Transcription of the apicoplast genome
Many members of the Apicomplexa contain a remnant chloroplast, known as an apicoplast. The apicoplast encodes numerous genes, and loss of the organelle is lethal. Here, we present a summary of what is known about apicoplast transcription. Unlike plant chloroplasts, there is a single RNA polymerase, and initial transcription is polycistronic. RNA is then cleaved into tRNA, mRNA and rRNA molecules. Significant levels of antisense transcription have been reported, together with a single case of RNA editing. Polycistronic transcription is also observed in the related algae Chromera and Vitrella, which retain a photosynthetic chloroplast. Surprisingly, a polyU tail is added to Chromera and Vitrella transcripts which encode proteins involved in photosynthesis. No such tail is added to Plasmodium transcripts. Transcription in the Apicomplexa is remarkably similar to that seen in the chloroplast of the related peridinin dinoflagellate algae, reflecting the common evolutionary origins of the organelle
Immunization of mice against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection
Mice were immunized with vaccines containing whole dry bacteria and adjuvant. They were challenged by the intravenous injection of living bacteria. The degree of immunity obtained was best expressed in terms of the difference in the Tangens values of the cumulative death rates between the immunized and control animals.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi.

Quantum lattice fluctuations in a frustrated Heisenberg spin-Peierls chain
As a simple model for spin-Peierls systems we study a frustrated Heisenberg
chain coupled to optical phonons. In view of the anorganic spin-Peierls
compound CuGeO3 we consider two different mechanisms of spin-phonon coupling.
Combining variational concepts in the adiabatic regime and perturbation theory
in the anti-adiabatic regime we derive effective spin Hamiltonians which cover
the dynamical effect of phonons in an approximate way. Ground-state phase
diagrams of these models are determined, and the effect of frustration is
discussed. Comparing the properties of the ground state and of low-lying
excitations with exact diagonalization data for the full quantum spin phonon
models, good agreement is found especially in the anti-adiabatic regime.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Immune response of Merino sheep to inactivated Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis vaccine
The brand of yeast extract used for medium production is critical for the cultivation of large numbers of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. The agglutination test was used to measure the antibody response which followed the inoculation of various inactivated C. pseudotubermlosis vaccines . The best results followed two subcutaneous injections of 5 ml vaccine prepared by inactivation with 0,5% formalin and standardized so that each dose contained a total of 0,025 ml packed cells. The addition of adjuvants to the vaccine had a negligible effect on the antibody response, but increasing the interval between the primary and secondary injections from 2 or 4 to 6 weeks resulted in a higher level of agglutinating antibodies. The antibody titres, however, returned to pre-immunization levels within 3 to 4 months. Freshly prepared vaccine was very toxic, apparently due to incomplete toxoiding of the exotoxin, but older vaccine was shown to be quite safe. A method was devised whereby chronic pulmonary abscesses could be established in experimental animals. Exposure of immunized sheep to artificial infection showed that they were well protected against subacute infection and death but that they were not able to restrict the development of abscesses effectively. The possible reasons for the disappointing results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms of immunity which may be involved.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590;300dpi.

Properties of a Dilute Bose Gas near a Feshbach Resonance
In this paper, properties of a homogeneous Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance
are studied in the dilute region at zero temperature. The stationary state
contains condensations of atoms and molecules. The ratio of the molecule
density to the atom density is . There are two types of excitations,
molecular excitations and atomic excitations. Atomic excitations are gapless,
consistent with the traditional theory of a dilute Bose gas. The molecular
excitation energy is finite in the long wavelength limit as observed in recent
experiments on Rb. In addition, the decay process of the condensate is
studied. The coefficient of the three-body recombination rate is about 140
times larger than that of a Bose gas without a Feshbach resonance, in

