Structure maps for hcp metals from first principles calculations
The ability to predict the existence and crystal type of ordered structures
of materials from their components is a major challenge of current materials
research. Empirical methods use experimental data to construct structure maps
and make predictions based on clustering of simple physical parameters. Their
usefulness depends on the availability of reliable data over the entire
parameter space. Recent development of high throughput methods opens the
possibility to enhance these empirical structure maps by {\it ab initio}
calculations in regions of the parameter space where the experimental evidence
is lacking or not well characterized. In this paper we construct enhanced maps
for the binary alloys of hcp metals, where the experimental data leaves large
regions of poorly characterized systems believed to be phase-separating. In
these enhanced maps, the clusters of non-compound forming systems are much
smaller than indicated by the empirical results alone.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Critical Current Peaks at in Superconductors with Columnar Defects: Recrystalizing the Interstitial Glass
The role of commensurability and the interplay of correlated disorder and
interactions on vortex dynamics in the presence of columnar pins is studied via
molecular dynamics simulations. Simulations of dynamics reveal substantial
caging effects and a non-monotonic dependence of the critical current with
enhancements near integer values of the matching field and
in agreement with experiments on the cuprates. We find qualitative
differences in the phase diagram for small and large values of the matching
field.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (3 color
Intraseasonal and Interannual Variability of the Quasi-Two Day Wave in the Northern Hemisphere Summer Mesosphere
This study uses global synoptic meteorological fields from a high-altitude data assimilation system to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the quasi-2 day wave (Q2DW) and migrating diurnal tide during the Northern Hemisphere summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009. By applying a 2-dimensional fast Fourier transform to meridional wind and temperature fields, we are able to identify Q2DW source regions and to diagnose propagation of Q2DW activity into the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere. We find that Q2DW is comprised primarily of westward propagating zonal wavenumber 3 and wavenumber 4 components that originate from within baroclinically unstable regions along the equatorward flank of the summer midlatitude easterly jet. Amplitude variations of wavenumbers 3 and 4 tend to be anti-correlated throughout the summer, with wavenumber 3 maximizing in July and wavenumber 4 maximizing in late June and early August. Monthly mean Q2DW amplitudes between 30 50N latitude are largest when diurnal tidal amplitudes are smallest and vice versa. However, there is no evidence of any rapid amplification of the Q2DW via nonlinear interaction with the diurnal tide. Instead, variations of Q2DW amplitudes during July are closely linked to variations in the strength and location of the easterly jet core from one summer to the next, with a stronger jet producing larger Q2DW amplitudes. Linear instability model calculations based on the assimilated wind fields find fast growing zonal wavenumber 3 and 4 modes with periods near 2 days in the vicinity of the easterly jet
Cholinergic suppression: A postsynaptic mechanism of long-term associative learning
Food avoidance learning in the mollusc Pleurobranchaea entails reduction in the responsiveness of key brain interneurons in the feeding neural circuitry, the paracerebral feeding command interneurons (PCNs), to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (AcCho). Food stimuli applied to the oral veil of an untrained animal depolarize the PCNs and induce the feeding motor program (FMP). Atropine (a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist) reversibly blocks the food-induced depolarization of the PCNs, implicating AcCho as the neurotransmitter mediating food detection. AcCho applied directly to PCN somata depolarizes them, indicating that the PCN soma membrane contains AcCho receptors and induces the FMP in the isolated central nervous system preparation. The AcCho response of the PCNs is mediated by muscariniclike receptors, since comparable depolarization is induced by muscarinic agonists (acetyl-ß -methylcholine, oxotremorine, pilocarpine), but not nicotine, and blocked by muscarinic antagonists (atropine, trifluoperazine). The nicotinic antagonist hexamethonium, however, blocked the AcCho response in four of six cases. When specimens are trained to suppress feeding behavior using a conventional food-avoidance learning paradigm (conditionally paired food and shock), AcCho applied to PCNs in the same concentration as in untrained animals causes little or no depolarization and does not initiate the FMP. Increasing the concentration of AcCho 10-100 times, however, induces weak PCN depolarization in trained specimens, indicating that learning diminishes but does not fully abolish AcCho responsiveness of the PCNs. This study proposes a cellular mechanism of long-term associative learning -- namely, postsynaptic modulation of neurotransmitter responsiveness in central neurons that could apply also to mammalian species
Line Intensities and Molecular Opacities of the FeH Transition
We calculate new line lists and opacities for the
transition of FeH. The 0-0 band of this transition is responsible for the
Wing-Ford band seen in M-type stars, sunspots and brown dwarfs. The new
Einstein A values for each line are based on a high level ab initio calculation
of the electronic transition dipole moment. The necessary rotational line
strength factors (H\"onl-London factors) are derived for both the Hund's case
(a) and (b) coupling limits. A new set of spectroscopic constants were derived
from the existing FeH term values for v=0, 1 and 2 levels of the and
states. Using these constants extrapolated term values were generated for v=3
and 4 and for values up to 50.5. The line lists (including Einstein A
values) for the 25 vibrational bands with v4 were generated using a
merged list of experimental and extrapolated term values. The FeH line lists
were use to compute the molecular opacities for a range of temperatures and
pressures encountered in L and M dwarf atmospheres. Good agreement was found
between the computed and observed spectral energy distribution of the L5 dwarf
2MASS-1507.Comment: 52 pages, 3 figures, many tables, accepted for publication in the

