    Co-creating corporate brand identity with online brand communities: a managerial perspective

    Contemporary branding literature views brand identity as socially constructed through complex interactions between multiple stakeholders. Despite extant work on how brand communities and individuals contribute towards brand identity formation, our understanding of management-led processes constituting part of the wider process of a socially constructed brand identity is still under-developed. Drawing on in-depth interviews with senior executives of a luxury automotive company and a netnography of its online brand community, we develop a process model of corporate brand identity co-creation, comprising three management-led processes: ‘nurturing brand passion’, ‘bridging’ corporate brand identity meanings and ‘partnering’, and associated activities through which management contribute to the wider process of corporate brand identity formation with community members and other stakeholders. By highlighting the interlinked and recursive nature of these processes and activities in the resulting model, the study offers a deeper understanding of the ways in which management are involved in co-creating corporate brand identity

    Exploring Pre-practicum Site-Based Experiential Learning in School Counselor Preparation

    In this study, participation in a pre-practicum site-based experiential learning assignment was examined. First semester pre-service school counselors who were enrolled in an introductory school counseling course, engaged in observation, counseling, and academic support with students and clients at community and school sites. Qualitative data was collected across three cohort groups and examined through phenomenological inquiry. Participants shared common themes, including that they: (a) Recognized inequities while they expanded their worldview; (b) Preferred a structured experience; (c) Valued relationships; and (d) Drew connections to the classroom and the field

    Synthetic hydroxyapatite inhibits bisphosphonate toxicity to the oral mucosa in vitro

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a side effect of bisphosphonate therapy, characterised by exposed necrotic bone. The soft tissues of the oral mucosa no longer provide a protective barrier and MRONJ patients experience pain, infections and difficulties eating. We hypothesised that hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) could reduce bisphosphonate concentrations and protect the oral mucosa by exploiting bisphosphonate’s calcium binding affinity. The effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) and pamidronic acid (PA) on the metabolism of oral fibroblasts, oral keratinocytes and three-dimensional oral mucosa models was investigated and then repeated in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules. Without hydroxyapatite, ZA and PA significantly reduced the metabolic activity of oral cells in a dose-dependent manner. Both drugs reduced epithelial thickness and 30 µM ZA resulted in loss of the epithelium. Hydroxyapatite granules had a protective effect on oral cells, with metabolic activity retained. Oral mucosa models retained their multi-layered epithelium when treated with ZA in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules and metabolic activity was comparable to controls. These results demonstrate hydroxyapatite granules protected oral soft tissues from damage caused by bisphosphonate exposure. Porous hydroxyapatite granules are currently used for socket preservation and this data suggests their potential to prevent MRONJ in at-risk patients

    Plasma spray nozzle with low overspray and collimated flow

    An improved nozzle for reducing overspray in high temperature supersonic plasma spray devices comprises a body defining an internal passageway having an upstream end and a downstream end through which a selected plasma gas is directed. The nozzle passageway has a generally converging/diverging Laval shape with its upstream end converging to a throat section and its downstream end diverging from the throat section. The upstream end of the passageway is configured to accommodate a high current cathode for producing an electrical arc in the passageway to heat and ionize the gas flow to plasma form as it moves along the passageway. The downstream end of the nozzle is uniquely configured through the methodology of this invention to have a contoured bell-shape that diverges from the throat to the exit of the nozzle. Coating material in powder form is injected into the plasma flow in the region of the bell-shaped downstream end of the nozzle and the powder particles become entrained in the flow. The unique bell shape of the nozzle downstream end produces a plasma spray that is ideally expanded at the nozzle exit and thus virtually free of shock phenomena, and that is highly collimated so as to exhibit significantly reduced fanning and diffusion between the nozzle and the target. The overall result is a significant reduction in the amount of material escaping from the plasma stream in the form of overspray and a corresponding improvement in the cost of the coating operation and in the quality and integrity of the coating itself

    Tumors metastasizing to the head and neck region are uncommon. Metastasis of urothelial carcinoma to the maxillofacial region is exceedingly rare and mostly involves the jaw. We present a case of urothelial carcinoma metastasizing to the tongue. Immunohistochemistry in conjunction with fluorescent in situ hybridization was used to confirm the relation between the primary and metastatic lesions, making it the first such reported case employing the UroVysion (Catalogue number 02 J27-025, Abbott Molecular Inc., Des Plaines, IL, USA) fluorescent in situ hybridization probe in a metastatic lesion in the head and neck region

    Environmental and financial implications of ethanol as a bioethylene feedstock versus as a transportation fuel

    Bulk chemicals production from biomass may compete with biofuels for low-cost and sustainable biomass sources. Understanding how alternative uses of biomass compare in terms of financial and environmental parameters is therefore necessary to help ensure that efficient uses of resources are encouraged by policy and undertaken by industry. In this paper, we compare the environmental and financial performance of using ethanol as a feedstock for bioethylene production or as a transport fuel in the US life cycle-based models are developed to isolate the relative impacts of these two ethanol uses and generate results that are applicable irrespective of ethanol production pathway. Ethanol use as a feedstock for bioethylene production or as a transport fuel leads to comparable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fossil energy consumption reductions relative to their counterparts produced from fossil sources. By displacing gasoline use in vehicles, use of ethanol as a transport fuel is six times more effective in reducing petroleum energy use on a life cycle basis. In contrast, bioethylene predominately avoids consumption of natural gas. Considering 2013 US ethanol and ethylene market prices, our analysis shows that bioethylene is financially viable only if significant price premiums are realized over conventional ethylene, from 35% to 65% depending on the scale of bioethylene production considered (80 000 t yr−1 to 240 000 t yr−1). Ethanol use as a transportation fuel is therefore the preferred pathway considering financial,GHGemissions, and petroleum energy use metrics, although bioethylene production could have strategic value if demand-side limitations of ethanol transport fuel markets are reached

    Research Update: Relativistic origin of slow electron-hole recombination in hybrid halide perovskite solar cells

    The hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) exhibits long minority-carrier lifetimes and diffusion lengths. We show that slow recombination originates from a spin-split indirect-gap. Large internal electric fields act on spin-orbit-coupled band extrema, shifting band-edges to inequivalent wavevectors, making the fundamental gap indirect. From a description of photoluminescence within the quasiparticle self-consistent GW approximation for MAPI, CdTe, and GaAs, we predict carrier lifetime as a function of light intensity and temperature. At operating conditions we find radiative recombination in MAPI is reduced by a factor of more than 350 compared to direct gap behavior. The indirect gap is retained with dynamic disorder
