    Relations between extensional tectonics and magmatism within the Southern Oklahoma aulacogen

    Variations in the geometry, distribution and thickness of Cambrian igneous and sedimentary units within southwest Oklahoma are related to a late Proterozoic - early Paleozoic rifting event which formed the Southern Oklahoma aulacogen. These rock units are exposed in the Wichita Mountains, southwest Olkahoma, located on the northern margin of a Proterozoic basin, identified in the subsurface by COCORP reflection data. Overprinting of the Cambrian extensional event by Pennyslvanian tectonism obsured the influence of pre-existing basement structures and contrasting basement lithologies upon the initial development of the aulacogen

    We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to seek the integrated radio flux from all the pulsars in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We have detected an extended region of radio emission and have calibrated its flux against the flux distribution of the known pulsars in the cluster. We find the total 20-cm radio flux from the cluster's pulsars to be S = 2.0 +/- 0.3 mJy. This implies the lower limit to the radio luminosity distribution to be L_1400 = 0.4 mJy kpc^2 and the size of the observable pulsar population to be N < 30.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS in pres

    The Trade-off between Private Lots and Public Open Space in Subdivisions at the Urban-Rural Fringe

    In many communities on the urban–rural fringe, subdivisions are subject to “clustering” rules, in which houses must be located on a portion of the total land area and the remainder of the land is left as open space. This open space may be undisturbed forest or pastureland, or it may include recreation facilities and trails. In some communities, the open space may remain in agricultural use as pasture or cropland. Although the open space may provide benefits to subdivision residents, it means that those residents are living in a higher-density setting than people living in conventional subdivisions. It is unclear whether the benefits offset the loss experienced by smaller lots and higher density. This trade-off is the focus of our study. We use data on subdivision house sales occurring between 1981 and 2001 in a county on the fringe of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area to estimate a hedonic price model. We examine how households value being adjacent to open space and having more open space in the subdivision, and how they may be willing to trade off those amenities with their own private lot space. We find that private acreage matters to households—a 10 percent larger lot leads to about a 0.6 percent higher house price, all else being equal. Subdivision open space is also valuable to households, but the marginal effect is much smaller than the marginal effect of private lot space. We also find that subdivision open space does substitute for private land, but the extent of the trade-off is small. We use the results of the estimated hedonic model to simulate the effects on prices of jointly increasing open space and reducing average lot size, holding the size of the subdivision constant.     Entanglement between an electron and a nuclear spin 1/2

    We report on the preparation and detection of entangled states between an electron spin 1/2 and a nuclear spin 1/2 in a molecular single crystal. These were created by applying pulses at ESR (9.5 GHz) and NMR (28 MHz) frequencies.     The Vela Pulsar's Radio Nebula

    We have discovered that the radio nebula surrounding the Vela pulsar covers a much wider extent than previously reported, with two lobes to the North and South of the pulsar. Indications of this object have been reported previously, but its symmetric morphology around the pulsar and other details had not been identified as they were hidden due to poor sensitivity to low spatial frequencies. The structure is highly polarised and the polarisation vectors, once corrected for Faraday rotation, reveal symmetry with respect to the spin axis of the pulsar. The X-ray emission found by Chandra lies at the centre of this structure, in a region which has no detectable excess of radio emission. We estimate total fluxes and regional fluxes from the Northern and Southern lobes, plus the X-ray region at four radio frequencies; 1.4, 2.4, 5 and 8.5 GHz.     Stability analysis of polarized domains

    Polarized ferrofluids, lipid monolayers and magnetic bubbles form domains with deformable boundaries. Stability analysis of these domains depends on a family of nontrivial integrals. We present a closed form evaluation of these integrals as a combination of Legendre functions. This result allows exact and explicit formulae for stability thresholds and growth rates of individual modes.     Linear Time LexDFS on Cocomparability Graphs

    Lexicographic depth first search (LexDFS) is a graph search protocol which has already proved to be a powerful tool on cocomparability graphs. Cocomparability graphs have been well studied by investigating their complements (comparability graphs) and their corresponding posets. Recently however LexDFS has led to a number of elegant polynomial and near linear time algorithms on cocomparability graphs when used as a preprocessing step [2, 3, 11]. The nonlinear runtime of some of these results is a consequence of complexity of this preprocessing step. We present the first linear time algorithm to compute a LexDFS cocomparability ordering, therefore answering a problem raised in [2] and helping achieve the first linear time algorithms for the minimum path cover problem, and thus the Hamilton path problem, the maximum independent set problem and the minimum clique cover for this graph family

    Joint Astrophysics Nascent Universe Satellite:. utilizing GRBs as high redshift probes

    The Joint Astrophysics Nascent Universe Satellite (JANUS) is a multiwavelength cosmology mission designed to address fundamental questions about the cosmic dawn. It has three primary science objectives: (1) measure the massive star formation rate over 5 ≤ z ≤ 12 by discovering and observing high-z gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows, (2) enable detailed studies of the history of reionization and metal enrichment in the early Universe, and (3) map the growth of the first supermassive black holes by discovering and observing the brightest quasars at z ≥ 6. A rapidly slewing spacecraft and three science instruments – the X-ray Coded Aperture Telescope (XCAT), the Near InfraRed Telescope (NIRT), and the GAmma-ray Transient Experiment for Students (GATES) – make-up the JANUS observatory and are responsible for realizing the three primary science objectives. The XCAT (0.5–20 keV) is a wide field of view instrument responsible for detecting and localizing ∼60 z ≥ 5 GRBs, including ∼8 z ≥ 8 GRBs, during a 2-year mission. The NIRT (0.7–1.7 µm) refines the GRB positions and provides rapid (≤ 30 min) redshift information to the astronomical community. Concurrently, the NIRT performs a 20, 000 deg2 survey of the extragalactic sky discovering and localizing ∼300 z ≥ 6 quasars, including ∼50 at z ≥ 7, over a two-year period. The GATES provides high-energy (15 keV −1.0 MeV) spectroscopy as well as 60–500 keV polarimetry of bright GRBs. Here we outline the JANUS instrumentation and the mission science motivations
