Middle Ordovician To Silurian (wenlock) Conodont Taxonomy And Biostratigraphy From Basinal Strata Of The Road River Formation In The Richardson Mountains, Northern Yukon Territory

    Get PDF
Conodonts from fine clastics of the Road River Formation in the Richardson Mountains range from Middle Ordovician to Early Silurian. Additional Late Ordovician conodonts are from the more nearshore carbonate Whittaker Formation in the southern Mackenzie Mountains, N.W.T. Conodont faunas from the Road River Formation are largely represented by offshore and European Province taxa; faunas from the Whitaker Formation are dominated by Panderodus and American Province taxa. New or revised taxa include: Late Ordovician N. gen. A n. sp. A (differs from known rastrate taxa); Llandovery N. gen. B (may be related to Oulodus); and Astropentagnathus, which may have additional elements that comprise a symmetry series. Elements currently assigned to Carniodus may be part of Pterospathodus species; these are similar to elements of the older Llandovery P. posteritenuis. P. posteritenuis and the Ordovician G. ensifer may represent an evolutionary lineage.;Eleven Yukon conodont assemblages include: early Llanvirn C. horridus - S. spinatus assemblage; P. serrus Zone (upper P. tentaculatus Zone, late Llanvirn); late Fauna 12 (Late Ordovician, P. pacificus Zone). Low abundance of Gamachignathus ensifer suggests the late Richmondian G. ensifer Biohorizon rather than Fauna 13 (Gamachian). The O. n. sp. A - I. sp. B assemblage lies between the P. pacificus and G. persculptus? zones. The O. fluegeli - D. obliquicostatus assemblage corresponds to the mid-M. turriculatus and the P. celloni zones, and probably represents an offshore fauna. Higher strata contain Aulacognathus bullatus, Astropentagnathus irregularis and Pterospathodus pennatus angulatus. The P. amorphognathoides Zone?, with Carniodus carnulus, Distomodus staurognathoides and P. p. procerus, occurs below the latest Llandovery C. sakmaricus - C. laqueus Zone; P. amorphognathoides is absent. The K. walliseri Biohorizon (Wenlock) is tentatively recognized.;Rare conodont-bearing carbonates, in contrast to common graptolitic shale demand that the systemic boundary in Yukon clastic facies be defined using graptolites

The 'Rock ‘n’ Fossil Road Show:' An Enduring Earth Science Educational Outreach Initiative in Calgary, Alberta

Since 2004, the Calgary office of the Geological Survey of Canada has been holding ‘Rock ‘n’ Fossil Road Shows’ at Calgary Public Library branches, in partnership with the Alberta Science Network and the Alberta Palaeontological Society. These now-annual earth science education outreach events have given more than 3700 people of all ages the opportunity to view, examine, and learn about GSC-Calgary’s collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils (including many museum quality pieces), have their own samples and collections identified by experts, and gain a better understanding of local and regional geology. This article describes what goes into organizing these events, reviews their evolution, and discusses reasons for their enduring success.

    a tumblr book

"This book takes an extensive look at the many different types of users and cultures that comprise the popular social media platform Tumblr. Though it does not receive nearly as much attention as other social media such as Twitter or Facebook, Tumblr and its users have been hugely influential in creating and shifting popular culture, especially progressive youth culture, with the New York Times referring to 2014 as the dawning of the “age of Tumblr activism.”   Perfect for those unfamiliar with the platform as well as those who grew up on it, this volume contains essays and artwork that span many different topics: fandom; platform structure and design; race, gender and sexuality, including queer and trans identities; aesthetics; disability and mental health; and social media privacy and ethics. An entire generation of young people that is now beginning to influence mass culture and politics came of age on Tumblr, and this volume is an indispensable guide to the many ways this platform works.

Direct Measurements of Interplanetary Dust Particles in the Vicinity of Earth

    Get PDF
The direct measurements made by the Explorer VIII satellite provide the first sound basis for analyzing all available direct measurements of the distribution of interplanetary dust particles. The model average distribution curve established by such an analysis departs significantly from that predicted by the (uncertain) extrapolation of results from meteor observations. A consequence of this difference is that the daily accretion of interplanetary particulate matter by the earth is now considered to be mainly dust particles of the direct measurements range of particle size. Almost all the available direct measurements obtained with microphone systems on rockets, satellites, and spacecraft fit directly on the distribution curve defined by Explorer VIII data. The lack of reliable datum points departing significantly from the model average distribution curve means that available direct measurements show no discernible evidence of an appreciable geocentric concentration of interplanetary dust particles

Compression of 1030-nm femtosecond pulses after nonlinear spectral broadening in Corning® HI 1060 fiber:Theory and experiment

    Get PDF
We present the design and implementation of femtosecond pulse compression at 1030 nm based on spectral broadening in single-mode fiber, followed by dispersion compensation using an optimized double-pass SF11 prism pair. The source laser produced 1030-nm 144-fs pulses which were coupled into Corning® HI 1060 fiber, whose length was chosen to be 40 cm by using a pulse propagation model based on solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. A maximum broadening to 60-nm bandwidth was obtained, following which compression to 60 ± 3 fs duration was achieved by using a prism-pair separation of 1025 ± 5 mm