Improving adherence to acute low back pain guideline recommendations with chiropractors and physiotherapists: the ALIGN cluster randomised controlled trial
Background
Acute low back pain is a common condition, has high burden, and there are evidence-to-practice gaps in the chiropractic and physiotherapy setting for imaging and giving advice to stay active. The aim of this cluster randomised trial was to estimate the effects of a theory- and evidence-based implementation intervention to increase chiropractors’ and physiotherapists’ adherence to a guideline for acute low back pain compared with the comparator (passive dissemination of the guideline). In particular, the primary aim of the intervention was to reduce inappropriate imaging referral and improve patient low back pain outcomes, and to determine whether this intervention was cost-effective.
Methods
Physiotherapy and chiropractic practices in the state of Victoria, Australia, comprising at least one practising clinician who provided care to patients with acute low back pain, were invited to participate. Patients attending these practices were included if they had acute non-specific low back pain (duration less than 3 months), were 18 years of age or older, and were able to understand and read English. Practices were randomly assigned either to a tailored, multi-faceted intervention based on the guideline (interactive educational symposium plus academic detailing) or passive dissemination of the guideline (comparator). A statistician independent of the study team undertook stratified randomisation using computer-generated random numbers; four strata were defined by professional group and the rural or metropolitan location of the practice. Investigators not involved in intervention delivery were blinded to allocation. Primary outcomes were X-ray referral self-reported by clinicians using a checklist and patient low back pain-specific disability (at 3 months).
Results
A total of 104 practices (43 chiropractors, 85 physiotherapists; 755 patients) were assigned to the intervention and 106 practices (45 chiropractors, 97 physiotherapists; 603 patients) to the comparator; 449 patients were available for the patient-level primary outcome. There was no important difference in the odds of patients being referred for X-ray (adjusted (Adj) OR: 1.40; 95% CI 0.51, 3.87; Adj risk difference (RD): 0.01; 95% CI − 0.02, 0.04) or patient low back pain-specific disability (Adj mean difference: 0.37; 95% CI − 0.48, 1.21, scale 0–24). The intervention did lead to improvement for some key secondary outcomes, including giving advice to stay active (Adj OR: 1.96; 95% CI 1.20, 3.22; Adj RD: 0.10; 95% CI 0.01, 0.19) and intending to adhere to the guideline recommendations (e.g. intention to refer for X-ray: Adj OR: 0.27; 95% CI 0.17, 0.44; intention to give advice to stay active: Adj OR: 2.37; 95% CI 1.51, 3.74).
Conclusions
Intervention group clinicians were more likely to give advice to stay active and to intend to adhere to the guideline recommendations about X-ray referral. The intervention did not change the primary study outcomes, with no important differences in X-ray referral and patient disability between groups, implying that hypothesised reductions in health service utilisation and/or productivity gains are unlikely to offset the direct costs of the intervention. We report these results with the caveat that we enrolled less patients into the trial than our determined sample size. We cannot recommend this intervention as a cost-effective use of resources
Saturation in heteronuclear photoassociation of 6Li7Li
We report heteronuclear photoassociation spectroscopy in a mixture of
magneto-optically trapped 6Li and 7Li. Hyperfine resolved spectra of the
vibrational level v=83 of the singlet state have been taken up to intensities
of 1000 W/cm^2. Saturation of the photoassociation rate has been observed for
two hyperfine transitions, which can be shown to be due to saturation of the
rate coefficient near the unitarity limit. Saturation intensities on the order

Weakly bound atomic trimers in ultracold traps
The experimental three-atom recombination coefficients of the atomic states
Na, Rb and Rb,
together with the corresponding two-body scattering lengths, allow predictions
of the trimer bound state energies for such systems in a trap. The
recombination parameter is given as a function of the weakly bound trimer
energies, which are in the interval for large
positive scattering lengths, . The contribution of a deep-bound state to our
prediction, in the case of Rb, for a particular trap, is

Non-destructive, dynamic detectors for Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose and analyze a series of non-destructive, dynamic detectors for
Bose-Einstein condensates based on photo-detectors operating at the shot noise
limit. These detectors are compatible with real time feedback to the
condensate. The signal to noise ratio of different detection schemes are
compared subject to the constraint of minimal heating due to photon absorption
and spontaneous emission. This constraint leads to different optimal operating
points for interference-based schemes. We find the somewhat counter-intuitive
result that without the presence of a cavity, interferometry causes as much
destruction as absorption for optically thin clouds. For optically thick
clouds, cavity-free interferometry is superior to absorption, but it still
cannot be made arbitrarily non-destructive . We propose a cavity-based
measurement of atomic density which can in principle be made arbitrarily
non-destructive for a given signal to noise ratio
Three-body non-additive forces between spin-polarized alkali atoms
Three-body non-additive forces in systems of three spin-polarized alkali
atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs) are investigated using high-level ab initio
calculations. The non-additive forces are found to be large, especially near
the equilateral equilibrium geometries. For Li, they increase the three-atom
potential well depth by a factor of 4 and reduce the equilibrium interatomic
distance by 0.9 A. The non-additive forces originate principally from chemical
