Principal Longevity, Leadership Behaviors, and Student Academic Achievement

    Get PDF
Utilizing Pearson’s correlation and other forms of data analysis, the researcher explored relationships between principal longevity, leadership behaviors, and student academic achievement in this study. Additionally, the study considered the degree to which leadership behavior ratings seem to be associated with student academic achievement. The researcher found positive correlations among all three variables, with the strongest correlation being between principal longevity and student academic achievement. The only correlation that was found to be statistically significant was between principal longevity and student academic achievement. The researcher was also able to identify the highest and lowest rated leadership behaviors for principals with the most years of experience. The study indicated a need for school districts, and larger scale public school institutions, to study trends of principal longevity, and principal turnover, particularly in high poverty schools and schools with a history of underachievement. Strategies should be implemented to attract and retain high performing principals. All students would greatly benefit by the existence of systems that prevent turnover of effective principals

The closet door, the gateway to the self? : fashion, identity, and self-expression

This study explores the relationship between the decisions we make surrounding fashion, our sense of 'self,' and our attempts at self-expression through fashion. This thesis is based on the premise that material items and first impressions or appearances are important in our culture. Referring to postmodern theories of identity and symbolic interactionist approaches to the self, I will argue that our sense of 'self' is continuously developed through social experiences, and that the decisions we make about fashion are shaped by this sense of 'self.' With fashion we choose to either express our sense of 'self,' and/or display a 'desired self.' This is done by working with cultural codes established in part by the mainstream fashion industry. Included in this relationship is a discussion of the dialectical process of choosing between distinction and conformity when dealing with pressures from the mainstream fashion industry. Participant observation and a series of interviews will both support and add to this theoretical argument, as well as outline the continuous shift between expressing our sense of 'self' and displaying our 'desired self.

A comprehensive report on the provision of training in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Hulme and Rutton, 2013) proposed that one of the main areas for future research is investigation in to what happens to counselling students following qualification. This study, carried out in 2016, investigated the career trajectories of Abertay counselling students and looked to evaluate their career pathway once qualified. Additionally, the study looked to explore the links between course content and employability with a view to ensuring that the programme is relevant and continues to meet industry needs. Some key findings will be presented within this poster

Care transitions for older patients with musculoskeletal disorders: continuity from the providers’ perspective

    Get PDF

Introduction: Care transitions are a common and frequently adverse aspect of health care, resulting in a high-risk period for both care quality and patient safety. Patients who have complex care needs and undergo treatment in multiple care settings, such as older patients with musculoskeletal disorders, may be at higher risk for poor care transitions.

Methods: Key informant interviews were used to gather in-depth information on transitional care issues, particularly those which impact informational continuity, from the perspective of a range of health professionals (η=17) in care settings relevant to the care continuum of older patients with hip fractures.

Results: Three transitional care themes were identified; medical complexity impacts care trajectories, larger circles of care can be both beneficial and challenging, and a variety of channels and modes are required for meaningful information exchange. Many issues cut across each care setting, and address challenges to informational continuity among and between health care providers, patients, and caregivers.

Conclusions: Medical complexity enlarges the circle of care which challenges care continuity. There may be fundamental elements which, regardless of care setting, strengthen transitional care quality. Standardized transitional care processes might help to offset informational discontinuity across care settings as a result of this population's larger circles of care.</p

Racial/Ethnic Patterns in Prostate Cancer Outcomes in an Active Surveillance Cohort

Introduction. Concern regarding overtreatment of prostate cancer (CaP) is leading to increased attention on active surveillance (AS). This study examined CaP survivors on AS and compared secondary treatment patterns and overall survival by race/ethnicity. Methods. The study population consisted of CaP patients self-classified as black or white followed on AS in the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) multicenter national database between 1989 and 2008. Secondary treatment included radical prostatectomy (RP), external beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy (EBRT-Br), and hormone therapy (HT). Secondary treatment patterns and overall survival were compared by race/ethnicity. Results. Among 886 eligible patients, 21% were black. Despite racial differences in risk characteristics and secondary treatment patterns, overall survival was comparable across race. RP following AS was associated with the longest overall survival. Conclusion. Racial disparity in overall survival was not observed in this military health care beneficiary cohort with an equal access to health care

