Perceptions of foster care providers about shared living environments for adults with developmental disabilities.
This study presents the perceptions of Foster Care Providers in one western Massachusetts county who are integrating one or more adults with developmental disabilities into their family. This arrangement is called Adult Foster Care, Shared Living, or Supportive Living. It is a new model in the health care field, and no studies have documented the perceptions of providers who have the responsibility of twenty-four hour care of individuals with cognitive disabilities and physical handicaps. Little is known about how providers make sense of their role or what pressures and tensions they are facing as they interact with their new family member. The major findings of the study centered around the difficult and evolving role that shared living providers play in today\u27s health care system for individuals with developmental disabilities. Providers occupy a precarious middle ground between natural family units and more rigidly bureaucratic agencies and institutional systems. In a series of interviews, the following themes emerged as central concerns or issues for the shared living providers who participated in this study: Personal, family and work history; what is it like to be a provider; relationships between providers and individuals with developmental disabilities; organizational issues and tensions, and support systems for providers. Most providers entered the role expecting to work directly with their new family member outside of the regulations and restrictions imposed by group home mandates. They became frustrated and disillusioned by the increasing bureaucratic pressures and need for accountability. In their relationships with individuals with developmental disabilities, they sought to establish new patterns of interactions and to promote greater personal independence. At the same time, they struggled with the community\u27s conception of developmental disabilities. Many reported that inadequate day programs and respite care supports blocked their efforts to build a new concept of health care delivery
Elastic-plastic bending analysis of plates and slabs by the finite element method
The finite element method is applied to elastic-plastic plate
bending analysis. Square plates are divided into square elements
with corner nodes at which plastic rotations are introduced whenever
the internal principal generalized stress states satisfy a square
yield criterion. The analytical response of plates and. slabs to
monotonically increasing applied load is traced in a step-by-step
manner by digital computer. A complete history of displacements and
generalized stresses is developed through the elastic phase to collapse.
Results obtained from experiments on plates and slabs are compared
with those produced analytically in order to assess the validity of
the finite element model
Apparatus and Method for Drawing Continuous Fiber
An apparatus and method is disclosed for drawing continuous metallic wire having a first diameter to a metallic fiber having a reduced second diameter. A feed mechanism moves the wire at a first linear velocity. A laser beam heats a region of the wire to an elevated temperature. A draw mechanism draws the heated wire at a second and greater linear velocity for providing a drawn metallic fiber having the reduced second diameter
Instigated incivility at work
vii, 66 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.Includes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 51-62).This study investigates the relationships among instigated workplace incivility and family-work conflict, angry temperament and negative affect. Data from an online survey were analyzed using hierarchical regression. I predicted that family-work conflict, angry temperament and negative affect would all be positively related to instigated incivility (Hypothesis 1). Further, I hypothesized that trait anger and negative affect would moderate the relationship between family-work conflict and instigated incivility, such that this positive relationship would be stronger for individuals reporting high (versus low) trait anger (Hypothesis 2), and for individuals reporting high (versus low) negative affect (Hypothesis 3). Supporting Hypothesis 1, results suggest all three predictors have a significant positive relationship with instigated incivility. Additionally, contradicting Hypotheses 2 and 3, although there was some evidence of negative affect and angry temperament moderating the relationship between family-work conflict and instigated workplace incivility, the observed pattern was such that the relationship between family-work conflict and instigated incivility was stronger for those with low angry temperament and for those with low negative affect. Limitations and future research ideas are discussed

Monitoring dissolved organic carbon in Swedish forest streams after wildfire
In situ water quality monitoring devices (sondes) allow monitoring of dissolved organic matter (DOC) continuously at a high resolution via measurements of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM). Two sondes were used to test the hypothesis that DOC in local streams would decrease in concentration immediately after forest fire. It was expected that the sondes' measurements would be influenced by turbidity and require post hoc correction. A simple model to predict DOC from fDOM was designed and suggested that DOC inputs were reduced after the fire, but flushing of terrestrial carbon brought values back to normal in following spring. Analysis of fluorescence and absorbance suggested a change in the quality as well as quantity of carbon inputs. Sonde measurements were found to be severely affected by high turbidity events, and varied depending on the stream, but we could partially compensate for this with corrections based on laboratory analysis of samples taken from monitored streams. Future monitoring that relies on fDOM data should be supported by a sampling program to capture natural variation of DOC and turbidity in the monitored stream
Window on an era : Geelong : a post-industrial city
"Non-economical industrial sites are being demolished in Geelong, making way for alternative economic development. Whilst progress is inevitable, I question the wisdom of short-term financial gain over long-term loss of identity. The association of industrial buildings with the concept of cultural heritage, art and architecture does not seem so incongrous in other parts of the world."--leaf 2.Master of Arts (Visual Arts
