Probation, credibility and justice
This paper explores the difficulties that arise for probation agencies or those that deliver community sanctions in developing and maintaining their credibility in prevailing âlate-modernâ social conditions. It begins by questioning the limits of the pursuit and promise of âpublic protectionâ as a source of credibility, and then proceeds to examine the emergence of an alternative strategy â based principally on reparation and âpaybackâ â in Scotland, arguing that these Scottish developments have much to say to the emerging debates in England and Wales (and elsewhere) about the ârehabilitation revolutionâ and the proper use of imprisonment. The paper provides a critical account of the development and meaning of the Scottish version of âpaybackâ, linking it to some important philosophical and empirical studies that may help to steer the development of payback away from a âmerely punitiveâ drift. In the conclusion, I argue that probation agencies and services need to engage much more deeply and urgently with their roles as justice services, rather than as âmereâ crime reduction agencies
Reexamining evidence-based practice in community corrections: beyond 'a confined view' of what works
This article aims to reexamine the development and scope of evidence-based practice (EBP) in community corrections by exploring three sets of issues. Firstly, we examine the relationships between the contested purposes of community supervision and their relationships to questions of evidence. Secondly, we explore the range of forms of evidence that might inform the pursuit of one purpose of supervisionâthe rehabilitation of offendersâmaking the case for a fuller engagement with âdesistanceâ research in supporting this process. Thirdly, we examine who can and should be involved in conversations about EBP, arguing that both ex/offendersâ and practitionersâ voices need to be respected and heard in this debate
Determination of high temperature strains using a PC based vision system
With the widespread availability of video digitizers and cheap personal computers, the use of computer vision as an experimental tool is becoming common place. These systems are being used to make a wide variety of measurements that range from simple surface characterization to velocity profiles. The Sub-Pixel Digital Image Correlation technique has been developed to measure full field displacement and gradients of the surface of an object subjected to a driving force. The technique has shown its utility by measuring the deformation and movement of objects that range from simple translation to fluid velocity profiles to crack tip deformation of solid rocket fuel. This technique has recently been improved and used to measure the surface displacement field of an object at high temperature. The development of a PC based Sub-Pixel Digital Image Correlation system has yielded an accurate and easy to use system for measuring surface displacements and gradients. Experiments have been performed to show the system is viable for measuring thermal strain
Estimation of In-Situ Clay Strengths Using Marine Sediment Penetrators
A method has been developed to calculate soil shear strengths from the measured decelerations of a free-fall penetrator. The method is easy to apply, and appears to yield accurate estimates of in-situ soil strength over a wide variety of soil conditions, and for many different sizes and weights of penetrators. For gassy and/or sensitive soils, the method may yield strength values more accurate than those determined by conventional boring, sampling, and laboratory testing
Soil organic phosphorus and microbial community composition as affected by 26years of different management strategies
Agricultural management can affect soil organic matter chemistry and microbial community structure, but the relationship between the two is not well understood. We investigated the effect of crop rotation, tillage and stubble management on forms of soil phosphorus (P) as determined by solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and microbial community composition using fatty acid methyl ester analysis in a long-term field experiment (26years) on a Chromic Luvisol in New South Wales, Australia. An increase in soil organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus compared to the beginning of the experiment was found in a rotation of wheat and subterranean clover with direct drill and mulching, while stubble burning in wheat-lupin and wheat-wheat rotations led to soil organic matter losses. Microbial biomass was highest in the treatment with maximum organic matter contents. The same soil P forms were detected in all samples, but in different amounts. Changes in organic P occurred mainly in the monoester region, with an increase or decrease in peaks that were present also in the sample taken before the beginning of the experiment in 1979. The microbial community composition differed between the five treatments and was affected primarily by crop rotations and to a lesser degree by tillage. A linkage between soil P forms and signature fatty acids was tentatively established, but needs to be verified in further studie
Achieving operational excellence for industrial baking ovens
A series of experiments were performed on industrial baking ovens across five confectionery manufacturing sites around the world. The impact of different operating parameters such as air and fuel flowrates, oven temperature, exhaust flowrates and ambient temperature etc., on the product quality and overall oven performance were investigated. The energy flows through the baking oven were modelled using experimentally determined inputs to estimate the reduction in heat losses. A step change in operational efficiency was achieved through the study delivering 8.5% improvement in the oven performance. On average, 92 tonnes/annum of CO2 were saved from each oven. An additional 7% efficiency improvement was observed by integrating the baking oven with a heat recovery technology saving circa ÂŁ16k in fuel cost annually from a single oven. The observations and learnings from the work are not limited to baking ovens only, but can also be applied to other food manufacturing processes such as frying, broiling, roasting or grilling

Accidental spray drift from pesticide applications can result in dangerous conditions for humans, animals, and the environment. It also can mean extra costs for the applicator due to wasted chemical and inefficient applications. Although complete elimination of spray drift is nearly impossible, drift problems and their effects on our environment can be minimized with proper application techniques and favorable weather conditions

A ground-based experimental test program to duplicate and study the spacecraft glow phenomenon
The use of a plasma device, the Advanced Concepts Torus-I, for producing atoms and molecules to study spacecraft glow mechanisms is discussed. A biased metal plate, located in the plasma edge, is used to accelerate and neutralize plasma ions, thus generating a neutral beam with a flux approx. 5 x 10 to the 14th power/sq cm/sec at the end of a drift tube. Our initial experiments are to produce a 10 eV molecular and atomic nitrogen beam directed onto material targets. Photon emission in the spectral range 2000 to 9000 A from excited species formed on the target surface will be investigated
E-Cigarettes: Prevalence and Attitudes in Great Britain
Introduction: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are a means of recreational nicotine use that can potentially eliminate the need to smoke tobacco. Little is known about the prevalence of use or smokers' attitudes toward e-cigarettes. This study describes use of and attitudes toward e-cigarettes in Britain. Methods: Respondents from three surveys were recruited from a panel of adults in Britain. Preliminary online and face-to-face qualitative research informed the development of a smokers' survey (486 smokers who had used e-cigarettes and 894 smokers who had not). Representative samples of adults in Britain were then constructed from the panel for population surveys in 2010 (12,597 adults, including 2,297 smokers) and 2012 (12,432 adults, including 2,093 smokers), generating estimates of the prevalence of e-cigarette use and trial in Great Britain. Results: Awareness, trial, and current use increased between 2010 and 2012; for example, current use more than doubled from 2.7% of smokers in 2010 to 6.7% in 2012. The proportion of ever-users currently using e-cigarettes was around one-third in both years. In 2012, 1.1% of ex-smokers reported current e-cigarette use, and a further 2.7% reported past use. Approximately 0.5% of never-smokers reported having tried e-cigarettes. Conclusions: While we found evidence supporting the view that e-cigarette use may be a bridge to quitting, we found very little evidence of e-cigarette use among adults who had never smoked. British smokers would benefit from information about the effective use, risks, and benefits of e-cigarettes, as this might enable the use of e-cigarettes to improve public health
