An annotated list of phytophagous insects on immature black walnut in southern Illinois was compiled between 26 April, 1974, and 9 October, 1975. Approximately 300 species, in 10 orders, were collected by hand-picking and sweeping. Notes taken on the various species included types of feeding damage, instars present, predators and parasites, and distribution in southern Illinois. Lepidoptera (about 80 species collected) were responsible for the majority of damage observed

Life History and Laboratory Rearing of \u3ci\u3eGerris Argenticollis\u3c/i\u3e (Hemiptera: Gerridae) with Descriptions of Immature Stages

    Get PDF
The life history of Gerris argenticollis was investigated in Jackson County, Illinois, March-June 1986, and the immature stages were described. The water strider also was reared from egg to adult under laboratory conditions. This univoltine species overwintered as adults that became active in early March, appearing on a temporary woodland pond after the air temperature exceeded 12°C. Seasonal occurrence of the adults and immatures is discussed. Adults were last observed in mid-June. Feeding records are given. G. argenticollis was reared on Drosophila melanogaster adults under a 10L: 14D photoperiod (ca. 2800 lux) at ca. 21°C. The incubation period averaged 12.5 days. The average durations of the five nymphal stadia were 9.0, 7.6, 8.0, 9.2, and 12.0 days. The total developmental period averaged 58.3 days

OASIS - Identifying the Core Attributes for RDBMS Alternatives

Since their introduction in the 1970s, relational database management systems have served as the dominate data storage technology. However, the demands of big data and Web 2.0 necessitated a change in the market, sparking the beginning of the NoSQL movement in the late 2000s. NoSQL databases exchanged the relational model and the guaranteed consistency of ACID transactions for improved performance and massive scalability [1]. While the benefits NoSQL provided proved useful, the lack of sufficient SQL functionality presented a major hurdle for organizations which require it to properly operate. It was clear that new RDBMS solutions which did not compromise functionality or scalability were necessary, which has led to the rise of a new class of modern relational database management systems, NewSQL [2]. This paper seeks to identify a consistent set of requirements necessary for an ideal RDBMS substitute. Among these requirements include possessing the features of a modern RDBMS, which includes support of the relational data model and standard ANSI SQL, ACID transactions, and ODBC/JDBC drivers. Additionally, the substitute must address typical RDBMS’ shortcomings in scalability by providing cost-effective scale-out capabilities. These requirements will then be used to filter out existing NoSQL and NewSQL database systems which could serve as viable substitutes to a typical RDBMS

Understanding the Experiences of Latino Community College Students on Academic Probation: A Case Study

    Get PDF
The academic standards and policies of institutions of higher education consider student underachievement, among the other aspects of education. Academic standing addresses the probation status designed to intervene and inform students who are unable to meet certain academic institutional standards. However, there is a lack of research discussing the experiences of community college students on academic probation (AP). This qualitative case study explored the perceptions of Latino college students experiences with AP at a large community college on the west coast of the United States. Specifically, the transitions of Latino students to college as previous studies have demonstrated that their difficult experiences during their first year of college determine whether they are placed on AP or drop out. Transition Theory and Student Departure Theory guide this research. Moreover, the data collection and analysis characterize the participants’ experiences from which recommendations for the academic community were developed. Findings reveal that students experience stress during AP intervention and do not receive either enough academic support or knowledge on institutional policies before the intervention takes place. These findings can help higher education institutions understand the obstacles of students, especially Latino college students on AP, in maintaining the required academic standards and consequently assist them to retain and persist to complete their degree like their counterparts

Public Perceptions of Incarceration and Rehabilitation: The Business of Private Prisons within Societal Values of America

    Get PDF
With the tough on crime mentality, incarceration rates have rose throughout the country in regard to drug, alcohol, mental health and crime related issue(s). Because of this, our nation has been plagued by inequality in criminal justice along with inequity in incarceration sentencing. This literature discusses the background of the issue, along with the Who, what, where and most importantly, why. Finally, we are given proposed solutions by experts in the industry and guidance on where we can go from here

Social-Aware Forwarding Improves Routing Performance in Pocket Switched Networks

    Get PDF
Several social-aware forwarding strategies have been recently introduced in opportunistic networks, and proved effective in considerably in- creasing routing performance through extensive simulation studies based on real-world data. However, this performance improvement comes at the expense of storing a considerable amount of state information (e.g, history of past encounters) at the nodes. Hence, whether the benefits on routing performance comes directly from the social-aware forwarding mechanism, or indirectly by the fact state information is exploited is not clear. Thus, the question of whether social-aware forwarding by itself is effective in improving opportunistic network routing performance remained unaddressed so far. In this paper, we give a first, positive answer to the above question, by investigating the expected message delivery time as the size of the net- work grows larger

Social dynamics in conferences: analyses of data from the Live Social Semantics application

    Get PDF
Popularity and spread of online social networking in recent years has given a great momentum to the study of dynamics and patterns of social interactions. However, these studies have often been confined to the online world, neglecting its interdependencies with the offline world. This is mainly due to the lack of real data that spans across this divide. The Live Social Semantics application is a novel platform that dissolves this divide, by collecting and integrating data about people from (a) their online social networks and tagging activities from popular social networking sites, (b) their publications and co-authorship networks from semantic repositories, and (c) their real-world face-to-face contacts with other attendees collected via a network of wearable active sensors. This paper investigates the data collected by this application during its deployment at three major conferences, where it was used by more than 400 people. Our analyses show the robustness of the patterns of contacts at various conferences, and the influence of various personal properties (e.g. seniority, conference attendance) on social networking patterns

Bridging the gap between goal intentions and actions: a systematic review in patient populations.

To evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of if-then implementation intentions (if-then plans) in adult patient populations. Outcomes of interest included adherence, goal pursuit and physical health outcomes. Keywords were used to search electronic databases without date or language restrictions (up to 30 April 2014). Studies were included if they (1) concerned a patient population; (2) used if-then plans as a sole intervention or as part of treatment, therapy or rehabilitation; (3) if they were randomised controlled trials. The PEDro scale was used to evaluate study quality. Guidance as set out by the Cochrane Collaboration was used. Two reviewers independently extracted data, discrepancies were discussed and if required referred to a third reviewer. In total, 18 of the 2141 articles were identified as potentially relevant and four studies of people with epilepsy, chronic back pain, stroke and obesity met the inclusion criteria. People who form if-then plans achieved better outcomes on epilepsy and stroke medication adherence and physical capacity than controls.Of the four studies that used an if-then plan, only one (people with epilepsy) looked at the intervention as a stand-alone strategy. Further research needs to explore if this simple approach improves rehabilitation outcomes and is a helpful and feasible strategy for people experiencing disabilities. Implications for Rehabilitation Steps involved in achieving goals, such as doing exercises or completing other goal related tasks, can be compromised for people with chronic health conditions particularly resulting from difficulties in self-regulating behaviour. If-then plans are implementation intention tools aimed at supporting people to deal more effectively with self-regulatory problems that might undermine goal striving and goal attainment, and have been found to be effective in health promotion and health behaviour change. This systematic literature review identified four studies completed with patient populations, with three demonstrating effectiveness. If-then plans provide an opportunity for clinicians to develop better ways of implementing rehabilitation
