implied peak in the SFR at z=1 and we suggest that the reasons for this contradiction with the results of Madau et al (1996) include differences in faint galaxy photometry, in the treatment of spiral dust and in the local galaxy count normalisation.Comment: 8 pages, 5 eps figures, needs paspconf.st