    Forgiveness and Prayer

Forgiveness and prayer are both topics of contemporary social science research, but they are not often considered together. The present study investigates how Christian respondents portray prayer when describing the process of interpersonal forgiveness. Just over half of the respondents mentioned prayer as an important part of forgiveness at their first opportunity in a structured interview protocol. Prayer responses were coded as inward, upward, or outward, with inward prayers being the most common. The narrative descriptions of inward prayer resemble Worthington\u27s (2001, 2003) REACH model of the forgiveness process

NADPH oxidase, NOX1, mediates vascular injury in ischemic retinopathy

Aims: Ischemic retinal diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity are major causes of blindness due to damage to the retinal microvasculature. Despite this clinical situation, retinopathy of prematurity is mechanistically poorly understood. Therefore, effective preventative therapies are not available. However, hypoxic-induced increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been suggested to be involved with NADPH oxidases (NOX), the only known dedicated enzymatic source of ROS. Our major aim was to determine the contribution of NOX isoforms (1, 2, and 4) to a rodent model of retinopathy of prematurity. Results: Using a genetic approach, we determined that only mice with a deletion of NOX1, but not NOX2 or NOX4, were protected from retinal neovascularization and vaso-obliteration, adhesion of leukocytes, microglial accumulation, and the increased generation of proangiogenic and proinflammatory factors and ROS. We complemented these studies by showing that the specific NOX inhibitor, GKT137831, reduced vasculopathy and ROS levels in retina. The source of NOX isoforms was evaluated in retinal vascular cells and neuro-glial elements. Microglia, the immune cells of the retina, expressed NOX1, 2, and 4 and responded to hypoxia with increased ROS formation, which was reduced by GKT137831. Innovation: Our studies are the first to identify the NOX1 isoform as having an important role in the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that strategies targeting NOX1 have the potential to be effective treatments for a range of ischemic retinopathie

Evacuation Behavior of Households Facing Compound Hurricane-Pandemic Threats

This study examines households\u27 prospective evacuation behavior during a hurricane-pandemic compound threat. Data from a 2020 survey of coastal Virginia households help answer two questions: (1) What factors associated with the threat and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and hurricanes influence prospective evacuation behavior of households during a compound hurricane-pandemic event? (2) What are the equity implications for emergency management policies and practices to support evacuation and sheltering during a compound hurricane-pandemic event? Households in the sample were split between those who stated they would evacuate away from the at-risk region and who would stay. Greater household vulnerability to hurricanes and COVID-19 and having sufficient financial resources increase likelihood of evacuation. Higher income households were more likely to have resources to evacuate and less likely to suffer financial consequences from a hurricane or pandemic. Racial minorities are more vulnerable to the pandemic and face greater resource challenges for evacuating

Interaction of estrogen receptor α with proliferating cell nuclear antigen

    Get PDF
The ability of estrogen receptor α (ERα) to modulate gene expression is influenced by the recruitment of a host of co-regulatory proteins to target genes. To further understand how estrogen-responsive genes are regulated, we have isolated and identified proteins associated with ERα when it is bound to DNA containing the consensus estrogen response element (ERE). One of the proteins identified in this complex, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), is required for DNA replication and repair. We show that PCNA interacts with ERα in the absence and in the presence of DNA, enhances the interaction of ERα with ERE-containing DNA, and associates with endogenous estrogen-responsive genes. Interestingly, rather than altering hormone responsiveness of endogenous, estrogen-responsive genes, PCNA increases the basal expression of these genes. Our studies suggest that in addition to serving as a platform for the recruitment of DNA replication and repair proteins, PCNA may serve as a platform for transcription factors involved in regulating gene expression
