    Measuring Black Hole Spin by the Continuum-Fitting Method: Effect of Deviations from the Novikov-Thorne Disc Model

    The X-ray spectra of accretion discs of eight stellar-mass black holes have been analyzed to date using the thermal continuum fitting method, and the spectral fits have been used to estimate the spin parameters of the black holes. However, the underlying model used in this method of estimating spin is the general relativistic thin-disc model of Novikov & Thorne, which is only valid for razor-thin discs. We therefore expect errors in the measured values of spin due to inadequacies in the theoretical model. We investigate this issue by computing spectra of numerically calculated models of thin accretion discs around black holes, obtained via three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. We apply the continuum fitting method to these computed spectra to estimate the black hole spins and check how closely the values match the actual spin used in the GRMHD simulations. We find that the error in the dimensionless spin parameter is up to about 0.2 for a non-spinning black hole, depending on the inclination. For black holes with spins of 0.7, 0.9 and 0.98, the errors are up to about 0.1, 0.03 and 0.01 respectively. These errors are comparable to or smaller than those arising from current levels of observational uncertainty. Furthermore, we estimate that the GRMHD simulated discs from which these error estimates are obtained correspond to effective disc luminosities of about 0.4-0.7 Eddington, and that the errors will be smaller for discs with luminosities of 0.3 Eddington or less, which are used in the continuum-fitting method. We thus conclude that use of the Novikov-Thorne thin-disc model does not presently limit the accuracy of the continuum-fitting method of measuring black hole spin.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. v2: fixed typo in author name, updated acknowledgment

    Glycosyl thiols are widely used in stereoselective S-glycoside synthesis. Their epimerization from 1,2-trans to 1,2-cis thiols (e.g., equatorial to axial epimerization in thioglucopyranose) was attained using TiCl4, while SnCl4 promoted their axial-to-equatorial epimerization. The method included application for stereoselective β-d-manno- and β-l-rhamnopyranosyl thiol formation.     Students in the BUMK4000 Marketing Management course welcomed the directors of two academic programs, Musical Theatre and Medical Laboratory Technology, as clients. Following extensive interviews, the students worked several weeks on a detailed marketing plan for each program. The students updated SSU Marketing and Communications of their efforts and assured their proposals aligned with planned university marketing and branding. The groups presented their plans to the directors at the end of the semester as professionally prepared materials suitable for actual, practical marketing

    Free Flap Reconstruction of Self-Inflicted Submental Gunshot Wounds

    In this study, we review outcomes for 15 patients with self-inflicted submental gunshot wounds requiring free flap reconstruction. Patients presented to two tertiary care centers over a 7-year period. Mean age was 46 years (range, 16 to 76 years), 67% (n = 10) had a psychiatric history, and four were known to abuse illicit substances. Patients with oromandibular involvement required on average a total of 2.8 procedures, and those with midface (3.7) or combined defects (6) required more total procedures (p = 0.21). Donor sites included osteocutaneous radial forearm (n = 8), fibula (n = 4), fasciocutaneous radial forearm (n = 5), and anterior lateral thigh (n = 1). Median length of hospitalization was 8 days. Overall complication rate was 33% (n = 5), and included hematoma (n = 1), fistula (n = 1), and mandibular malunion (n = 2). Most patients were able to tolerate a regular or soft diet (92%), maintain oral competency (58%), and demonstrate intelligible speech (92%) at a median time to follow-up of 12 months. Despite the devastating nature of this injury, free flap reconstruction of self-inflicted submental gunshot wounds results in acceptable functional results for the majority of patients

    Effects of inhaled tier-2 diesel engine exhaust on immunotoxicity in a rat model: A hazard identification study. Part II. Immunotoxicology

    Diesel exhaust (DE) is an air pollutant containing gaseous compounds and particulate matter. Diesel engines are common on gas extraction and oil sites, leading to complex DE exposure to a broad range of compounds through occupational settings. The US EPA concluded that short-term exposure to DE leads to allergic inflammatory disorders of the airways. To further evaluate the immunotoxicity of DE, the effects of whole-body inhalation of 0.2 and 1 mg/m3 DE (total carbon; 6 h/d for 4 days) were investigated 1-, 7-, and 27-days post exposure in Sprague-Dawley rats using an occupationally relevant exposure system. DE exposure of 1 mg/m3 increased total cellularity, number of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells, and B-cells at 1 d post-exposure in the lung lymph nodes. At 7 d post-exposure to 1 mg/m3, cellularity and the number of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells decreased in the LLNs. In the bronchoalveolar lavage, B-cell number and frequency increased at 1 d post-exposure, Natural Killer cell number and frequency decreased at 7 d post-exposure, and at 27 d post-exposure CD8+ T-cell and CD11b+ cell number and frequency decreased with 0.2 mg/m3 exposure. In the spleen, 0.2 mg/m3 increased CD4+ T-cell frequency at 1 and 7 d post-exposure and at 27 d post-exposure increased CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell number and CD8+ T-cell frequency. B-cells were the only immune cell subset altered in the three tissues (spleen, LLNs, and BALF), suggesting the induction of the adaptive immune response. The increase in lymphocytes in several different organ types also suggests an induction of a systemic inflammatory response occurring following DE exposure. These results show that DE exposure induced modifications of cellularity of phenotypic subsets that may impair immune function and contribute to airway inflammation induced by DE exposure in rats
