HST Fine Guidance Sensor Astrometric Parallaxes for Three Dwarf Novae: SS Aurigae, SS Cygni, and U Geminorum

We report astrometric parallaxes for three well known dwarf novae obtained using the Fine Guidance Sensors on the Hubble Space Telescope. We found a parallax for SS Aurigae of Pi = 5.00 +/- 0.64 mas, for SS Cygni we found Pi = 6.02 +/- 0.46 mas, and for U Geminorum we obtained Pi = 10.37 +/- 0.50 mas. These represent the first true trigonometric parallaxes of any dwarf novae. We briefly compare these results with previous distance estimates. This program demonstrates that with a very modest amount of HST observing time, the Fine Guidance Sensors can deliver parallaxes of unrivaled precision.Comment: 15 pages, 2 Table

Development of a quality of life questionnaire for patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (the PANNET module)

Gastrinoma; Insulinoma; Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumourGastrinoma; Insulinoma; Tumor neuroendocrino pancreáticoGastrinoma; Insulinoma; Tumor neuroendocrí pancreàticPancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (panNET) are heterogeneous neoplasms usually characterised by slow growth and secretion of hormones, which often cause symptoms. The effect of these symptoms on quality of life (QoL) has not previously been examined in detail. EORTC (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer) guidelines were followed in phases 1–3 to produce a potential module of questions usable for trials in panNET, focusing on three common types of panNET. For two less common types, a list of symptoms was constructed. Following an extensive literature search and phase 1a interviews with patients and healthcare workers, a long list of potential issues (169) was obtained. This list was shown to 12 patients from three countries in phase 1b interviews to check that no items were missed. The list was reduced to 57 issues. The list of issues was converted to questions, mainly from existing validated questions within the EORTC item library. The list of questions was then used in a phase 3 international study in eight countries using seven languages. A provisional module of 24 items is presented for use in nonfunctioning panNET, gastrinoma and insulinoma. This module increases knowledge concerning QoL in this condition and may be a useful adjunct in clinical trials. A phase 4 trial is being considered for validation of this questionnaire

Proceedings of the 2019 Canadian Inflammatory Myopathy Study Symposium: Clinical Trial Readiness in Myositis.

The Canadian Inflammatory Myopathy Study (CIMS) is a multicenter prospective cohort recruiting in 8 centers across Canada. One of the aims of CIMS is to conduct and participate in clinical trials in autoimmune inflammatory myopathies (AIM). Conducting clinical trials in rare diseases such as AIM presents challenges. During this symposium, experts in the field presented different solutions to successfully conduct clinical trials in AIM, including the importance of collaboration and careful trial design, as well as training and mentoring of young investigators

Survey of traffic volume is one of the simplest methods to obtain traffic data in order to better understand optimalisation andefficiency so that it can minimize vehicle traffic congestion problems on the highway. The method used is based on descriptive andanalytical methods, which is done is to classify the vehicles in classes manually by counting the number of vehicles per time unitbased on class - class. The purpose of the volume of traffic surveys carried out in the classified Narogong Cullinan Road, Bogorregency during the period August, 2011, results that can be found is the degree of saturation of the highway is still in an acceptablelevel. Analysis of traffic flow at the study site is still under the limit congestion. It is suggested that to reduce the traffic density, thetype of heavy vehicles such as out of the factory operates around the study site between the hours of 10:00 pm to 3:00 am

AbstractBackground:Radiotherapy with procarbazine, lomustine, and vincristine improves overall survival (OS) in patients with 1p19q co-deleted anaplastic oligodendroglioma/anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. Methods:This retrospective analysis investigated outcomes in patients with 1p19q co-deleted/partially deleted oligodendroglioma, oligoastrocytoma, anaplastic oligodendroglioma, or anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. OS and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and prognostic factors using the Cox proportional hazard model. Results:A total of 106 patients (between December 1997 and December 2013) were included. Median age was 40 years (19-66), 58 were male (55%), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status was 0 in 80 patients (75%). 1p19q status was co-deleted in 66 (62%), incompletely co-deleted in 27 (25%), and 1p or 19q loss alone in four (4%) and nine (8%) patients, respectively. Isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 R132H mutation was found in 67 of 85 patients with sufficient material. Upfront treatment was given in 72 (68%) patients and temozolomide alone in 52 (49%). Median time to radiotherapy in 47 patients (44%) was 34.7 months and 41.2 months in 9 patients with co-deleted/incompletely co-deleted anaplastic oligodendroglioma/anaplastic oligoastrocytoma who received upfront temozolomide alone. Median OS was not reached and 5-year OS was 91% for all groups (median follow-up, 5.1 years). On multivariable analysis for all patients, receipt of therapy upfront versus none (p=0.04), PS 1 versus 0 (p<0.001) and 1p19q co-deletion/incomplete deletion versus 1p or 19q loss alone (p=0.005) were prognostic for PFS. Isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 status was not prognostic for PFS.Conclusions:With similar survival patterns in low-grade/anaplastic gliomas, molecular characteristics may be more important than histological grade. Longer follow-up and results of prospective trials are needed for definitive guidance on treatment of these patients.</jats:p

Single or double headed capsules for the investigation of suspected small bowel bleeding: Are two heads better than one

BackgroundCapsule endoscopy is now the accepted first line investigation for suspected small bowel (SB) bleeding. Recent evidence suggests the diagnostic yield for SB pathology may be higher for tailored double headed (DH) SB capsules. Whether other forms of bidirectional capsules offer a similar advantage is less clear.AimTo compare the efficacy of single headed versus bidirectional capsules in detecting pathology in patients with suspected small bowel bleeding.MethodsA single centre prospective comparison study was conducted over an 8 month period in a tertiary care hospital. Patients referred with overt or suspected SB bleeding were assigned to either SB3 Medtronic SB capsule (SH) during the initial four months or PillCam Colon 2 Medtronic capsule (DH) during the subsequent four months. Studies were analysed by trained Capsule Endoscopists and approved by our institutions capsule review board. Findings were compared between SH and DH capsules using a chi2 or t-test as appropriate. A p value of <0.05 was considered significant.Results201 subjects were included, mean age 61.8 years, 90 (45%) male. Majority referred with occult bleeding, 153 (76%). DH and SH capsule used in 100 and 101 cases, respectively. 90% (n=181) capsules were complete and overall diagnostic yield was 57% (n=114). Diagnostic yield was similar between both groups - DH 53% (n=53), SH 60% (n=61). Positive finding in overt bleeding; SH 85% (n=22) versus DH 50% (n=11), p<0.02. SH capsules more frequently detected SB inflammation, 27 (27%) versus 9 (9%), p<0.002. More patients had another diagnosis in the DH (19) than the SH (9), p<0.04, the majority were type 1a vascular lesions, “red spots” or diminutive colonic polyps.ConclusionSingle head and double head capsules perform similary in terms of diagnostic yield overall. This supports the continued use of standard small bowel capsules for investigation of the small bowel
