City Know-How
Human health and planetary health are influenced by city lifestyles, city leadership, and city development. For both, worrying trends are leading to increasing concern and it is imperative that human health and environmental impacts become core foci in urban policy. Changing trajectory will require concerted action; the journal Cities & Health is dedicated to supporting the flow of knowledge, in all directions, to help make this happen. We wish to foster communication between researchers, practitioners, policy-makers, communities, and decision-makers in cities. This is the purpose of the City Know-how section of the journal. âResearch for city practiceâ disseminates lessons from research by explaining key messages for city leaders, communities, and the professions involved in city policy and practice. âCity shortsâ provide glimpses of what is being attempted or achieved âon the groundâ and âcase studiesâ are where you will find evaluations of interventions. Last, âCommentary and debateâ extends conversations we are having to develop and mobilize much needed new thinking. Join in these conversations. In order to strengthen the community of interest, we would like to include many and varied voices, including those from younger practitioners and researchers who are supporting health and health equity in everyday urban lives
Strategy implementation: what is the failure rate?
It is often claimed that 50â90% of strategic initiatives fail. Although these claims have had a signiïŹcant impact on management theory and practice, they are controversial. We aim to clarify why this is the case. Towards this end, an extensive review of the literature is presented, assessed, compared and discussed. We conclude that while it is widely acknowledged that the implementation of a new strategy can be a difïŹcult task, the true rate of implementation failure remains to be determined.
Most of the estimates presented in the literature are based on evidence that is outdated, fragmentary, fragile or just absent. Careful consideration is advised before using current estimates to justify changes in the theory and practice. A set of guiding principles is presented for assisting researchers to produce better estimates of the rates of failure

Rethinking place-making: aligning placeness factors with perceived urban design qualities (PUDQs) to improve the built environment in historical district
Understanding the concept of place is critically important for urban design and place-making practice, and this research attempted to investigate the pathways by which perceived urban design qualities (PUDQs) influence placeness factors in the Chinese context. Twelve hypotheses were developed and combined in a structural equation model for validation. The Tanhualin historical district in Wuhan, China was selected for the analysis. As a result, place attachment was verified as a critical bridge factor that mediated the influence of PUDQs on place satisfaction. Among the five selected PUDQs, walkability and space quality were revealed as the most influential factors associated with place attachment and place satisfaction. Accessibility was actually indirectly beneficial to place-making via the mediation of walkability. Corresponding implications and strategies were discussed to maintain the sense of place for historic districts
Calculation of the vibrational spectra of H <inf>5</inf>O <inf>2</inf>+ and its deuterium-substituted isotopologues by molecular dynamics simulations
In this work, we present infrared spectra of H 5O 2+ and its D 5O 2+, D 4HO 2+, and DH 4O 2+ isotopologues calculated by classical molecular dynamics simulations on an accurate potential energy surface generated from CCSD(T) calculations, as well as on the BLYP DFT potential energy surface sampled by means of the Car-Parrinello algorithm. The calculated spectra obtained with internal energies corresponding to a temperature of about 30 K are in overall good agreement with those from experimental measurements and from quantum dynamical simulations. © 2009 American Chemical Society