Transport Anomalies and the Role of Pseudogap in the "60-K Phase" of YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}
We report the result of our accurate measurements of the a- and b-axis
resistivity, Hall coefficient, and the a-axis thermopower in untwinned
YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} single crystals in a wide range of doping. It is found that
both the a-axis resistivity and the Hall conductivity show anomalous
dependences on the oxygen content y in the "60-K phase" below the pseudogap
temperature T^*. The complete data set enables us to narrow down the possible
pictures of the 60-K phase, with which we discuss a peculiar role of the
pseudogap in the charge transport.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Masculinity as Governance: police, public service and the embodiment of authority, c. 1700-1850
About the book: Public Men offers an introduction to an exciting new field: the history of masculinities in the political domain and will be essential reading for students and specialists alike with interests in gender or political culture. By building upon new work on gender and political culture, these new case studies explore the gendering of the political domain and the masculinities of the men who have historically dominated it. As such, Public Men is a major contribution to our understanding of the history of Britain between the Eighteenth and the Twentieth centuries
Evaluation of linear ozone photochemistry parametrizations in a stratosphere-troposphere data assimilation system
This paper evaluates the performance of various linear ozone photochemistry parametrizations using the stratosphere-troposphere data assimilation system of the Met Office. A set of experiments were run for the period 23 September 2003 to 5 November 2003 using the Cariolle (v1.0 and v2.1), LINOZ and Chem2D-OPP (v0.1 and v2.1) parametrizations. All operational meteorological observations were assimilated, together with ozone retrievals from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS). Experiments were validated against independent data from the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and ozonesondes. Additionally, a simple offline method for comparing the parametrizations is introduced.

It is shown that in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere, outside the polar night, ozone analyses are controlled by the photochemistry parametrizations and not by the assimilated observations. The most important factor in getting good results at these levels is to pay attention to the ozone and temperature climatologies in the parametrizations. There should be no discrepancies between the climatologies and the assimilated observations or the model, but there is also a competing demand that the climatologies be objectively accurate in themselves. Conversely, in the lower stratosphere outside regions of heterogeneous ozone depletion, the ozone analyses are dominated by observational increments and the photochemistry parametrizations have little influence.

We investigate a number of known problems in LINOZ and Cariolle v1.0 in more detail than previously, and we find discrepancies in Cariolle v2.1 and Chem2D-OPP v2.1, which are demonstrated to have been removed in the latest available versions (v2.8 and v2.6 respectively). In general, however, all the parametrizations work well through much of the stratosphere, helped by the presence of good quality assimilated MIPAS observations
Theorizing Masculinities in Contemporary Britain
This chapter examines two key issues about masculinities in contemporary Britain. First, we examine what the evidence says about the extent to which British masculinities are changing, and how this is manifest in contemporary society. Second, we explore how theoretical understandings of masculinities both shape one’s findings, and evolve in relation to a changing culture. We thus provide a partial history of masculinity theory and contextualise the chapters of this edited volume, in order to advance theoretical and empirical understanding of British masculinities. We argue that far from being a crisis of masculinities, the gendered changes in the social lives of British men are positive and to be welcomed
